If they cut Witten -- ever.

I will stop watching this team.

I think a restructure would be more likely, but I doubt he will be worth $7 million a couple years from now.

Unfortunately, you have to pay for production. If his production slips, and I think it probably will, you can't pay him $7 mil.

If anyone has earned the right to go out on their own terms, it is Witten. They will restructure if need be, but in no way do I see him ever getting released. Wonder if he has any interest in coaching when hes done.

Troy was released.

Emmitt was released.

It happens.

If Witten is released... Then he's released.

But the day is coming where he won't be worth the salary he's paid.

Good point, letting my emotions play into it as well :(

This is the crap Fisher has been pushing out over the last week since the draft.

I wrote Mike after the Garrett interview once the season was over and asked him why he insisted in tossing softball questions to Jerry and Garrett.

He wrote back telling me he stopped reading when he saw softball.

I like Fish. But sometimes he can go a little coo-coo for Coco puffs.

I'm sure I would still watch but I feel the same way about cutting him. You just don't do it. First and foremost, he's not a guy who's going to force you to because he can't get it done any more. Secondly, he's producing at a level that few are. If you're "cap-consciously" cutting highly productive, career-long players who define the word "professionalism", you've managed the cap poorly.

Terrific soap box speech.

Not grounded in reality... But terrific none the less. :)

I expect him to get cut next year at the latest.

It is a business.

As MW points out...two of the greatest Cowboys players were released.

I actually think he's right. Witten isn't like Free (if the pay cut refusal rumors are true). IMO Witten retires before he goes on collecting a paycheck and sucking.

Secondly I think he's right about the cap. IF witten is still producing like he has been and we have to cut him for cap reasons then we are in serious cap trouble. I get it, the pats cut all their guys when they have one good year left, blah blah. How many times have we all thought Witten was done only to bounce back and have a great year (see: this past season).

You don't cut Ware or Romo because you THINK they are almost done. IMO Witten, Ware, and Romo are all the same caliber players.

Either way I think the discussion is moot because I really can't see Witten putting the Cowboys in a "pay me 7 million/year for no production or cut me"kind of situation. He'd either take the pay cut or retire. Again obviously all my opinion.

:laugh2:
So are you saying that by the end of this upcoming year, at the LATEST, you expect him to get cut? Laughable. Witten will still be here and producing long after any of your tight ends are still on your roster. Remember cooley? He was better than Witten once, remeber? Who is to say he won't have the longevity of Gonzo. Nothing on his resume makes me doubt it.

2014 roster on game one..I expect Witten to either retire or be released.

Don't get me wrong he is one of the most respected players on the team, and one of the most productive. It's a money thing, not a production issue.

Tony G is not in KC anymore is he ?

I don't think Witten is going to be cut in the next couple seaons.

IF it reaches a point where he's no longer a starter and still wants to be part of the team and collect $7 mil a year... Then there will be an issue, but I agree in that I don't think he sticks around for just a paycheck.

Witten turns 31 in 2 days. You really think he's gone before/right after he's 33? As I stated above neither I nor many others on here thinks that he will put the Cowboys in a situation like that. IF his production declines I expect him to accept a pay cut. No way do I see him falling off so badly by the end of this season that the boys say, gee just can't keep him around anymore. A 70% Witten is still better than anything we have right now.

And tony G wanted out of KC to be with a contender before he lost it and retired and they did him a favor.

This isn't even a secret.

Any team who can draft players outside of the first round and get production on par with veterans is in the exact same position.

Not to mention "replacing" Austin with Williams carries dead money. Cutting him prior to these years results in the following.

2014: $7.8M (Cap # $8.2M)
2015: $5.1M (Cap # $9.6M)
2016: $2.3M (Cap # $12.5M)

Best case, he's cut before 2015. Certainly not going to cut a guy with a relatively unknown player stepping up from #3 just to save 400K. More likely hes around through 2015.

Scandrick is sort of the same deal, cost the same to keep or cut.

This isn't some secret. Any team who can replace high priced vets with rookie contract is likely to do so. I can't imagine would use that as a significant factor in the decision process. You can't pass on players because they won't be replacing high contracts the following year. That's just nuts.

If this was the case and it was a significant part of Dallas' decision process, Dallas would have likely went with a DE in the earlier part of the draft in order to avoid giving Spencer a contract.

And then there's the part about Dallas wanting to go with 2TEs. Doesn't make sense to focus so much on the 2TE formation and then immediately go back to the drawing board on where you get your 2nd TE.....provided your current one can even live up to the guy he is supposedly replacing.

well prepare to stop watching because it will eventually happen

I can assure you that if Tom Laundry can be fired, Troy Aikman and Emmitt Smith can be released, Witten will have his turn in time.

So if he's going to get cut next season "at the latest", are you implying that he may be cut after June 1st?

Witten had one of this best seasons last year. He's not getting cut this season, next season, or the season after.

Stop trolling.

No it's grounded in reality. The reality that I'm a fan of the team and if this current organization tries to sell cutting Witten as a cap move, I'll laugh simply out of disgust and point to the dozens of other cap mistakes they have made that even made cutting Witten a possibility.
