The Cornerback

There has been a lot of conversation lately about the possibility of the Cowboys drafting a cornerback early in the draft and allowing Anthony Henry to move to free safety.

First of all, I don't really want to debate the merits of these talks. It's been my experience that if Jerry or the media says something that you agree with, then he's telling the truth. But if something is said that fans aren't crazy about, then it's just a smokescreen. So let's ignore all of that and just assume, for the sake of argument, that this is a possibility.

If so, who's the corner? Who is the guy (or guys) that would make sense to Dallas? Obviously, everything in the draft depends on the board and who gets selected in the first 17 picks.

I've kind of bunched these players by the latest things I have read and heard...

Antonio Cromartie
Tye Hill
Johnathan Joseph

Jimmy Williams
Kelly Jennings
Ashton Youboty

Jason Allen
Richard Marshall
Cedric Griffin

Dee Webb
Demario Minter
Anwar Phillips
Daniel Manning

So who makes the most sense?

Being that it appears our new biggest division rival is Washington and they have nothing but burners in Randle El,Lloyd(aka Henrys Pimp),and Moss (aka Roys pimp), it could very well be burner Hill. On the flipside, a guy like Cromartie would be a solution to Plaxico.

Randel-El and Lloyd aren't burners.

I do like Hill, though.

While I'm not sold on the fact that we are going CB with our 1st pick, it does make some sense when you look at how the draft could fall.

At 18, what if this is our choices:

1st or 2nd best CB on our board?
1st or 2nd best WR on our board?
2nd or 3rd best safety on our board?
2nd or 3rd best tackle?
3rd or 4th best LB'er on our board?

Antonio Cromartie if healthy would be a steal at #18
I like Cromartie, and would not be mad at all if we drafted him at 18. This is one of those drafts that I dont really care who we draft. :starspin

I prefer Kelly Jennings. He is the safest pick of the players that are likely to be available to us in the first two rounds.

I'd rather leave our secondary the way it is and draft Cedric Griffin or Danieal Manning in the 3rd to play FS .

Of all the postions WR is the scary one for me, Holmes is talented but small some consider him frail. Jackson looks better than he plays.

I'd like one of these T,S/CB, OLB, NT. I really fear us going to camp with only fergie to hold up in the 3-4. It's such a tough ans phyiscal position.

Right on Margarita man. That would be my first choice also. Add Alan Zemaitis and Pat Watkins to that list. I'll take any of those four at 80 and feel like we can probably check FS off the list of issues for a long time.

Dallas wont get a CB for the first pick... Dallas doesn't need to pick players for a position that is one of their strengths... Dallas has 1 super, shutdown CB, 1 big, tough, physical CB, 1 veteran, experienced, nickel CB (former 1st round pick), and 1 up and coming, young CB.

I love Zemaitis and Watkins , but I think both go in the second or early third . If either is there though...sign them !

If we pick a CB in the first round I will go ballistic because we already have three high quality CBs on the roster a developmental guy in Reeves who showed some improvement last year.

We should stop this position-changing nonsense. Henry was a quality CB that we gave $5M/year to last year and he played well when healthy and should be fully recovered by TC.

The problem we have is at safety - just draft one of the top prospects in the second or third round.

We really need to invest more heavily in our LBs and OL at present.

It is a shame the FS spot was not filled in FA because I would really rather not draft one at all given our deficiencies elsewhere.

I think Coleman is still an option for us at FS, should he resolve his drinking problem--supposedly he working on that right now. We should have inside track given his friendship with Aaron Glenn, relationship with Parcells & Dallas is awfully close to Houston so he wouldn't have to move his family depending on length of contract.

I am pretty convinced this cornerback/safety switch deal is nothing but Jerry Jones having some fun. The economics don't make adding another high priced cornerback to the mixture very appealing.

There is a business side to consider. Remember, both Terrence Newman and Roy Williams are coming due very soon.

I'm on board with this. We have bigger needs at 18 than CB.

I don't think we are considering a cornerback at 18 or moving Henry to free safety. I think this is a smokescreen thrown out there by Jerry. There are several teams drafting right behind us that are looking for DB help. We need one of these teams to to trade down with to try and recoup more 1st day picks.

I would take anything Jerry said with a grain of salt.

I think this CB thing is a big longshot. If JJ was being honest about this I think he might have meant Tye Hill slipping to 18. Big money or not, that guy could start as a rookie and give us one sick secondary. He's the only guy I could see us even considering moving Henry to FS for. Cromartie is a good prospect also but it would probably make more sense to move him to FS than Henry- he has a FS's body and even with the position change it's an easier spot for a rookie to start than CB.
