The Giants are not a better team than we are

I still can't figure out why Pugh was ranked as a 1st rounder. He was completely dominated at OT in the Senior Bowl by Bears 6th round pick Cornelius Washington.

He wasn't, was he? Sure he was taken as a first rounder, but I thought it was a reach pick just like Fred and us. I guess the Giants still have to get their feet wet in terms of picking non D-Ends in the first round.

LOL, they haven't particularly hit on non-DL first rounders, have they?

Pugh is a pretty nice player, IMO, but I saw him as someone I'd take in round 2... not round 1. I don't like him as much as I do Frederick who has smarts, size and strength that stands out, whereas Pugh is more of a well rounded guy who doesn't really have any special qualities besides smarts. I like that Frederick will anchor the interior of the line and not many will be able to push him back. With Pugh, I would still worry about the interior collapsing.

I never viewed him as a first rounder and was scratching my head when I saw some predictions.

It's funny you mention that, it's actually quite the opposite of what you'd think. Their 3 previous tries to draft a DL in the first round did not result in what you could call great or possibly even good picks.

They managed to nab JPP, but they've also had success in the first round recently with Kenny Phillips, Hakeem Nicks, and Prince Amukamura.

Also, since Jerry Reese took over as THE guy, outside of JPP they haven't drafted DL well in any round. Maybe that will change this year with Moore and Hankins.

They have the better coach...
...and for that reason I think the tips scale in their favor

I'll tell you guys...Hos would be a better coach than Garret...
Give Jerry and this team Hos and I think the Cowboys are by far the better team...

Kenny Phillips really hasn't impressed me very much, and neither has Amukamara. Nicks is a good player though (when healthy) and is really the only one I thought of when I wrote that. However, one good player wasn't enough for me to change my opinion that they've not drafted well in round 1 recently outside of DL (and as you mentioned, they've not really hit on that much)

Phillips and Amukamara are ok players, I just don't think I would consider them "hits" in the first round. You might feel that they are, but I don't, although Amukamara still has time to change my mind.

Something else you might disagree with is that I'm not all that sold on Reese as a talent evaluator.

I know this sounds bitter, but I truly believe that NY is in for a rough season this year. It took us 4 interceptions, 1 stupid fumble by Felix Jones, a rare turnover on special teams, bad play clock management from the headcoach, and a fingertip call for them to win this game. I know this sounds redundant, but I was rewatching the replay of this game. I was amazed just how stupid our team was in this game and yet we still should have won. If we can play smart, clean football we can win on opening night.

LOL those are a lot of things you listed. .Guess what...All things that bad teams do...I know its impossible for people to admit, but the Cowboys are an average football team and there are teams that actually better than us :) Every year, every game its the same ol excuse.. If this, this and this happened we would have won or we would have went 13-3.........Every season its the same thing.. This team is what it is....AVERAGE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Phillips was actually a really good player, he just couldn't stay healthy. And Amukamara is kind of going through the same thing. He was easily the best cover corner in the division last year, but he didn't have the impact that Carr did with game changing interceptions.

He's probably okay at evaluating talent, but at the same time I don't think he's this top 5 GM like most claim him to be. I'm on the fence about Reese as a talent evaluator... or rather a GM. The two super bowls can largely be attributed to the groundwork laid by Ernie Accorsi. However, to be fair, Reese was like Accorsi's right hand man, so the role Reese played in the acquisitions of Tuck, Osi, and Eli could have been huge. I think overall he's been a bit lucky with some of his hits and a bit dumb with some of his decisions as well... seriously, his last two 1st rounders are questionable choices. A RB in the first round and reaching even harder than we did on an OL this year. He will forever be hyped for his 2007 draft class though.

I have to give the Giants an edge overall in talent acquisition but I could easily argue the opposite. There's not a lot of difference in the two. I would make a small wager we are better this year but not a big one. I still think we go 10-6 this year and win the division.

It's a tough call. For the most part the Giants have drafted better over the last 15 years, but I think Dallas has done a better job of stocking up talent than New York the last 3 drafts.

Drafting Since 2010:

Dallas: Dez, Lee, Smith, Murray, Carter, Claiborne, and to an extent Harris because he solves a need for a returner.

New York: Pierre Paul, Amukamura, Jospeh, and I guess I could include David Wilson (although I don't see what's so special with him).

I keep wondering why our fans have to compare The Boys to other teams over and over... Maybe the Giants aren't as good as us, they definitely weren't the year we went 13-3, the same year the Giants won the first of their last two superbowls, but the games are decided on the field and whether they are better hasn't really made a difference as we have split even when we were clearly the better team. The one thing I take from this is that they have been better more often than not when they needed to be, and that is more important than being the better team on paper. But with all my rooting for the Cowboys might I hope this years team goes out and kicks fire out of everyone's behind this year!
