The “playbook being outdated” is lazy

Ive seen everyone on here and radio/internet guys keep saying the playbook is outdated.

Nate Newton, who knows more than anyone of us on here said we run 95% of the same plays post snap as the Rams.

The difference and what we’d like to see changed is the presnap misdirection that causes defenses to hesitate which opens up holes in the run game and pass game.

I’ve said forever that most NFL teams are running about the same playbook since there no true west coast or only air Coryell schemes anymore.

What separates is the timing of the calls. The perfect example is the play vs the Eagles Cooper wanted changed. We didn’t put in a new play in the huddle, we just audibled to one that already existed.

Whoever the new playcaller is, they need to have the openness to change and add some presnap motion.

But they don’t have to throw out the entire playbook.
It’s up to the QB to make a difference pre snap by knowing exactly what he is looking at. It’s as simple as that. QBs like Brady manning and all the other elites win the play before the snap

The playbook has all the routes in it.
Combining those routes to create space is missing imo.
MisDirection should have been added to every damn play in some way shape or form last off season.
There is no reason that I can see that we should ever have 11 static players at the snap.
Creating confusion and open space is what today's high powered offenses seem to be about.
I cant see it being too difficult to adapt our book...

Another issue is adapting the game plan to attack the opposing defense weaknesses. How many times did Aikman point out how the opposing CB is limited and we are not feeding Cooper? Adapting the game plan and in game adjustments are key.

I think you are spot on. I can not count the number of times that the Cowboys get set on a game plan and beat themselves unconscious with it, even if it isn't working. No adjustments, no tweaks, just the same old thing, no mater if it is working or not. And all the while, the opposing teams make adjustments to counter what the Cowboys are trying to do.

Are the Cowboys the only team in the NFL that is incapable of such "out of the box" thinking?

This is nonsense. No one in the league runs as many stop routes as the Cowboys. No one is even close. We don't have nearly the variety of formations of route combinations as other teams.

The playbook is fine it’s the playcalling. Very few variety and not taking advantage of playaction is the real problem.

Most run the same plays. It’s called something different. Listen to Dez, he said Linehan had them lining up in the same place for years. That’s lazy. We had a game that we used some misdirection and it worked a lot of times. Then the next game it disappears!

Change the route tree out of the same formation.

Change the formation.

Move players around presnap. Use misdirection.

Make up a new play or 2.

When you have a player like Cooper who can run the tree well then move him around. He quickly had a problem with Linehan calling stop routes on every pass play. It took him and Dak changing at the line and looky what happens.

Our recievers had to run perfect routes to get open. They weren’t being lazy, the opposing defense knew where the break was and where they would be. Makes it a lot easier for defenses. The throw has to be almost perfect. Makes it hard for a young QB.

Anybody play Madden?

You have a few money plays you use and expand or contract your options based on success.

What Linehan does is similar, but he should be completely comfortable calling any play in the book. He does not do this.
