I think a restructure would be more likely, but I doubt he will be worth $7 million a couple years from now.theogt;5077430 said:If they cut Witten -- ever.
I will stop watching this team.

Unfortunately, you have to pay for production. If his production slips, and I think it probably will, you can't pay him $7 mil.

Emmitt was released.
It happens.
If Witten is released... Then he's released.
But the day is coming where he won't be worth the salary he's paid.

Hoofbite;5077462 said:I'm sure I would still watch but I feel the same way about cutting him. You just don't do it. First and foremost, he's not a guy who's going to force you to because he can't get it done any more. Secondly, he's producing at a level that few are. If you're "cap-consciously" cutting highly productive, career-long players who define the word "professionalism", you've managed the cap poorly.

Not grounded in reality... But terrific none the less.

It is a business.
As MW points out...two of the greatest Cowboys players were released.
chip_gilkey;5077472 said:I actually think he's right. Witten isn't like Free (if the pay cut refusal rumors are true). IMO Witten retires before he goes on collecting a paycheck and sucking.
Secondly I think he's right about the cap. IF witten is still producing like he has been and we have to cut him for cap reasons then we are in serious cap trouble. I get it, the pats cut all their guys when they have one good year left, blah blah. How many times have we all thought Witten was done only to bounce back and have a great year (see: this past season).
You don't cut Ware or Romo because you THINK they are almost done. IMO Witten, Ware, and Romo are all the same caliber players.
Either way I think the discussion is moot because I really can't see Witten putting the Cowboys in a "pay me 7 million/year for no production or cut me"kind of situation. He'd either take the pay cut or retire. Again obviously all my opinion.

Don't get me wrong he is one of the most respected players on the team, and one of the most productive. It's a money thing, not a production issue.
Tony G is not in KC anymore is he ?

IF it reaches a point where he's no longer a starter and still wants to be part of the team and collect $7 mil a year... Then there will be an issue, but I agree in that I don't think he sticks around for just a paycheck.
