The best thing about Wade Phillips being named head coach of the Dallas Cowboys is that he & his dad, Bum, were some of the pioneers of the 3-4 defense in the NFL. He runs it how it was meant to be run--take your best players, and utilize their skills to the utmost in attacking the opponent.
Attack is the key word. Too many times last year, the Cowboys acted like they didn't know if they should attack or use the bend-but-don't-break theory. What they ended up getting was a confused secondary that gave up way too many big plays. They also put down way too few sacks with talent that should have been burying people.

Phillips will change all that. The best friend to a secondary is a wide open attacking front 7 that slants, stunts, and blitzes when least expected. Too many times last year, we had 6-7 players already standing at the LOS 2-3 seconds before the ball was snapped. Way to surprise 'em, there, BP.

Wade Phillips will discover, the get the most out of players like DWare, Carp, Spears, Hatcher, Ayodele, and Roy W. That is why I wouldn't be surprised at all if the first pick in this year's draft is a FS or CB. There is a reason Henry's agent came out of nowhere to let the team & media know that his client is willing to try FS. He got hammered too many times at the CB position. That's why a CB makes sense. Grab a guy like Daymeion Hughes, who is a super playmaker at CB, and work Henry at FS. That way, we'll have playmakers at every secondary position. The most important thing it will do is allow "The Beast" to do what he does best, make plays in the box.

The one thing I hope doesn't happen is that Phillips will forget we need serious help at the OL. We desperately need a Manuel Ramirez type at RG, and a Joe Staley-Doug Free LT prospect to groom to take over for Flo when he retires. If Phillips can get the secondary finally settled, and beef up the OL, then we have a great chance to take the next step in the playoffs.

its possible. i think a more accurate account would be to say that we will find out if our defense is as talented as we thought it was.

I hope you're right, Cogan. The more I think about Phillips utilizing our talent on D the right way, the more excited I get. I just worry that our hopes may be too high. There may be some growing pains and adjustments to make at first, but hopefully by the end of the season, our D will be strong enough to prevent another late season slide.

even if it isnt, I am 1000 times more confident in the new coaching staff's ability to get more out of what we have than the Parcells/Zimmer dynamic dunderhead duo we've seen for years

Remember, the San Dog defense was ranked # 10 in 2006.

Zimmer's D was ranked # 13.

Do not expect major miracles.
