The issue with the defense is the lack of quality fa's!

When the team lost Lve to retirement, Overshown went down for the season the 1st time, they were forced to play an undrafted rookie fa safety at linebacker. That experiment was exposed badly against the Packers in the playoffs.

The following year that sign an over the hill fa LB in Kendricks, who is now enjoying his retirement. Just use a 3rd rd pick at LB-Marist.

-This yr they sign a minimum fa deal on Sanborn for him to start at the MLB position. They trade for Murray who two teams already have given up on in as many years.

-This franchise is run like an NBA team that pays three stars. Fills out the roster with veteran, minimum players.
Ironically that season with Bell was the best LB play we’ve had in the last 3 seasons.
Put him back, can’t be any worse than Murray.

Ferguson didn't have his breakout year yet - he was a nobody when Schoon was unfortunately drafted. They were overreaching to replace Dak's buddy Schultz, who got too expensive and left as a FA. We had nobody at TE then, and they panicked.
Drafting Schoon in the second when they had Ferguson was so dumb, nobody knew why they did it.
I just remember everyone thinking we shouldn’t have drafted him or a TE there. Turns out that was correct….dude has been a wasted pick for sure.

Don’t forget the most expensive free agent signing in ten years.

Dante Fowler - $8m

Yep. We will do anything to win. Including sit on $40m in free cap space.

Ya that's what their approach is. I think they divided the rebuild job
Into several years. I know that's not your point but they as usual aren't paying big bucks in free agency and they planned two throw away years. I don't see another answer.
What is maddening to me is the Eberflus background is a former linebacker coach. He brought in a former player of his that has been awful, he ok'd a trade for Murray who has been bad in 2 stops in as many years. He could of demanded a linebacker be taken high in the draft, but all they get is a 5th rd green 20 year old prospect.

When your front office doesnt realize that free agency is apart of team building thats where the problem starts
Look at the starters who they signed on defense

Elam
Wilson
Murray
Flowers

Now include all the misses in the last 3 drafts. Whomever is currently evaluating talent shouldn't be part of any rebuilding.

We have 7 players on our D who would not start for any other NFL team, but it's not a lack of talent? Howso?
It's a combination. This was a bad defense last year and all we did in the offseason was add a few JAGs and loose Micah. This was never going to be a good defense. But to be this bad was not expected.

Add in 7+mil for Murray.

Posters talk about the ability to sign/trade for players that Parsons deal would of prevented, until you realize this FO is clueless most of the time.
Yea, sure, Murray and Fowler are 1 year deals, but that's 15mil spent on backups/JAGs. Rather see that 15mil as rollover than the play we've seen. lol

lack of quality FAs and lack of quality draft picks. cowboys became gun shy after Mazi pick. and instead of drafting a defensive player we needed like a LB, perhaps even a few spots earlier than rated, they went for a GUARD!!!!! drafting a guard in the top 12 is a luxuary, not a necessasity for any team, but they didn't trust themselves. it was the stupidest pick!!!
Made zero sense to take a Guard that high. A pick in that range should of been an impact defender.

He's a role player who piggybacks off playing next to elite teammates. We see what happens when he's asked to be a main dawg......

All the talent in the world can overcome bad coaching, a flawed scheme, and putting the right player in a position of strength. Pacell mastered this.......as a matter of fact, look at the struggling Eagles offense. Loaded with talent at every position, but is struggling big-time. Despite missing his starting QB and top WR, Shanahan has the 49ers offense clicking.
It takes both, coaching and talent. Neither is worth a durn w/o the other.

Injured players is a part of the league.
That's obvious, but drafting players who are known to be injury prone is a huge part of our problem.

We are all built differently, and some people are going to be more prone to getting hurt than others. Overshown, for example, has never been able to stay on the field, going back to his college days.

There’s no One singular problem wrong with this defense lol

Built is too positive of a word for what Jethro has assembled.

Yeah. I expected some dropoff, but what we got was a total collapse!!
