I've been pretty down on the defense for years, but when I looked at the number of changes on that side of the ball, it made me think I need to exercise a little patience and give them a chance to see if they can develop as the year progresses (as if what I say or think matters)
I posted part of this in another thread but wanted to see if some more discussion could be generated since it kind of got buried elsewhere.
We lost (and I use this word loosely with some obvious players) Canty, Ellis, Roy Williams, Kevin Burnett, Anthony Henry, PacMan, & Tank.
We added Sensabaugh, Keith Brooking, Steve Octavien, Igor Olshansky, Jason Williams, Marvin White
Junior Siavii, Anthony Spencer and Bobby Carpenter look to have increased roles as well.
That's a hell of a lot of turnover on one side of the ball and I don't think I even mentioned everyone, whereas our offense remains almost identical less Owens.
It seems reasonable that the defense will take some time to gel, so my hope is that both sides of the ball work hard and improve each week with both reaching a crescendo in dreaded December and January.
I think our offense has a lower ceiling because they are starting at a higher level and the defense has much room to grow.
Since he's referred to as a defensive "genius", this is his area of expertise and he's the defensive coordinator, I'm hoping Wade can get his guys to perform at a high level before the season is done.
