The danger of losing Miles Austin

Miles Austin is a restricted free agent. Since he was undrafted if the Cowboys place the low tender on him he can get scooped up (most likely by the Dolphins), and the Cowboys get no draft compensation.

2nd round tender -- 1.45 million.
1st round tender -- 2.2 million

Frankly, given the ridiculous amounts of money the Cowboys have invested in the WR position with the contracts that TO, Roy E and Patrick Crayton make how likely do you think it is they can afford to pay a 4th WR 1.45 million. This combined with the fact that he won't even be able to contribute as a kick returner if Felix reclaims those duties next year. And this is something they can't prorate or ***** on the cap ..this is 1.45 flat 1 year contrat.

I"m thinking the Miles Austin situation might influence a decision on keeping TO pretty soon rather than waiting until June.

Interesting.

They have to find a way to keep Austin.

I think Miles is the #3 next year, with a legit shot at being #2 if TO is sent packing.

I thought tenders were in place to make sure that we get compensated if someone else signs him, but we still have the option to sign him to a long term contract at a lower cap value.

Couldn't we just re-sign Austin and cut either Hurd or Stanback without having much of a loss?

why pay a receiver who won't be in your offense

I think we have to let Austin, barring TO is still on the team

The question is why Miles Austin wants to get locked up in a long term cheap contract when he's coming into his own as a player at the same time he's ready to hit the market.

Also, Stephen Bowen and Tony Curtis are also undrafted players who are restricted free agents. If the Cowboys put the low tender on either of them I would expect them to be signed by someone else. They're not superstars, but they're young and proven they can be solid role players. Especially Bowen. Losing Bowen combined with losing Canty would be a huge blow to the depth on the DL. Including Tank that would be losing half of our defensive linemen roster spots from last year that need to be filled this offseason (no wonder they were scouting DL at the Senior Bowl).

Ya I think so. Jerry will find a way to keep this guy. He;s just too talented to let go because you have alot of money invested in OTHER WR's. If TO is gone than Miles gets signed no question. I hope we keep him.

I wouldnt be upset if we gave him a 2nd round tender and someone else signed him....especially if it was someone who had a top five 2nd round pick.

noone would sign him to that tender
so Austin would get all that money and only see about 20 passes thrown his way

Here is one instance where I agree with letting TO go. Miles Austin is obviously an athlete - younger legs, better personality, etc.

You always favor the guy with the fresher legs over the guy with the older legs. Especially when you're paying a #2 WR #1 money.

Interesting. Hopefully Austin doesn't go anywhere. He's my favorite WR on the team.

They will tender him with the high offer and either get him signed up for a few years or they'll be getting the #1 from some team ready to snatch him up and use him.
