On this date in 1960 the Dallas Cowboys began in earnest. The Cowboys did not get to Draft any players in 1960. They are the only expansion team in NFL History not to get to build through the Draft their first year in the League.

In fact, the Cowboys didn't really exist at all yet. You see when Clint Murchison and Bedford Wynn were first granted a franchise Bedford Wynn, a Texas Longhorn Alumni wanted the team to be the Steers. Tex Schramm quickly surmised that the team would be associated with castration and changed the mascot to the Rangers.

Later they would change again to Cowboys.

In those days the Draft was not held in April. The 1960 NFL Draft was held on November 30, 1959. Then on January 28, 1960 the NFL awarded franchises to the Dallas Rangers and the Minnesota Vikings. So it was too late for them to Draft for the 1960 season.

Now you might be asking why I said Dallas is the only expansion franchise not to get to Draft if Minnesota was added at the same time. The Vikings did not start playing in 1960. They began in 1961. So by then they held the 1961 Draft on December 27 & 28, 1960. Thus the Vikings got to start as all other NFL expansion teams do, with a Draft.

So how did the Cowboys come to have a team in 1960? Well, they were the 13th team in the NFL. The NFL granted the other 12 teams the right to freeze 25 players that the Cowboys could not touch. Then the rest of the players were opened up to the Cowboys to take, but they could only take 3 players from each team.

The list of available players was provided to the Rangers on March 12, 1960. They were given 24 hours to decide who they were going to take and on this date in 1960 they selected 36 players to build the very first team in franchise History.

Not everyone was excited to be coming to an expansion team. Most of the players left available were over 30. Some of them retired rather than report to the new team. Tex and Tom expected this and tried to choose guys who were native Texans whenever they could.

The rest of the team would be Undrafted Free Agents, Free Agent pickups after they were cut from another team, or trades. The makings of the team began on this date in History. In alphabetical order here are the 1960 Dallas Cowboys, position(s), where they came from, and how long they were on the team.

Besides not getting to draft that year we were also competing with the newly formed AFL for free agents so the pickings were even fewer!

Some of those guy we took in the expansion draft or signed that first year turned out to be good players for us:

Don Meredith
Eddie LeBaron
Frank Clarke
Don Bishop
Jerry Tubbs
Mike Connelly
Jack Patera
Don Fry
Billy Howton

... But most didn't last more than a year or two.

Even when we did get to draft in 1961 we had to trade for picks to replace the ones we traded away for LeBaron, Meredith, and others. Then we were still competing with the AFL for players and a couple of very good players decided to play for the AFL team that drafted them instead of us. OG Billy Shaw, OT Stew Barber, and C/LB E.J Holub were taken in our first draft but played in the AFL instead. That really hurt us! Shaw is in the HoF and both Barber and Holub were 5-time Pro-Bowlers.

We did get Bob Lilly in that draft with our very first pick ever!

Here's something to make you wonder how fans today would act. In 1961 the Cowboys had 20 Draft picks. That's right, 20.

Only 4 of them ever played for the Cowboys.

Man! Landry & Co can't draft worth squat! :D

Do you know what we traded away for LeBaron, Meredith, Perkins and others? I know we gave up our 1st rounder and traded away future picks to get the one we took Lilly with but I don't remember what they were.

There was a site out there with some of that info on it but I don't remember what it was.

Don Meredith was drafted in the 3rd round of the 1960 NFL draft and George Halas traded him to the Cowboys for draft picks in future Drafts.

Perkins signed with the Cowboys after the Colts drafted him in the 9th round in 1960 as what was then called a "Future's Pick." In those days you could draft for the future. The Colts did that for Perkins who was a Senior at New Mexico in 1960 and wouldn't play in the NFL until 1961, so the Colts got compensation. Not sure what it was.

Eddie LeBaron was one of the players Dallas took from the Commanders that they did not protect.

We had to trade our first round pick in 1961 to Washington for the rights to LeBaron. That was the 2nd pick in the draft and they took QB Norm Snead with it. We traded our first round pick in 1962 to the Browns for theirs in 1961 (#13) and took Bob Lilly with it (not sure what else we gave up for it).

I knew we gave up something to get Meredith from the Bears but I couldn't find out what it was... yet.

Still looking on Perkins as well...

According to the "Commanders Encyclopedia" we also gave up DT Ray Krouse along with our 1st round pick in 1961 to the Commanders for the rights to Eddie LeBaron. Krouse was selected in the expansion draft from the Colts and had been a standout player for the Giants in the 50s but only played one season with the Commanders.

Interesting info. E.J. Holub is Jeff Ireland's grandfather, btw.

Actually Ireland is Holub's step son. He is the grand son of former Eagle Jim Parmer.

Thanks for the history Hos.

I'm not personally well informed when it comes to the history of the cowboys, so i always appriciate your 'historical' posts. I get to learn a lot from them.

The owner and company would be run out of town by people with torches and pitch forks over how stupid and pathetic they are.

It would actually be an almost hilarious scene to see these forums if we had a draft like that. lol

You are correct. I posted earlier in this thread that we traded our 1961 1st rounder and DT Ray Krouse who we picked up in the expansion draft from the Colts for Eddie LeBaron.

The draft pick was the #2 pick in the '61 draft and the Commanders selected QB Norm Snead with it.

We traded our 1st rounder in 1962 to the Browns for their 1961 1st (#13) and selected Bob Lilly with it.
