LOL
Jameis Winston desperately wanted to play for Texas and they totally snubbed him.

Good grief. What is wrong with the Longhorns?!

They could have had some of the very best QBs lately.
I'm not sure who the main QB scout is for them, but the guy passed on RG3, Andrew Luck, and others that are light years better than what they had at the time and currently have.

Now this kid too.

I think he weighs what his scouts, OC, and QB coach tell him.
In the end, he has the final say, but goes and gets (closes the deal on) who they tell him to get.

I think he's more involved that what he likes to let on.

one game...

David Ash and Case McCoy have played more than one game and have shown far less than what Winston did on Monday.

I think he's more involved that what he likes to let on.

Probably, but lots of analyst said that Greg Davis, the form O.C. was the main reason Texas ignored Andrew Luck and instead waited a year to get Garrett Gilbert.

I heard that too.
I think Davis was the amin decision-maker regarding QBs, though brown could of course overrule him.

No matter who we blame, the bottom line is Texas has been making some Texas size mistakes in recruiting. And its not like oh they didn't try to court these guys, its these guys wanted to play for texas, (and in some cases BEGGING to play for texas) and we didn't even give them time of day. thats just exemplifies why Texas is at the bottom of the rankings fighting for a decent bowl. Vs competing for a BCS bowl every year.

True.

As for how UT has performed; well, in the last 3 years they have been down. But before that they had one of the best stretches in the country (maybe 10-12 years?) of winning and competing for BCS bowls.

I guess we'll see if they turn it around.
Certainly those 3 down years would have been way better if they recruited QBs better in that stretch.

The last three years is what i'm referring to. I feel like its been mor Mack trying to get guys in there that he's selects vs getting guys in here that actually win games. Or it could be some other factor, whatever it is, they haven't had a decent recuirting class in awhile

I found out what happened (or didn't happen) with Texas and Winston.

Although Winston (an Alabama native) was verbally committed to Florida State, Mack Brown says the player did contact then OC Bryan Harsin to express interest.
Brown says that he contacted someone that he "really, really trusted" with knowledge of the situation and asked should Texas bring Winston in.
The insider said "Absolutely not. It's a two horse race" between FSU and Alabama.

Brown told Jim Rome of CBS Sports "Great player. Loved to have had him...But we got in it too late".

Better than what they've done :p...Maybe im just biased cause they've been underperforming and pissing me off (ala Cowboys)

I don't think the Texas recruiting classes have been bad the past few seasons. I think the coaching, especially on the defensive side, has been horrible. They haven't been top 5 but then again, that's really not the problem. The players have been there to make plays. They just haven't tackled at all. The worst I've ever seen from a Texas team in fact. That's not recruiting. That's something else IMO.

Classic Monday morning quarterbacking. The RG3 and Luck "misses" were because of Garrett Gilbert, who was the #5 ranked QB nationally in his class. They were both a year before, but UT secures commitments a year early, and had Colt in the fold for two more years, and a top prospect coming in. They didn't NEED RG3 or Luck. And heck, in the BCS game - when Colt went down -- Garrett stepped in as a true freshman and looked dang good for a frosh. The future looked bright for UT. He just flamed out in epic proportions the next year.

RG3 was the 12th ranked 4 star guy - with offers from schools like Tulsa and Houston. So, it's not like D1 powerhouses were knocking down his door. He blew up at Baylor, but it wasn't obvious that he was going to.

Jameis Winston has had one good game. One. Heck, he's only had one game. Let's pump the brakes on him. He was the #2 QB recruit, but Texas already had a commit from Tyrone Swoopes - the #6 QB recruit in 2013. Winston could be amazing, or he could totally flame out.

So, don't blame them for missing on guys, because they get REALLY good guys. If you want to knock them, knock them for not maximizing the talent they bring in. The talent is there, but they do less with more than just about any team I've been a fan of.

(Meanwhile, David Ash passed for 330 yards and 4 TDs, and ran for 91 and 1.)

This is a very fair post IMO, but I fear it will fall on deaf ears. This has all been discussed and pointed out in the past but none of that matters if people don't really want to hear it.

Good post

Ash has played for 2 seasons already, so I hope he is finally becoming good. Don't forget he also threw 2 Ints.

There is nothing wrong with bringing in multiple good options in case one of the guys flames out. When Gilbert flamed out Texas was left with Ash and Case McCoy. Wouldn't it have been better had they at least tried to bring in a Luck or RGIII or whomever else? They didn't even make offers to those guys.

You can't sign every top QB prospect, but Texas definitely could have at least gone after a few more the last several seasons. That is their failure more than the one they did pick, Gilbert just not working out. That kind of thing happens, but they did a poor job of hedging their bets.
