I like to think of myself as one who does not jump to extremes with this team, and I’d like to believe I'm as objective as possible with my team. I said before the game that this would be a tough game to play, and it was. I said if Dallas played to their abilities and minimized mistakes they’d win by 14. They did neither and therefore lost by double-digits.
However we’re still 6-3 and still top of our division. Our defense played well the majority of the game, but it was hard to overcome the loss of Jenkins and Hamlin in the game on defense, and Columbo on the line.
As always, after a loss, people get blamed. That’s fine, but to blame the coaches for this loss is wrong in my opinion. The players did not make plays, plain and simple. Several players also made several mistakes today that had very little if anything to do with coaching.
Missed execution lost us this game, and to me it’s blatantly obvious. From Romo missing throws (Austin on the first drive) to kickers missing FG’s, to penalties extending drives (Jenkins hold), to penalties killing drives (Witten pick) to dropped balls, to missed assignments (Flo) to fumbles, we once again made tons of mistakes and very little of that has to do with coaching.
Some of you want to point out that Garrett abandoned the run. It would seem so simply looking at the stats, however that is not the case at all. We could not get off the field on defense, allowing GB to control the clock, and when we couldn’t stay on the field on 3rd down whether it was a run or a pass. For those with an Anti-Garrett agenda, put it down for a second, think back to the actual game, not the stats, and you’ll see there is no argument for this. (I have more details here)Going into the 4th quarter we were doubled up in TOP at 30 min for GB and 15 for us. Hard to run in the 4th quarter down ten in those circumstances.
Coaching often gets blamed because it’s the easiest thing for fans to do after a loss. The coaching was fine this game. Our players performance was not.
Injuries also played a huge factor. We likely lost Columbo for the rest of the regular season, and then lost Jenkins and Hamlin, which no doubt played a huge factor in our abilities on defense. Alan Ball is no Mike Jenkins, and Pat Watkins is no Ken Hamlin (and I don’t think too highly of Hamlin)
I did like how Roy was much more involved, and open several times which means as teams are focusing on stopping Miles (the last two games he's been quiet) Roy is getting opportunities. He must take advantage of them however.
I'd like to see more from Felix, although there wasn't many opportunities for him today...then again that has never mattered for him in the past.
Defense played well for the majority of the game, but no forced turnovers really hurt us. I think if we had even gotten one turnover that we win this game. But not today.
I didn’t think we’d lose this game, but I didn’t think we’d win it either. I had no idea what to think, because of this exact reason. This team is inconsistent and we never know what performance we’re going to get out of them, week in and week out. And it was like that under Parcells too, along with the penalties, so don’t blame the staff for that.
I'm not supporting the fact that our coaching was perfect however, as I'm sure they made mistakes just like the players...but in my opinion the performance of the players had a MUCH bigger impact on the outcome than the coaching did. Plays were there to be made, and were not.
But we’re 6-3, still leading the division, and have Washington next. They’re coming off a big win and they ALWAYS play us tough. Even in 07 when we were as hot as can be, they almost beat us. It will be a tough game for sure, but as long as the right Dallas team shows up, we can win that and be 7-3. However the mistake ridden Cowboys can show up as well, and if that happens we very well may be sitting at 6-4 and with a tough December schedule, the playoffs could be tough to reach.
But, once again, if we play to our abilities and minimize mistakes, we can beat any team in this league. It's just a crapshoot as to whether this team does that or not.
