A) Do Not Hand Philadelphia Easy Points Due To A Short Field
The Eagles scored 17 points off drives which began the Panthers’ side of the field due to interceptions. They added 13 points off the Giants and seven points off the Buccaneers due to drives also initiated by interceptions snatched on their opponent’s side of the 50-yard line.
Short punts which never reached Philadelphia territory netted 14 points (seven each) against the Chiefs and Commanders. Washington added another three points due to a muffed punt. The Commanders and Giants tacked on six additional points (a field goal apiece) by fumbling away the ball inside their 40-yard lines.
B) Make Philadelphia Work While Driving The Field
1-play touchdown drives against the Chiefs and Giants, two 2-play touchdown drives against the Buccaneers, a 3-play touchdown drive against the Giants and 4-play touchdown drives (one each against the Commanders and Giants) are ways for a defense to give up huge chunks of points far too easily.
C) Prevent Long Philadelphia Drives From Crossing Our 35/40-Yard Line
Make the Eagles punt instead of surrendering chip shots to David Akers, who has a below 50% career field goal average kicking beyond 50 yards. He’s topped off long Eagles drives with twelve points kicking within their opponents’ 27-yard line (two field goals versus the Chiefs and one each against the Buccaneers and Giants).
D) Do Not Play Santa Claus With Philadelphia’s Defense Or Special Teams
Carolina fumbled at their 2-yard line. Touchdown. They allowed DeSean Jackson to return a punt 85 yards. Touchdown. Tampa Bay found their backs against the wall a.k.a. trying to run out of their end zone. Safety. Washington watched an Eagles defender grab an interception at their 9-yard line. Touchdown.
Philadelphia has averaged a 20-point margin of victory during their five wins. Reducing or wiping out any or all of the above takes any advantage they may have now over Dallas out of their hands and places it solidly within ours.
