Felix, Pacman on Kickoffs; Waiting On Newman

Cowboys head coach Wade Phillips wants to wait until after Friday’s practice to make a decision on Terence Newman’s status for the game.
The cornerback has been limited with that groin injury he suffered the first week of camp. We all thought it was just precautionary for him to miss so much time in the preseason. But apparently, this injury is either worse than expected, or he suffered a setback, or maybe the Cowboys are sending smoke screens.
Either way, Phillips said during Friday’s press conference that he hasn’t decided if Newman will even play against the Browns, much less start.
Here are some other points of Phillips’ press conference on Friday:
·There is a chance the Cowboys will call up a wide receiver from the practice squad. Look for Mike Jefferson to have the edge over Danny Amendola. To do that, obviously the Cowboys will have to release a player. With the Cowboys having both 11 defensive backs and 11 offensive linemen on the roster, those would be the ideal positions to trim.
·Phillips also said Felix Jones and Pacman Jones will both handle kickoff returns this week in Cleveland. Phillips said he could use both players together at one time, or rotate the two, and likely have another off-returner, such as Orlando Scandrick or maybe Isaiah Stanback.
·With Stanback just getting back from the shoulder injury, it’s not likely he will play on special teams on the coverage units. Typically, the backup receivers will have that role but with Miles Austin and Sam Hurd out, and Stanback banged up, the Cowboys will have to rely on other areas, unless they sign a receiver from the practice squad. Still, look for more defensive backs to be active this game.
