The Cowboys have prioritized two spots on the roster in offseason, per Jerry

If you have an hour and 10 minutes to burn listen to the whole thing. If you don't, listen to the 37:48 - 45:17 mark. Jerry's asked about free agency and he responds that there are two spots on the roster "where we got wounded if we don't at least have that position back". Jerry speak I believe for either we have to resign our own there or we need to find another of the same quality or better.

One of the reporters later says he must be talking about two spots on defense. Jerry's reply indicates that's not true. He doesn't say it's not true but it's pretty clear it's not true.

So these spots are our priority heading into FA. I believe those two positions have to be WR and CB. I do not believe he's talking about DE because the Cowboys are actually adding players there from last year with Lawrence and Tapper.

What say you? What the heck is he talking about?

On a side note, in this interview your owner actually says "I know why we had the success we had last year. Our overachieving defense." then goes on to say "I believe we're gonna improve defensively but I certainly think we can maintain where we are."

Breathe that one in.

Yeah, I didn't listen to it..but he's definitely talking WR and CB...

Maybe this team makes a move in FA for a good WR or CB

I posted in another thread that I felt it was referring to corner and safety. And an either/or deal with Carr/Claiborne and Church/Wilcox. And I still think that's preference #1. The "not necessarily" part for me was about #2 receiver, but not necessarily about having to keep Terrance Williams. More like that if Williams leaves, to get a suitable replacement in free agency or the draft.

That was my impression anyway.

Regarding the last quote.
He is correct in thinking maintaining last years defense is realistic. Who are these awesome free agents or players waiting to be drafted at the end of the first round who are going to change this?
I believe Jerry would have went after a premier pass rusher or premier CB this offseason. But I can understand why paying an average player premier money isn't going to be a winning strategy.

And we do need WR help.

I think your correct about CB and WR as the priorities. We are currently lacking proven depth at both positions. You might be able to make an argument about safety but if have heard a few times that our scouts are still really high on Kavon Frazier and are hoping he gets his fair share of minutes this year to prove hes another late round gem.

Definitely talking about CB and WR.

If we simply maintain what we are on defense then that is a major fail.
Not a major fail. A minor fail since there isn't anyone out there who is worth paying for and would actually satisfy fans needs to say we have improved. It sucks and no one likes it but look around the league. Who is out there worth paying? Jake Long? Nah.

If the defense is not improved this offseason then it is a major fail.

There is nothing controversial about the statement and everyone knows it to be true.

Who said anything about it being done in F.A. by finding someone worth paying?

same crap every year. jerry and Stephen jones still do not value a top ranked defense. I guess he is thinking that if we have a great offense we can outscore our own defense to win games. that works in the regular season but in the playoffs defense wins championships.

Yep, he basically gave it away - CB and WR.
Instead of resigning TWill and Carr or Mo, we can easily upgrade in FA.
Unlike DEs, only 1 player (Johnson) was franchised.
In terms of SS, we could readily play Heath there - by saying 2 positions - he gave away they could play Heath at SS.
The backup would be Frazier, but ideally we would resign one of Church or Wilcox and draft 1 more.

Without listening I'd think he's talking about the secondary. TWill is solid but replaceable IMO. Its alot more difficult to find good CBs and not break the bank. Safety is another thing all together but I think Church's knowledge & leadership will be missed if he walks (I like JJ's progess this season but Frazier has the same skill set, albiet unproven).

As far as "staying put" defensively, maybe theyre banking of having the full compliment of DL with another offseason of "Marinelli Magic" to help the pass rush! I'm sure they will add something to the mix via the draft or free agency... I just think JJ was saying don't look for that "wow" move chasing improvement.
