It was the right decision at the time, and subsequent events have proven that the player that was not selected in the first round by Dallas in 2014 was not what the team needed

In his recent series on the five biggest moments that contributed to the success of the Dallas Cowboys in 2014, rabblerousr ranked the decision to draft Zack Martin and pass over Heisman Trophy winner Johnny Manziel as the third most important. As you may recall, the national media was stunned and perhaps a little dismayed when this happened. They realized that a rich vein of stories about the impetuousness of Jerry Jones was not going to be given to them to use to perpetuate the meme about his ineptitude as a general manager. Their fascination with the possibilities of having the Manziel circus come to Dallas was apparent in the coverage months after the fact of the mythical "card snatched out of Jerry Jones' hand" story. Now that Manziel has elected to enter rehab for his problems with alcohol abuse and the ensuing out of control behavior, it is apparent just how big a storm of negative press the Cowboys avoided. And you know what kind of a storm I refer to.

I don't know about a card snatching being true or not but I do know Jerry whined like a little girl for months after JF alcoholic wasn't a Cowboy.
Who ever stopped Jerry deserved exec of the year.

Manziel was at the top of the draft board. The process would have drafted him.

How happy was I when the first round went the way it did...I was VERY vocal in NOT wanting this child as a cowboy, and then to get a Notre Dame guy (I am a staunch ND fan), I almost cried...

thank God that Johnny DT's didn't come to Dallas

The future of the Cowboys is bright if Stephen really did tell his father no when he tried to draft Johnny football. It gives me hope that Stephen will run a solid team when he takes over from his father.

No he wasn't.
Jerry's maybe, certainly not the team's.

At most (and I doubt it) he was tiered with Martin and Mosley. They had Martin as 9th.
No way on anyone's board except maybe Jerry's private one was Johnny higher than 9.

if you put an "IF" in front of your statement, you would have nailed it.

True, but I don't hold these things against a decision maker. The, well...he actually wanted to do this but didn't. The bottom line is the decision was right. No matter what led to it. Jimmy Johnson wasn't intending to draft Emmitt Smith, but at the end of the day he did.

The good news is this couldn't have worked out any better. Not only this particular decision but for the future. Martin couldn't be any more of a success and a positive impact to the team. Manziel couldn't have had a worse rookie year on and off the field. He looks like a bad player and a team destroyer. There's no reason for the GM not to keep listening to the same people who steered him away from Manziel and toward Martin. So this decision was great for the Cowboys and the ramifications of the decision may be even better for the team.

Kind of like the 3 first round picks along the OL. Jerry's never done that. Chances are if the results weren't significant he may never go there again, but Smith, Frederick and Martin have shown him how impactful those picks can be if you choose the right players. So not only do the Cowboys get those 3 blue chip players but now they have a GM who has a completely different mindset to using those first round picks in the future. Yes, you can win using premium picks on the trenches. You don't need "sexy". You're not going to turn off the fan base. Fans are smart enough to know what an offensive guard or center can do for a football team.

I'm pretty sure Johnny Rehab is in there for more than alcohol treatment.

maybe. there are very few people in life i've cared for less than johnny football. i hated him on the field. i hate his money money money routine, i hate his smug face, and i hated the fact we had to talk about him for so long and even now, rumors and people who hate jones still reach for whatever they can to make this more than it is.

whatever it is, he's looking for help and i wish him well.

I didn't really want Martin, but the way the draft fell, it was a no brainer. Maturity issues aside, I just didn't think Johnny had NFL skills.

I thought Johnny would be fine in the NFL but was wrong. It surely is as much a mental game as physical & I thought he was going to be more mature. Wrong!

He really needs to grow up & act like a man.

The crazy thing is that so many members here wanted him.

Bottom line - Johnny " College " Football is an immature, fraud, bust, franchise killer.

It would be interesting to see some of the folks that wanted the Cowboys to draft this kid, comment on the current situation.

Plenty of old threads in the Draft Zone that were interesting, that's for sure.

Stuff like..
"it would be the best pick Jerry ever made"
"cry tears of joy if we took Johnny Football"
"we'd be set for 7-8 years" and "Johnny would lead us out of the dark ages"
"Please God, let us get Manziel" time to move on from loser Tony
"MUST take JF at 16 if by some miracle he falls there"
"use the 1st, 3rd, and 4th round picks to trade up for Johnny Football"
"tired of Romo crapping the bed....would set us up for a decade"
"would be ecstatic" "sick of 1 playoff win"

etc

I passed on naming names, but you get the point.
