Texas coach: Should we have played Buckeyes?
Taking on No. 1 team was good for sport, but not for Longhorns

Updated: 3:55 p.m. ET Sept 21, 2006
AUSTIN - Texas coach Mack Brown has talked about how great it was for college football that his Longhorns played No. 1 Ohio State so early in the season.

Looking back, he also knows just where his team would be if the Buckeyes never came to Austin: If Texas had played another pushover instead, the Longhorns would still be ranked No. 2 with a better shot at repeating as national champs.

“If we didn’t play anybody and won, we’d be No. 2,” Brown said this week as his team prepares for Iowa State in Saturday’s Big 12 opener.

Of course, had Texas beat Ohio State, they’d be No. 1. A 24-7 loss prevented that.

The Bowl Championship Series is set up to reward undefeated teams who might not play the best competition, Brown said.

Playing Ohio State was fun for the players and fans but came with a heavy price for the loser, just like it did the previous year when Texas beat the Buckeyes and went on to win the national title.

“I think it’s good for college football, but I don’t know if it’s good for that school and that team,” Brown said. “It’s easier to play a soft schedule and be No. 2.”

Texas dropped to No. 8 after the loss, then moved up to No. 7 this week after blasting Rice 52-7 while two teams ranked ahead of the Longhorns lost: Notre Dame and LSU.

Actually, he said the exact same thing last year. Both Ohio State and Texas tried to get out of the home and home but were unsucessful.

It was great for the sport, but not the loser...and Mack said that before beating tOSU last year. Mack is all for a playoff system in college football that would allow for great match ups like Texas and Ohio state without the overall season ending risk.

I don't know about that. Never heard that at all...Especially from OSU...link would be good.

Playoffs are the ONLY way to go if you want top teams to play each other each year.

Never heard Tressel *****ing about it.:D

I don't have a link for you now (if you must have one, I can try), but in the weeks prior to last year's meeting, Mack was very vocal about the dangers of that sort of game when teams like Ohio State and Texas can easily get to the MNC game without the big non-conference game once the strength of schedule was basically eliminated.

He mentioned, as well as an article, that in the few years prior to the game, both programs attempted to drop the series for that very reason (no particulars were given as to why they could not have the series dropped).

In the end, it helped both. It helped Texas jump into a MNC season and it should do the same for Ohio State this year.

As a Texas fan, I loved the series. Them winning at the shoe was right up there with beating USC in the Rose Bowl. Although Texas was too inexperienced at QB this year, it was still a fun week and gameday setting in Austin when you guys rolled into town.

Now horn fans have to deal with Sam Houston State, UTEP, and other cupcakes in the future...it does not help to learn that we recently turned down Auburn for a home and home...people here in Houston could not understand why Texas came to town this year and only sold 40,000 tickets for the Rice game at Reliant. They were going on and on about how no VY meant no ticket sales, which is bull.

They were playing RICE. I would have gone to the game, but why drop $80 on a ticket when your team could just insert the walk ons and win the game? I chose to stay home and flip between some great college football games.

Doesn't really matter as far as the link...I trust you...I'm sure you're right.

I just would REALLY love a playoff...Because this year just like last...one loss against a good team should not cost you when a lot of teams are playing easy teams.

Every team does it because they want to avoid what Texas and Ohio St did the last two years. They had the Balls to play each other and it cost them...But I wouldn't change a thing.

Kinda like the Canes Vs Noles every year now. Whoever loses is pretty much doomed.

Doesn't matter too much this year, both teams aren't any good. :)

yeah, I would kill for somesort of playoff...at least among the BCS bowls.

Even though Texas beat USC last year, I would not have minded them matching up with Penn State or Notre Dame in the process...I am sure tOSU fans would have loved another shot at Texas last year.
