Everyone can read and run straight for the Pepto. The all time draft bust/blunder team. I dont go back further than when I started watching the team, so there might be some people that belong here left off pre-1975. I also dont include any players who had their careers ended prematurely by injury (ie, Sherrard, LaFleur, Cannon)

QB- Quincy Carter (2001)...should have never been a 2nd rd pick to begin with, and turned into a train wreck on and off the field. One of Jones worst decisions as a GM. Not only was he a bad pick, we traded up to get him.

RB- Darryl Clack (1986)- alot of people wont even remember him, but he was the 33rd pick overall that yr. Making it worse were the guys we passed on, Pepper Johnson, Erick Howard, Tom Newberry, Mark Collins, Kenneth Davis, Webster Slaughter and John Offerdahl. Clack rushed for 19 yds his rookie yr, rushed for a grand total of 113 yds in his career and never amounted to anything more than an avg KO return guy.

FB- Nicky Sualua (1997)- has to be one on the team. He was a 4th rd pick and had all sorts of issues on and off the field.

WR- Alexander Wright (1990) picked in the 2nd rd with the top pick in that round (26th overall) he never amounted to anything more that an abv avg kick returner. Turned in one of the alltime great combine workouts ever and Jimmy fell in love with him. They traded him to the Raiders 2yrs later, never caught more than 11 passes as a Cowboy and his career high was 27 (once, with the Raiders). Jimmy passed on Terry Woodon, Don Blackmon, Keith Sims (the OL), Leroy Butler & Pat Terrell for Wright

WR- Doug Donley (1981)..picked in the 2nd rd, never amounted to much and was out of football after 4 mediocre seasons

TE- Kendall Watkins (1995)...part of that horrible trio of 2nd rd picks, he never had a position...was slow and couldnt move, they tried him at OL too...

T- Howard Richards (also 1981)...picked in the first rd, Richards was a classic bust...started a total of 18 games in 7ys...and to think we passed on Mike Singletary, Chris Collinsworth (later drafting Donley in the same rd) RB Joe Delaney (sensational RB talent, died in a tragic accident), CB Eric Wright, Howie Long, Ricky Jackson and the original Marion Barber, look at that list! One of Brandt's all time stupid, ignorant awful picks

T- Jacob Rogers (2004)..2nd rd pick that yr, Parcells ignored virtually everyone in the Cowboys organization and drafted him anyway. Clearly one of Parcells worst decisions

G- Shane Hannah (1995) one of the trio of terrible 2nd rd picks after Jones traded out of the 1st rd..some had Hannah rated as a late 2nd day pick that yr...was a horrible player

G- Stephen Peterman (2004)...Parcells again ignored scouts, drafted this guy and then hardly gave him a shot..is a journeymen a best

C- Clay Shiver (1997)...not only was he an terrible center, he was part of another Jones trade down that netted us Kavika Pittman and Shiver instead of top-15 DE talent Tony Brackens, who had surprinsgly fell in our lap that yr

DE- Larry Bethea (1978)...Ed Jones once said he was responsible for this bad pick, because Cowboy management knew he was going to walk away after the season to try boxing...Bethea played 6yrs and only started 2 games, and never amounted to anything other than a waste of roster space

DE Kavika Pittman (1996) I picked Pittman over Shante Carver for a few reasons. 1st, he spent 2yrs on the bench and never started until his 3rd yr, totaled only 10 sacks in 4 seasons and was part of one of the dumbest trade downs Jones ever did, when he passed on Tony Brackers, and traded down for Pittman and Clay Shiver

DT Danny Noonan (1987) We dont have much to pick from here, but Noonan was chosen 12th overall to be the next Randy White, and instead he was an avg player...Noonan had one good yr (his 2nd) and a bunch of lousy to mediocre ones...another embarassing note, he couldnt beat out the next guy on this list for a starting job his rookie yr..passed on Tony Woods, Harris Barton, Bruce Armstrong and Haywood Jefferis

DT Kevin Brooks (1985)..Brooks, like Pittman sat on the pine for two whole yrs before becoming a starter, and wasnt a very good one...Jerry Gray was the best player chosen a few picks after Brooks that we passed on

OLB Bobby Carpenter (2006)...basically has no future here and was a wasted pick, Parcells passed on ultra talented CB Antonio Cromartie and several other good looking prospects for this guy, who he drafted with his heart instead of his brain

OLB Jesse Penn (1985) was picked in the middle of the 2nd rd and started only 1 games in his careere.

MLB Robert Jones (1992)...Jimmy creamed himself over another workout warrior. He started his rookie yr and was adequate at best, then was benched after becoming an obvious weakness to the defense the next yr...played in the league for a number of average seasons, but never became the dominant player Jimmy thought he'd be. Everybody thought Miami FS Darryl Williams would be the pick here, and were shocked when it wasnt. It was the 2nd time Jimmy passed on one of his own recruits at safety. (the other was Bubba McDowell in 1989 when we took Rhondy Weston, who was cut in camp I think)

CB Rod Hill (1982)- at this point it was obvious that Brandt had lost his touch, as he made arguably his worst and dumbest pick ever with Rod Hill, from nobody school Kentucky St....nobody knew who he was and he was just awful on the field...was out of Dallas after two seasons and never started a game here...Bubba Paris and Andre Tippett were two of teh notables Brandt passed on for this scrub

CB Dwayne Goodrich (2000)- looked like a 1st rd pick early in his Tennessee career, then stunk it up...Goodrich was expected to eb a 2nd day pick when Lacewell/Jones took him with the 49th pick..was never any good on the field, and then was huge trouble off it

SS Tony Dixon (2001)...another bad pick by Jones/Lacewell...made a handful of plays while here, but never developed...we passed on Shaun Rogers, Tavris Henry and Andre Dyson, and to make matters worse the Cardinals chose Adrian Wilson 8 picks later

FS Stan Smagala (1990) I am sure I could have come up with a bigger name, but Smagala is here as much for sucking as a player as for being one of Jimmy dumbest draft day moves. We didnt exactly draft Smagala, as he was a 5th rd pick of the Raiders. But Jimmy loved this guy and traded FIVE draft picks to get him. Was out of the league after 2yrs and never started a game.

Honarable Mention:

Rhondy Weston (1989) he was only a 3rd rd pick, but Jimmy took this loser who didnt even make it out of preseason instead of his own guy, Bubba McDowell, who went 9 picks later. McDowell made multiple probowls for Houston, and played a position we had to use alot of picks/players on in coming yrs (safety)

Great list. I was thinking of doing something similar on who we passed up over the years.

Shante Carver

Also until Bobby Carpenter is no longer a Cowboy you cant consider him a bust.

He may end up having a solid Bradie James type career for us you never know.

I explained why I didnt pick Carver, as for Carpenter...the guys not getting on the field here unless a whole bunch of guys get hurt...he doesnt have a future here...if he was a 3rd or 4th rd pick it'd be different, but he was the 19th overall pick

Spears has started all but 6 games here since he was picked, despite the hatred here for him by some...he does his job and stops the run

he isnt a world beater but he's far from a bust

TE David LeFlur (think thats how his last name is spelled) was a pretty big first round bust for us no?

No. He(LaFleur) was a decent player until his back injury took him out of the game. People were upset because we traded up to get him.

He started 44 games and was an outstanding blocker.

I'd have to say no, like I said if a player had his career ended early by injury I didnt count them, and he did (back)

when he was healthy he was pretty good. You have to remember he played most of his time for Chan Gailey, who has never beleived in throwing to the TE...still he did have one yr with 35 catches and 7 tds and he was an outstanding run blocker

Agreed.

Spears is a bust in terms of what I thought we were getting but had we drafted this guy in the 2nd round on down we would be more than happy with the player we picked.

The player he was at LSU was just crazy good. He had some Reggie White in him.

and they really shouldnt have been. He was rated by everybody as a 1st rd pick...Blesto even had him as the 9th best player in the draft that yr

we got him with the 22nd pick

he would be a far more pruductive player as a LDE in the 4-3 defense IMO..he still has time to get betetr here though, but a 3-4 DE is never going to consistently put up huge numbers

Yeah that was a stupid decision by Jimmy, but at least we got a good return on him (multiple picks from the Saints)

We selected Doug Cosbie 76th overall in 1979 going against our board, per Gil Brandt, and passed on a skinny QB from Notre Dame who went 6 picks later to San Francisco. :banghead:
No matter how many accomplishments Doug Cosbie had, there's no debate whether we wiffed on that pick compared to what coulda , woulda, shoulda been.

yeah, but Montana might have never amounted to anything here... and we can so woulda coulda shoulda for every yr in the books for every team in the league

I just picked an all bust team...guys we drafted or way overdrafted that clearly stunk on the field (and in a few cases, off the field too)

Brilliant article. Loved reading it.

1st time I've heard of Daryl Clack for a while! I remember reading as a kid that he would pave the way for Dorsett's retirement!

Also the Stan Smagala trade from the Raiders was really weird to me in the Uk at the time. Never heard anything after he was traded because JImmy loved him......nothing....just vanished!

Thanks again dbair.
