Mississippi State coach Dan Mullen said he's never had a coaching staff ask him about a player as much as the Dallas Cowboys coaching staff asked him about Dak Prescott.

I guess that part was "luck" too.

yes, that after all questions they asked, all the visits, all the looking into him. lucky that he was still there with their second fourth round pick. it's not a knock on their diligence, it's an observation of the fortune it took for him to still be available and their other attempts at landing a qb before him falling through.

Not that I'm calling Cook a never-will-be after 1 NFL start, but Dak has been lighting it up since his 1st preseason game.

Cook was awful in preseason (55% comp pct, 0 TD, 3 INT) and awful last night as well.

Cook will get better. That was a terrible situation to get your first start

That being said, his completion % was terrible in college and will be in the NFL as well. So his ceiling is decidedly lower than Dak's. Also, the leadership questions as well...

come to think of it, how did they ever rate Cook over Dak?!

This thread is proof that Dak has spoiled a lot of Cowboy fans already. Conner Cook is what a rookie looks like they are forced into playing significant time in the NFL.

Dak isn't, but he is a freak of nature. Conner Cook is exactly what a rookie QB looks like when facing a good NFL defense.
Agreed - especially in the playoffs which is a whole other level.

The whole discussion is silly.

Dak was the backup QB most of the summer and the starter basically all of preseason, and coaches had almost two months to determine how to run the offense through him.

Cook never took a snap with the forest team until last week. Throughout the entire regular season, he never took a snap, not even with the scout team. In one week he was thrust into first the backup and then starter's roll, and his OL couldn't handle Houston at all.

Cook showed what he can do in the one series Houston didn't blitz. Way too early to conform that Cook won't be successful or that Dak has a franchise career in front of him. From what I've seen of fans, Dak only needs one rookie performance in the playoffs for fans to turn on him.

I'm also sick of Jerry and the front office being accused of stupidity and blind luck regarding drafting Dak Prescott.

No one, including the Cowboys had any clue Dak would adapt and perform as he has. If anyone had an inkling, Dak would have been a first round pick. So yes, there was some good fortune there, just as there was good fortune for Seattle and NE who waited until rounds 3 and 6 to select Wilson and Brady. However, Dallas, like Seattle and NE, were smarter than any other front office in the NFL in that they valued their guy and selected him while the rest of the NFL was sitting back, smiling smugly.

But then he drafted Dak. dont really need to beat ourselves up over a draft pick we didn't make.

Yea but that's no fun.

Look, when we get bored with criticizing our team for the dumb things that they ACTUALLY HAVE done, it only makes sense to spend some time criticizing them for the dumb things they MIGHT have done.

If the Cowboys lose next Sunday, then Cook and Prescott will have same playoff record. No need to diss Cook after his first NFL start, in a playoff game no less!

He also "wanted" Johnny Football too. Not sure I get your point.

But it isn't like guys will overrule him on a 4th round pick.

We had Cook out for a predraft visit. We often take guys who visited. I expect QB is one of the positions where those visits are most important.

Cook represented good value at the top of the 4th so if he was there, I expect he would have been the pick.

I was thrilled when the Raiders grabbed him. I liked Dak - admittedly, I thought he'd end up a nice back up - but I did want him over Cook. The whole not being a captain thing with Cook was bothersome. With Cook off the board, I thought we'd grab Dak with the next pick. When we didn't, I figured he'd be gone and we'd pickup Hogan.

thats true, but just looking at his poise , and if he gets rattled, he isnt as good as dak.
Had Conner started game one, I dont think he would win 11 in a row.

Not saying he is bad, just more of a regular rookie qb.

I think we owe thanks to the eagles, rams, raiders, and denver, they all pushed cowboys to pick dak.

I thought connor might outplay oswieler, but with the dropped passes, and not running enough, and not a good game plan
for him, it wasnt much of a contest

How much poise do you expect from a rookie QB making their first NFL start on the road in a playoff game with the Raiders top player on the OL out? Any rookie QB is going to be rattled in that situation. I'm not saying Cook will be as good as Dak, he won't be given that opportunity playing behind Carr but he doesn't have the talent around him that Dak has. Murray is a good back but he's not Zeke and the Raiders OL isn't as good as the Cowboys OL especially with Penn out. Cook wasn't getting much help with several drops by his receivers. Anyone who would make judgements about Cook based off that game is being silly especially when he was going up against the #1 defense in the league.

The playoffs are different animal than the regular season and playoff pressure has gotten the better of many a QB. No rookie QB making their first NFL start in a playoff game is going to have much if any success. Cook wasn't near ready to play but the Raiders had no choice. One other point Cook only had 31 passing attempts in preseason compared to 50 attempts for Dak who got much more preseason playing time with Moore and Romo going down. Dak was much more prepared to play this season than Cook with all the reps he got this summer.

It would be great if Dak beats Brady head to head on Feb. 5. I know it's a TEAM sport, but that would feel so sweet. Not a prediction, just a hypothetical.

It's a team sport but they do compare QBs head to head in the NFL and Dak outgunned two QBs this season that have 3 SB wins between them in Rodgers and Roethlisberger.
