The Draft and FA has become clear

I would not go a free agent shopping or invest a high pick on a tight end. A franchise quarterback can make do with the weapons we have at hand. If we want to help Dak why not reduce the amount of points he has to score while giving him more possessions. With a better defense and better coaching we should be primed to make a run.

We all see things we need fixed or corrected.

The hiring of McCarthy resets the coaching issues.

But what about what the team needs personnel-wise?

#1-TE

In watching the playoffs it's clear how much the playoff teams used their TEs to defeat the opposing defense.

KC, 49ers, Philly, Titans all had top ranked TEs to fuel the offense against good defenses.

We certainly know firsthand how TEs shredded us and sank our safeties trying to cover them.

Now I like Jarwin. But he is not a force on the field to rely on. He is another of those Garrett projects using TE by Committee.

And if he was all that good, he would have taken snaps from Witten. He could not.

So either Jarwin and Schultz split TE or we sign a FA for the starter and give Jarwin or Schultz the rest of the snaps.

There are several TEs to sign in FA like Ebron that could help us and also possibly in the 2nd rd. Of the draft. Relying on and playing by committee and the numbers to get production is not the best choice I think.

It has not worked before and Moore having to juggle his playcalling to utilize the TEs seems not efficient for Dak.

Finding a solid answer here pays big dividends. Think Jay Novachek, Witten or Jay Saldi types for this need. But find it now.

#2 -Safety and CB

I will not go on about this here. There are many threads to discuss this or go to the Draft forum and see what is being said.

But the point is, it's been 25 years since we had a solid player at either safety and now CB will be a problem going forward.

We tried to address CB with Byron Jones. IMO he never gave us what we needed as he bounced around his 1st 2 years trying each safety position. He was not a great tackler and was not a ball hawk.

So Richard moved him to CB where he found his home but now he is possibly not going to be resigned and Richard is not around to make Jones to be his pet cat.

I would expect Jones to take a regression under the new DC even if he stays. New defensive schemes are coming and Jones has to make some changes in his game.

So needing talent in the secondary is even more important now.

The draft at #17 pick offers our best bet for a quality safety or a CB. I think strength from the middle out is our biggest need on defense and is the key for us in 2020.

But something has to be addressed soon or we are going to be dealing with an aerial bombardment coming like we ain't never seen before.

No amount of offense is going to offset this.

And lastly..

#3 DT/DE

This area of the team is really a haze right now. So many guys coming and going its dizzy right now.

In looking how GB and the 49ers rebuilt their lines defensively so quickly is a good model to emulate. FAs were found who fit their defensive schemes well.

We should be so lucky.

Obviously if a top DL drops to 17, we probably grab him. But whatever, we can not reach for a Gregory type and we have enough rotational types leftover from the Marinelli Era.

So how do you guys prioritize this list of key needs and what is done to fix them?

So other than DE it's every position we've neglected to pay attention to for years.

Just from a numbers standpoint DT and CB are the biggest needs
I think DT needs to be addressed in FA since you may not get a day one starter there in the draft and we need one
CB I think they could try to keep brown or add a FA but then also draft one or two
I think WR is far from a need but the depth in this draft could lead to a WR being picked just because the talent could be good

where this front office has floundered is in free agency and signing capable contributors. You build through the draft and supplement through free agency.

You didn't get the memo?

Free Agents are yucky. We don't like them. Especially the premium ones. I have been told here many times that teams that spend on premium free agents never ever win the Super Bowl.

Never....

I agree but maybe different reasons than you. I figure if you have Cooper, Gallup, Cobb, Pollard, Zeke and possibly Tavon, you as a coordinator should be creative enough to function well without a top TE.
Cobb and Tavon are just bodies should not even be on the list. They are ok at their position.

I think we need TE/DL/Secondary (Cb/S). Grab the best player available in the first 3 rounds in those positions, pending FA.

Cobb is a threat and so is Tavon. If used correctly, they can make an offense very unpredictable. It is all about matchups and confusion and you don't have to have a HOF TE is create that.

Jarwin couldn’t take snaps from Witten? That’s like saying Tiger Woods can’t beat me at golf if I’m holding the pencil and keeping score.

Jarwin was unfairly denied snaps. He did more than Witten with fewer opportunities.

Cobb we should keep.

He had a good year overall with Dak. A few drops I wish he had not.

But just becuz of McCarthy having him at GB and Cobb now knowing Dak and Moore's playcalling..

hope he returns.

Tavon Austin?

I do not think he returns. To me as a gadget guy, he telegraphs the offensive intention too much.

If he is in the game, it's either a jet sweep, reverse or decoy.

I had hoped he would have beefed up PR and KO return with his speed.

But he is not shifty enough nor has he appeared enough on offense to be a regular feature on offense so as to disappear in the routes to get open.

If he is resigned, it should be under those roles to be worth bothering.

I think Jarwin did more because he was not on the defensive radar. Simple view but that is just the way it is with a sub. It is like the Hambrick/Emmitt debate. Maybe he gets the chance to prove me wrong. I hope he does but I think as an option among our many he should suffice!

I saw his flashes.

But what I never saw was his blocking.

Just catching a few passes.

When fans used to complain about Witten not being fast enough anymore..

I would think to myself..

"You try taking 60+ snaps blocking 300 lbs. DEs and 4.6/40 yd dash lbers all game..

Then run downfield 20+ times on long yardage downs and tell me how YOU would feel".

Maybe a little slow..tired?

Sure. So Witten is a has-been?

Hardly.

I'd actually do it in reverse order...3..2..1 of your initial post.
Me too.

Getting more pressure on the QB and beating up the OL should be our top priority. Getting a CB who knows what the football looks like should be #2. TE is important, I agree with the OP, but we're better off with Jarwin than we are Anthony Brown and whoever we have at DT

If you're not going to give me a QB with actual pro talent then the #1 upgrade needed on this roster is DT. Really the whole DL needs an overhaul.
