Helps make up for SF trading in front of us to take Joe Montana.

Do you mean Jerry Rice?

Cleveland has top 10 picks every year. They don't get better. It isn't just about luck. You have to do things to capitalize on the good luck and not let the bad luck overwhelm you. You can't let a poor season turn into 3.

Dallas would still be winning if Romo were QBs so they have put together a good team for this season. Perhaps Dallas didn't fully know how good Dak could be or how quickly, but they did know something. They obviously liked him enough to draft him and then not make a panic move to trade for another QB after Romo got injured.

The team truly did like Dak and Wilson loved his intangibles (which is IMO what makes him special). So it wasn't a throw away pick and they did target him (albeit after trying for other's first).
Yep, that's what the draft board is for. We got rewarded for having him higher on ours than anybody else did. There were 36 picks in the 4th round before we picked Dak.

All excellent points,,, and who's to say that some of the other QBs or RBs wouldn't be finding success here as well? The team's focus and success in fixing the OL cannot be overestimated.

Every team has a trial of almosts and whoopses. There's nothing particularly interesting in ours. The important thing is we're playing the odds properly, developing players, and we got lucky at QB2. All during a time when many of us thought we were doing the exact opposite. It's fun, right?
I thought that with Romo's window about to close, drafting for the future was a mistake. Shows what I know.

If preseason were only 2 weeks (as Goodell would like it to be), there wouldn't have been enough time to evaluate Dak, and we almost certainly would have traded for another QB.

It is crazy, especially if you think how Dak is the starter:

1. They like Wentz, but don't offer enough to deal with the Browns and so the Eagles do
2. They don't make the deal with Seattle to move up to get Paxton Lynch
3. Oakland jumps them in round 4 and they draft Connor Cook, who was next Dallas target
4. Cowboys like Dak and since they did not get other 3, they draft him with compensatory 4th round pick, hoping they can develop him at some point
5. Backup QB Kellen Moore breaks leg in camp
6. Cowboys want to deal for Josh McCown, but Browns want too much
7. Rams release Nick Foles. He meets with Cowboys, then Chief,s and signs with Chiefs
8. Cowboys informally elevate Dak to back up, based on preseason play
9. Romo goes down in preseason game, lost until mid-season
10. Dak becomes starter and maybe does not look back.
Can't remember. Was the foles non signing before or after the preseason started?

I believe the OP is well taken. How many times have we seen it mentioned here in the past that it would take a series of fortunate events for this team to overcome its problems and seriously compete for postseason glory? I think we should all be thankful for the series of events that have led to the resurgence that this team currently enjoys. Kudos to Will McClay and the good fortune that was to follow. Let's just hope this team's future decision making, improved coaching and extremely good fortune finds a way to sustain ongoing success. It may find this Thanksgiving well timed.

What about gurley, do you think he is a bust ? He was a highly touted first rd pick.
I don't think Gurley has the instincts that EE has, and I know he doesn't have the OL that EZE has either (which is part of thinking if he will bust or not)... but no, I don't think Gurley is a bust.

I wasn't as sure about Gurley as I was about Elliott.

I figured that the hypothetical of him being healthy was a given.

Yeah, that's the issue. No way to know how long he will be healthy. But if he was no reason to think he wouldn't be tearing it up as well.

Mistakes & injuries are punished during the season then rewarded at the draft.
