I'm going to do these one at a time to try and get an indepth look at each team. No problem discussing others though.

I'm not doing these in any particular order as I see all of them as potentially winning the East although I think the Giants, then Eagle then Skins will be the likely order. Having said that it's almost certainly to be wrong as each year there are one or more surprises in a division. By rule 2/3s of teams do not make the playoffs. Somewhere between 50 and 60% of teams fail to return to the playoffs the next year.

Last year the Giants and Cowboys represented the East in the playoffs with the Cowboys the #1 seed and the Giants the 5th seed. While we only lost 3 games and the Giants 5 they had the better Division record at 4-2 and we at 3-3. Granted we didn't take the Philly game as seriously as we could have but dems the facts. I consider this an important fact.

I think the Giants will again be our principal antagonist and I will not be surprised to see them switch positions with us next year. They are an infernal thorn in our sides and a difficult matchup for us.

NY Giants

Here are the transactions of the Giants this offseason. I have not checked it to see if these are complete so feel free to add to it.

I put up a couple of rosters to try and get a fairly complete one. Again it's difficult to get them complete because they change quickly. Feel free to add and subtract as I can't get them all right in the time I have.

JPP has been signed to a 4 year contract since being tagged.

So let's begin.

http://i471.***BLOCKED***/albums/rr75/jobberone/Screen%20Shot%202017-03-28%20at%201.46.40%20PM_zpsgunm4p7h.png

As you can see their projected wins was 7-9 and without that defense they would have been lucky to win 8 IMO. We gave up 302 points which I consider good but less than 18 PPG is really really good. So it's clear they have to pick up the offense if they're going to make noise this year.

Fluker, Marshall, Jerry and JPP are to date their best FA signings/resignings IMO although they did resign two of their LBers from last year which I consider important. I just don't know how good they are individually. Obviously the entire defense played very well last year so......

RB: The Giants have Perkins and that's about it really. Someone will surprise on that roster with Jennings gone. Not much left in FA so they will look to the draft IMO.

QB: Eli is 36 years old but I expect about the same from him this year. He will do better if they improve their OL enough but he's what he is. Inconsistent is the word here but TBF he's not always had enough time to throw. Last year they were better because he got the ball out more quickly. I look for OL improvement and more time to throw to two WRs whose talent I love.......Marshall a big body and Beckham who I consider unique. IMO they don't have a capable backup but that is the position of many teams.

WR: Marshall is exceptional especially for a big body and Beckham is unique. Those two will be nightmares for all DCs this year. Some are already calling them the two best WR duo in football. Well..........maybe. We'll see. I really like Sterling Shepard and they have some possibilities in Powe, King, Lewis and Edwards. Some of these will be cut and they will likely add a guy in the draft. Almost certainly.

OL: This is a problematic area for the Giants but one they are shoring up. Only 4 Giants went to the Pro Bowl last year (Odell Beckham Jr., Janoris Jenkins, Dwayne Harris, and Landon Collins). Obviously none on the lines. Last year the left side and center had two first-round and one second-round draft picks plus a new offensive line coach in Mike Solari. They finished in the bottom half of the league stat wise. Both tackles gave up approximately 50 pressures but the interior played reasonably well. They have good depth at C. They could be in trouble at T although Solari might coach them up. I'll be very surprised if they don't add a T to the mix although Solari may have other ideas. Flowers started off very well last year and it is possible he was injured early on as a reason for his big fall off in performance. Fluker is the wild card at tackle at the moment.

TE: The Giants got fair at best production from their TEs who most couldn't name IMO. They produced 82 receptions, 631 receiving yards, and three touchdowns. More than a little but less than a whole lot for sure. Some are saying TE is their biggest need but on offense it is clearly OT unless Solari sees something most don't. But they need to acquire a receiving TE for sure IMO.

DL: I like Hankins in the middle but his agent is Kevin Poston so it is not surprising he's still on the FA market. He often makes unreasonable demands. JPP is still a player at 70-80% of his old self although he may say he's back. Vernon is another player so they are good at DE. I don't know the backups well so I'd love to hear from others. Harrison is a huge guy. Vernon had 8.5 sacks last year and JPP had 7 with 3 FF.

LB: As I mentioned they resigned two LBers from last year in Herzlich who is really a backup and STs player good in run coverage but not great in coverage. The other is Robinson who is an above average LBer decent in coverage and versatile. But then how many LBers are good in coverage really. They are really a bunch of no names who over performed in 2016 and I expect LBer to be on the radar R1-3. They need a cover backer who can blitz. So they need some speed.

DB: This is a strong point for the defense to fit along side that DL. Maybe LBer isn't as important as some (me) think. DRC, Collins, and Apple are solid at least. I really don't know their other guys well. Some help here appreciated.

LS: They resigned DeOssie who is very solid.

P: Wing was obtained in a trade 2015 and is fine.

PK: Rosas is listed but that is a mess I think.

Summary:

IF the defense gives us less than 21 PPG and the offense improves to 25 PPG then the Giants will be solid contenders. IF they give up less than 18 PPG and score 25+ then they will be very tough. I predict they will stay playoff contenders but no more this year until they sort out their offense esp the line and how to score more. That could happen with the addition of Fluker and Marshall. Add a RB and TE and the Giants could unseat the Cowboys for the NFC East title.

Prediction: 10-6 and wild card spot. 2nd in the East.

having done the same as Dallas, post season 1 and done, and being a new coach, Ben McAdoo did great with his team. IF expectations was 8-8 than he over achieved and had his squad making the playoffs for his first season.

Stats aside and looking at reality, had less on offense with us, but had a nice weapon in Shepard. Of course Odell is better than average. Their line, while on par, was good enough. THeir defense got the job done when needed.

Their off season is as it should be, try to get better, do what you can, they hit on that.

Prediction: like last year they wont roll over and make it hard for Dallas. They have as good a chance to take the division as the Cowboys do. Expect a harder fight at the end as McAdoo will be more comfortable at his position and fear those coaches. 1st time out and they did well.

If the giants get their offense going they are trouble for the nfc. Their offense was trash last year.

Eagles looked really good to start the season then fell off but have added some pieces.

Right now, yes theres lots to go, right now we are the class of the NFCE until proven other wise but the Giants look favorable to give us the most fits for it.

With the 2nd best defense in PPG given up I'd say they are a handful. When you dissect the defense they aren't as good as they performed on paper but they got it done. I'm looking for a fall off on D from them this year but I expect the offense to score more in the 350 range perhaps more.

This is a real good thread and I've enjoyed your in-depth break down ,you've obviously put some serious effort into this one and the upcoming ones.
Unfortunately, I can only click the 'like' button one time but it's a good piece of work on your part ,you are hereby commended and recognized for a job well done.

I've clicked the ' follow thread' as I'm looking forward to the breakdown on the skins(mainly) and the upcoming draft could definitely shake everything upside down(Prescott changed us immediately)
Once again, good work and looking forward to the rest to the divisional breakdown.

With Marshall, theyre going to be a handful.

If they can get their OL issues patched up, find a decent lead back, theyll be one of the favorites in the NFC imo.

I really dont want them to get Howard or Cunningham.

Their FA will set up their draft nicely. They arent always looking to win the draft or FA war, but they find good pieces and make it work. It will be interesting to see how the draft goes down. Tho if we hit real well again, we will be very good again.

35 players from Unrestricted Free Agency

18 players drafted by the Giants

That sounds about right.

Reese can't draft for ****.

Doing business that way is going to catch up to them. To have sustained success and a healthy franchise, you have to draft well.

I think the worst case scenario for the Giants to end up with Fornette, Mixon, Cook or McCaffrey. They instantly get a lot better and they have a day one starter with their first round pick.

O. J. Howard or NJoku could be a bad deal for us too. The bright spot for us is this is reportedly a weak draft for OL, which they really need.

And with an aging Eli, if they don't get lucky and get another QB to replace him, this is why they will crash and burn and be in the dumpster for a while. By the time the build an offense after Eli, then the D will be aged and players leaving. However, they have enough now to give us fits for a few years.

I can see their D falling back a little this season, as there is a years worth of film to disect now. And Dak will have studied this off season instead of playing golf and going to Cabo........ducks...

Last year the Giants were basically the inverse of the Cowboys. We had amazing offense that if they were firing on all cylinders would cover up a bad defense and win any game. They had a defense that when firing on all cylinders would give up only 10 or 12 points, and cover up their bad offense.

On paper the Giants shouldn't have a bad offense at all. They have a quality veteran QB, good WRs, etc. Really it boils down to a bad o-line and Eli not playing very well and turning the ball over, maybe because of the o-line play.

Basically it's going to be a battle to see if the Cowboys improve enough on defense and keep playing offense like last year versus if the Giants improve on offense and keep playing defense like last year.

Honestly though, any of the NFCE teams could compete. The Commanders were in all their games last year, and easily could've swept the Cowboys like the Giants did if a couple plays went differently in our games versus them, and if Wentz takes a huge step forward in season 2 the Eagles will be a factor tool.
