or the fact i asked you to tell me the history of who we have ever drafted at #22 and #28 in the 1st round. after you showed me i realized we drafted garbage at those picks. plus jerry has been struggling drafting secondary players if you haven't noticed.
I like my theory better.

No Ebenezer Ekuban? The guy was a first round pick out of N. Carolina and never made an impact with the Cowboys.

We waited and waited for this guy to live up to his draft status.

Bethea was a sad, sad case... gut-wrenching, really. I wonder if mental illness fits somewhere in the injury category...

Here's an interesting guy...

Margene Adkins, who had starred in the CFL, was a second round pick by the Cowboys in 1970. I was told by someone who maybe would know that he might have been the most physically gifted WR the Cowboys had drafted to that point. Now I'm sure Bob Hayes would have had something to say about that. But he was considered an all-world talent.

Adkins played college football at Henderson County JC and jumped to the CFL. I was told that he simply could not (or did not) learn an NFL offense. He couldn't translate his talent to the field. It would be tempting to blame Landry's complex offense, but Adkins never played much anywhere else, though he had his chances.

He had great talent, by all accounts.

If Parcells wouldn't have shown up Ekuban and Flozell would both be on this list.

There's any number of guys from the Jerry/Lacewell years that belong here. But Shane Hannah would rate at or near the top, along with Watkins, Shiver, Ulafale, Goodrich, Quincy, T. Dixon, etc.

oh, good times.

That's a great (great????)... let me rephrase that... a well thought-out list and pretty comprehensive. You have to go back to before your time to add guys like Richmond Flowers, Dennis Homan, David McDaniels, Bill Thomas, and Charley Young. Flowers was to be a DB or wideout (in desparation to save the pick)... Homan and McDaniels were WRs. Thomas and Young were RBs. Al early picks.

The Cowboys were snakebitten with injuries for a while... Robert Shaw, but also Billy Cannon Jr., whom they thought would be an outstanding linebacker. In a way, Steve Kiner, because of his personal problems, was a bust at LB... could have been very good.

Tody Smith was a first round DL bust, but was valuable in a trade-up to get Too Tall Jones, if I recall correctly...

Yeah, Bill Thomas is the guy who comes to my mind. If I recall correctly he was drafted the 1st round out of Boston College. .... The Cowboy had seemingly struck gold with 1st round RBs not long before (Calvin Hill was rookie of the year and a fine back before nagging lingering injuries limited him; Duane Thomas was special while on the field), so expectations were high for Bill Thomas. ... but it just didn't work out for him. (not sure if it was an injury or what).

I've heard older-timers mention a lineman by the name of Appleton. Apparently he showed next to nothing despite being a very high draft pick during the first few years of the franchise. He didn't last long. He might not have even made the team. Older timers here (or google.com checkers) can fill in the details.

Just like I could pick some from the Jimmy/Jerry days and the Parcells days.

For every Haley (trade) and Emmitt that Jimmy acquired he had a Curvin Richards and Terrence Flagler that he whiffed on.

And, Parcells was borderline ******** with his OL picks in Dallas.

I didn't read everyone's posts...but if Dennis Homan isn't ahead of Donley, this all bust team is a bust. :)

First round selection. Played two years for the Cowboys. Stunk.

common denominator here is the fact that many on this list are Parcell's clunkers...

Dbair1967, that is one very impressive compilation. Very good analytical work. It brought back memories, all bad, of some of the bad picks we have made. Here are a few extra thoughts:

David LaFleur.....I would also put him on the list just because Jerry got schooled and humiliated by Ray Rhodes on that trade up with Philly to draft LaFleur.

Kendall Watkins....but don't forget he threw that wicked illegal pick in the Super Bowl that allowed Aikman to throw that goal line TD pass to Novacek. I can still hear Paul McQuire going nuts with hatred over it.

Steve Walsh....Jimmy picked him in the 1989 supplemental draft which means we forfeited our first round pick in the 1990 draft, although we had the worst record in the league. Atlanta (picking first) had the second worst record, but traded that pick to the Colts for WR Andre Rison, T Chris Hinton, #5 (121) 1991 #1 (13) used on T Reggie Redding, WR Mike Pritchard. Indy drafted Jeff George who refused to go to Atlanta. Now think had we had that pick to trade to Indy for those players? Wow!! ( Jimmy did draft Alexander Wright with the first pick in the second round).

By the way...great work by you other posters who remember such players as Dennis Homan, Bill Gregory, etc.

Don't forget top add Randy Hughes to that injury snakebitten list. Had he not been injured, he would have been one of our all time grate SS's.

Howard Richards or Robert Shaw anyone?, We spent first round draft choices on these guys, Shaw got hurt early and Richards was horrible, I believe he was either Rayfield Wright's or Pat Donovan's replacement.

Robert Shaw does not need to be labeled a bust. He was a very promising center until his career was cut short by injuries.

We selected Doug Cosbie 76th overall in 1979 going against our board, per Gil Brandt, and passed on a skinny QB from Notre Dame who went 6 picks later to San Francisco. :banghead:
No matter how many accomplishments Doug Cosbie had, there's no debate whether we wiffed on that pick compared to what coulda , woulda, shoulda been.

Interesting post of yours. I wonder who had the final say on picking Cosbie?
As I understand it, Landry would only stay for the first two rounds, then leave the remaining rounds to Brandt and Schramm.
