I am right there with you, as I have followed the Cowboys since the "Ice Bowl" and lived and breathed every game over the decades. The build up during the week and then putting aside any noises, any unfinished tasks and focusing in on the TV to watch 3 hours of absolute excitement and heartbreak. The highest highs and lowest lows. The 2 loses to the Steelers in the SB's and "the catch", folliwed by Danny White making the perfect thrown and a jersey tackle loses the game. And the Sanders pass interference non call against Michael, that stopped a 4 peat.
I know you are having some fun, but also being serious that this is an opportunity for Dak to really show his worth. I happen to think that Dak is someone who is always trying to get better, any little edge he can gain. I know he is very aware of the bad playoff performances and he wants to atone for them. I truly believe that Dak is physically the quarterback we saw against Tampa Bay in the wildcard game. That physically he is as good as anyone in the league. But that he has failed to deal with the "pressure" of the playoffs.
I remember Troy saying that at the start of his first superbowl, (which I happened to be lucky enough to attend in the Rose Bowl) that he was throwing the ball 10 yards over the head of the receivers the first few throws in warming up, due to adrenaline and nerves. Of course he calmed down quickly and had a steller game. But the way pressure impacts someone is unpredictable. I have often thought that Dak needed to talk with Troy and other guys to pick their minds about how they dealt with pressure. I imagine he has. I see a different Dak this year. An extremely determined player. I feel like physically his play is so good now, that he is in a zone and he has over come the nervousness that has defined his high pressure moments.
I know I am in the minority, but I think this team is only going to get better this year. This idea that you are "always" what your record says you are, is just not true imo. As recently as the superbowl that was proved out. Last year KC was no where near as good as some other seasons where they had a worse win loss record. Last year they got every favorable call and bounce and won games they simply were not worthy of winning and that was exposed in the superbowl.
The Cowboys are only about 3 plays, a Lamb catch, Micah misses that tackle of Dak from behind etc., from being 5-1 right now. And that is with a defense playing horribly except the Jets game and some moments here and there. I mean the defense was good in the second half against the Eagles and good in the overtime against Green Bay.
It is only the Chicago game where the team did not look like the superior team in the 6 games played up till now, and that is entirely due to losing Lamb. The early nineties Cowboys, who I think are the greatest NFL team ever, would crumble when Emmitt was out or Michael went out of a game. It is a shock to your system to lose the soul of your team.
And the offense recovered quickly by the next week with Pickens featured.
I think if the defense plays as sharp as they did the whole game against the Jets, that that makes the defense 10-15 percent better. Which is enough to dramatically change the win loss results with such a good offense as they have.
And that is down to the coaches preparing the defense better. So they hit the field on point, believing in themselves.
Because the league is so even across all teams, no one is pulling away. So the Cowboys are not out of it at all right now.
It is not so easy, not so common, to have such a balanced high octane offense as they have AND the best field goal kicker ever, at the same time. That kind of excellence is rare and like any high quality thing, it will have a tendency to overcome and rise to the top. And to my mind it is much more likely that the whole team moves in the direction of their best qualities, rather than their worst qualities. So not likely 13-3-1 of course, but 10 or 11 wins and a team that is rolling come the playoffs, I can see that.
