From 50,000 watts of public airways in the Supreme Truth stratosphere, Air Cowboys America from Farmers Branch, where book learning is OK with us.

Men, gals, esteemed mods, rastafarians and assorted suburban dwellers, there is the lingering question of Greg Ellis.

We have not come to praise him; we have come to bury him, to paraphrase that Grecian guy from Romania in a toga. Well, anyway, as I was saying, this post is not and should not be to cast scones on Ellis, a proud warrior and all-around nice guy. OK, that praising is warranted.

But I am mindful that Ellis said days ago he's not sure if he's ready to fully practice or play. When you have public doubts like that, he aint just jawin', there is something behind that.

Now I wonder how it might play out.

Until Ellis can come back even 80%, would he be, in deference to his years, an "injured starter"?

Would Spencer play most of the game if Ellis could start and play the first two series, perhaps in a way to bring Ellis along slowly to fuller rehab?

Would Wade and Jerra, intoxicated by the promise and dazzle of Spencer, ascede to the fans' thirst for a lion of a STARTER player on defense opposite Ware?

Or, would the worst scenario come about?
Ellis announces retirement when he gets word he will be cut?

I base these questions on the expectation that Ellis' injury will delay him.
A lot.
Something's gotta give. This next exhib . . . i mean preseason game, will tell a lot?

Ya think?

The simple answer is this:

Ellis is playing us.

He knows he can't play elsewhere.

He is pretty sure he isn't able to play well enough to see the field.

He can't retire because he doesn't want to walk away from the money for this season.

So I think he's trying to force them to put him on IR. He gets to heal, he gets paid, he doesn't lose face.

Very nice. Machiavelli would be proud !

Ironicly this is the same Ellis that wanted a RAISE.

Or maybe he is not recovered from a very serious injury. Ellis is a go guy to me, if he was healthy he is out there. Not all recover fast and 100% from that injury.

This is how I see it. I don't see Ellis as the kind of guy who doesn't want to play.

Its also entirely possible that he knows its preseason and that his job is going to be there. Its not as if Spencer is playing llight out or anything.

According to the media, Ellis is working his butt off on the sidelines doing everything the trainers want him to do. He's not sitting home complaining that he's not well, can't play, etc. Ellis has been a warrior in the past & that hasn't changed. He already knows the Cowboys won't cut him & there's no way he wants to be put on IR just to ensure he gets paid.

We all hoped/were lead to believe Ellis would be ready for TC. He worked hard but, as many tell us, an achilles injury takes a yr to come back from & it's only been 9 months. It's now time to be realistic re the time frame. Doubt he'll be ready for the Giant game which only about 2 weeks away. More likely it will be the Chicago game before there's a chance he can help us. Even if it is later then that until he can really play/help us, that's a whole lot better then anybody else out there who can do the job.

So let's cool it for a while and give him at least another month before you get your jock strapes twisted.

I don't think that is the case. I think it is more like this:

Ellis is a worrywort.

He is concerned about tearing it again - as well he should be, this is not an 8-9 mth recovery injury.

He now realizes this and he is scared - knows if he comes back early and reinjures his career is over.

He is not going to " take another one for the team" like he feels he did before - whether that is true or not.

They need to put him on PUP

I expect Ellis to practice the week before the Giants game and to start that game. He won't be as good as he will later get, but he will do until Spencer is ready to take over (which won't be long, IMO).

Right now, Ellis is not at a critical point where he has to bite the bullet. But when he gets to that point, he'll do what's necessary, as always.

So do you think that Ellis at 70-80% is better than Spencer/Carpentar at 100%?

I don't..........ellis has never been an elite player. He has never had more than 8 sacks in a year. Sure he has led the team in sacks since he got here, but we have always had a bad pass rushing team. He was just average before his devastating injury, and I doubt he ever gets back to that level.

I really wish he could make it back to his old self, but realistically, that will not happen.

No, I think Spencer will far surpass anything Ellis has ever done or could do, but he has much to learn still. Having Ellis to take the lead in the first real game -- at its much faster pace -- will allow Spencer to acclimate himself to it without making avoidable mistakes early on.

Therein lies the problem can Ellis handle the faster pace coming off the injury? He was in pain after some drills once he hits live action he is going to be dealing with some big lineman who are going to really test that achillies and how much burst off the ball can we expect from Greg this year? Myself I do like the guy but I have a bad feeling about him being able to return and I just hope the Cowboys can get him back on the field to see what he is able to do before we hit the reg season.

You are correct. He does want to play.
But he can't.
Therein lies the difficulty with which he is faced.
I think his ego will play a big part in whatever he does.
My guess is he won't stand to be benched. What comes after that is a crap shoot.

I do think Ellis -- like countless other veterans -- has learned how to work the system. Nurse an injury until camp is over, then start. Or hold out over salary untill camp is over, then play.
In Ellis' case, we hear he is ready and that he is not ready.
I do believe there is a tremendous psychological barrier in fully testing his foot/ankle/lower leg, and he wants to buy time to let it heal. Whether the Cowboys and he are on the same timetable remains to be seen.

Wow. I really hope that isn't the case. Spencer in a rotation is better for the Boys than Spencer manning the OLB w/ spot duty from LB Hybrid - Carp.
