Carpenter wasnt a surprise pick, as many have noted...we will never know for sure if he was REALLY the highest rated player on the Cowboy board (as Ireland said) but he was a good player at a great program, and perfectly fits what we are doing on defense...he can play the run well, drops into coverage extremely well and is a very good pass rusher/blizter...when you add in the intangibles (father was a football player, plays with great emotion, regarded as a leader etc etc) he was a solid pick at 18, and its doubtful we could have traded down much and still got him

I wasnt surprised we picked Fasano, I was a little surprised we picked him in the 2nd but I kinda thought he'd be on our radar screen...he does improve our offensive scheme and is great insurance if something were to happen to Witten (please, Hannam, Pierce or Ryan as a starter???)...he is a better TE than Dan Campbell right now and has alot of upside...we definitely have two quality TE's now

I know nothing about Hatcher other than what I read and heard, and I missed the NFL Network highlight on him...he obviously wasnt a "need" pick so one can only assume he truly was the highest rated player on our board at the time he was picked, plus we got a 4th rounder as well...Mel Kiper "draft expert" knew nothing about this kid, or if he did he didnt bother to talk about it and ESPN didnt have any highlights

we added 3 extra 2nd day picks and that has to be factored in...overall it wasnt a bad day...we all knew going in this wouldnt be a "sexy" draft, and thats why there is so much complaining...doesnt mean it was a bad day though

Great post David.

It is much easier to fly off the handle and yell doom and gloom then to post something sensible. I think today we have enough ammonition to add some quality players that should be a product of our revamped scouting department.

One thing that shoudln't be overlooked is the fact that all three players seem genuinely enthusiastic about playing football and giving 100% on every snap.

No more Dwayne Goodrichs and Kareem Larrimores.

These are guys that you feel good about cheering for and who bring a positive, workman-like attitude to the entire team.

It's not just about individuals but how the individuals fit together as a team with respect to their skills, their attitudes, and the kind of team culture that will result from their presence.

I'm optimistic about returning to prominence with high character, hard working players that will embody all that is good about the star.

I wouldn't call it a "solid" day just yet but I'll agree that the picks were safe and not "sexy."

I seem to recall the Cowboys being most successful when they drafted the best player on their board regadless of need. Doug Cosbie comes to mind.

I really think that in three years there will be a lot of players from the first day of this draft not even in the NFL. All of the picks we made yesterday are solid players physically, off the field, and productivity wise. In about three years I could see all three of our picks as starters or solid contributors on the team.

Good post David. Very good. Something most people are forgetting is we loaded up with picks today doubling from 3 to 6 times we are on the clock. I would like to see us trade up some of those and move into the 4th or 5th round. Kind of hard to see 4 6th and 7th round players making the final 53.

I don't believe Fasano would have been there in the 3rd for us.
The run on TE's almost bit us by trading back like we did we almost missed out on him. You are very correct.
