Texas coach: Should we have played Buckeyes?
Taking on No. 1 team was good for sport, but not for Longhorns

AUSTIN - Texas coach Mack Brown has talked about how great it was for college football that his Longhorns played No. 1 Ohio State so early in the season.
Looking back, he also knows just where his team would be if the Buckeyes never came to Austin: If Texas had played another pushover instead, the Longhorns would still be ranked No. 2 with a better shot at repeating as national champs.
“If we didn’t play anybody and won, we’d be No. 2,” Brown said this week as his team prepares for Iowa State in Saturday’s Big 12 opener.
Of course, had Texas beat Ohio State, they’d be No. 1. A 24-7 loss prevented that.
The Bowl Championship Series is set up to reward undefeated teams who might not play the best competition, Brown said.
Playing Ohio State was fun for the players and fans but came with a heavy price for the loser, just like it did the previous year when Texas beat the Buckeyes and went on to win the national title.
“I think it’s good for college football, but I don’t know if it’s good for that school and that team,” Brown said. “It’s easier to play a soft schedule and be No. 2.”
Texas dropped to No. 8 after the loss, then moved up to No. 7 this week after blasting Rice 52-7 while two teams ranked ahead of the Longhorns lost: Notre Dame and LSU.
