It's clear most of us are excited that Dan Reeves will be joining the Cowboys' staff. We've all stated the obvious for liking the imminent hire: his toughness; expertise; credibility; commanded-respect; and oh yeah, those 9 Super Bowl rings he has earned (edit: 9 Super Bowl appearances) as a player assistant and head coach throughout his NFL career.
We all like how he can help Phillips and Jones run the franchise and how he can help Garrett get the offense back on track. But more than that, he can offer Wade Phillips (or Jones) the ability to strip Garrett of his play calling duties and hand them over to Reeves if Garrett comes back in 2009 with a sub-par performance similar to 2008's.
You see, in 2008, Phillips was there in waiting to take over for Brian Stewart, and that actually worked quite well. But there was no one really in line who commanded similar respect on the offensive side of the ball, so everyone was just left to "live with" the Tecmo-Bowl that Garrett ridiculously had to offer.
But not any more: I think the hidden benefit is that this imminent hire puts Garrett on notice. And that's a good thing. While I am one of the posters here hardest on him, I do also understand that he has a chance to improve with the right guidance. But to bring the best out of him, he needs to be pushed, just like veteran starting players play best when there's someone else waiting in the wings to take their job if they don't.
I also think it puts the offensive players on notice too, because they no longer have the luxury to use Garrett's expertise - or lack thereof - as an excuse for their play; because if they do there's another bigger Dog behind Garrett protecting and guiding his every move and no longer letting the players kick their favorite offensive poodle.
So all in all, this is the reason why I LOVE this imminent hire.
And to Mr. Jason Garrett, I can tell you that I think you still got a chance to succeed, but just remember, plan-B is in-waiting because we don’t the luxury of time for you to figure your path out, especially when Dan Reeves has already done that and the time to win is NOW.
