This is why this Super Bowl will be remembered for a long time. The two defenses showed what Super Bowl defenses should play. The offenses played to their to their ability and it was a slug-fest where the QBs took punches all game. This is what we sit down with our pop corn expecting to see. All other Super Bowls will be judged by this one.

I'm not gonna lie.

My idea of a super bowl is Cowboys winning 52-17!

That's a good... no great! Super bowl!

Just think about this, New England did it with a lot of players who where throw offs of other teams. It takes a great evaluator of talent and a coaching staff that designs plays for those talents and turns dumpster fodder into treasure. Oh well, some day the Cowboys will do that too.

PS
I saw on another thread of the former Cowboys who went to other teams and now have Super Bowl rings. What did they know that the Cowboy's staff did not know??

New England always seems to wring the most talent possible from their players. I don't know if that is because they have such good coaches or talent evaluators or both. It really is impressive how they have remained dominant in a league that is set up to prevent such a situation from occurring with draft position, strength of schedule, salary cap etc.

That is true! The Falcons had the best young defense, the best runners, the best receivers, a MVP QB, a great defensive coach, an all-around great team. But, they did not have the GREATEST Coach at scheming and tactics. A coach that that takes notes during a game then changes his game. Oh yes, the greatest QB to walk the planet. In the long run, the New England defense showed why they were the number one defense and the 90 snaps that Brady lead finally wore down that fast young defense of the Falcons. Morale of story is if you have a great tactical/scheming coach and a great QB with a relentless defense you can win Super Bowls. The Cowboys can win a Super Bowl if they can figure this out.
The "best" young defense doesn't give up 31 points after the half.

Depends how you define it. Did the best team win Super Bowl 3? There's such a thing as an upset. The team that played the best game yesterday won. I would phrase it like that.
Yes, the best team did win Super Bowl 3.
How do we know? Because we define the best team as the team that wins. There's no other way to measure it objectively.

The best team won. Atlanta got on a roll in the playoffs and for a time in the 1st half. Their real defense showed up in the second half. The defense that struggled all season. Their running game made some dynamic plays when playing with leads during the regular season. It wasn't really built to slow a game down and that is what the Falcons needed to do in the second half. That Pats were pretty consistent the whole season. They played a poor first half, but corrected what they needed. New England was the better team and played the better game over a full 4+ quarters.

You need to look up the defensive statistics for the year for the Falcon. They were pretty awful.

Did you see how they did something that the Giants and Cowboys could not do. They beat Rogers and made the rest of the offense look average. This defense will be much, much better next year. So yes the young Falcon defense was learning its trade all season. But when the playoffs came around they were pretty darn good. If they did not have to defend 93 snaps from Brady they would have won the SB. That was the coaching staffs mistake. They learned a hard lesson from Brady and Belicheck in the SB that should go a long way in getting them to the SB this year.

In the end, that defense you speak of turned into the sieve that they more or less were all season long. The better team won the Super Bowl.

You can't reconcile a historic choke job with being the best team. Coaching and leadership from the players have to be taken into account. Play-calling in critical game situations has to be taken into account. They're all part of which team is better. It's not just a talent accumulation contest, you have to actually use it properly to be the better team.

One thing for sure is......there is no strength in the AFC East schedule for a very long time.

Funny fact that surprised me, the Patriots win % against the league as a whole is almost exactly the same as their win % over the AFC East. I'll try to dig up the source, but the Pats win at the same rate pretty much across the board from like 2001-present.
