What teams do we have to watch for in respects to getting Lawson as a OLB.
Oakland-(6th pick)The need an OLB but at the 7th pick do they pull the trigger on Lawson?? Anthing is possible with Al Davis and crew.
Cleveland-(12th pick)This one scare's the hell out of me. They run a 3-4 defense and I see Crennel looking at Lawson real hard.
Green Bay-(5th pick)Again I see them to far up in the draft and I see Hawk landing in this spot.
Miami-(16th pick)Saban uses the 3-4 scheme and Lawson would fit in nicely but the addition of Channing Crowder last year makes OLB less of a priority.
Minnesota-this is another scary team for drafting Lawson. RB is another logical choice at this spot. They pick 17th too.
I've done it again...every year I fixate on one player who I think would fit perfectly on the team.
Last year it was Merriman-I like Ware but everyone was on the Merriman bandwagon prior to the draft. Not dissapointed in how it played out.
Roy Williams-We got this one and I have not been dissapointed.
Terence Newman-Ditto.
Stephen Jackson-was seen as the top rb in a weak rb class...we had him and then traded down and got Julius...again not dissapointed.
This year it's Lawson.

Cleveland and Miami will be the ones interested, but Wimbley will be a possibility too. They will have a lot of positions to choose from at their picks also. Can't see Oakland, Minnesota, or GB having Lawson that high on their board, he is too light for end in a 4-3 and they won't be looking at him as a 4-3 LB. There are too many other LBs that are better fits for a 4-3 that will be available.

I think it depends alot on Ngata as well. If Ngata falls to Cleveland, then I think he makes it to 18.

I'm thinking we take an OLB w/ our 18th. My top 3 OLBs that I want to see one w/ a star on their helmet after our pick are:
1. Manny Lawson
2. Kamerion Wimbley
3. Bobby Carpenter

I think we'll be fine even if Lawson is gone by the 18th pick because the other two should still be available.....

agreed. I think Miami, Clevland and us are all looking at defense with the 1st pick. Ngata is the trump card here because he is a perfect 3-4 type NT. Clevland could go for him to anchor hte middle for them (the money we spent on Ferguson shows you the importance of the NT in the 3-4).

Carpenter

Height: 6-2 1/2 | Weight: 256 | 40-Time: 4.66

Strengths:
Has excellent size...Is very fast and athletic...Has great instincts...Is very natural and does an excellent job in coverage...Does a nice job of filling against the run...Flies to the ball and makes plays sideline-to-sideline...Tremendous pass rusher and blitzer...Tough as nails and a true football player...Tenacious and has a great motor...Versatile player...Very productive and has a lot of experience.

Weaknesses:
Has some trouble shedding blocks...Is not the surest tackler...Was surrounded by a lot of talent which alleviated pressure and didn't allow the opposition to focus only on him...Can be too aggressive at times...Might not be quite as athletic as his computer numbers would lead you to believe...Needs to use his hands better.

Notes:
Father Rob played for the New York Giants...Saw some action at defensive end for the Buckeyes...Was overshadowed by A.J. Hawk but this guy is a top prospect in his own right...A great strongside linebacker who could also be an impact player in a 3-4 pass rushing role as well...One of the drafts most underrated players.

Kamrion Wimbley

Strengths...Tremendous natural athlete...Fast and very quick with a burst...Can wreak havoc rushing the passer off the edge...Does an excellent job in pursuit and can close on the ball...Changes direction well...Very productive and stood out on a talented defense...Team player with top intangibles...Is also an excellent special teams prospect...Still has a lot of upside and hasn't reached his full potential.

Weaknesses...Undersized and lacks bulk...Needs to hit the weight room and get stronger...May have to change positions at the next level...Does not hold up at the point of attack...A liability against the run...Struggles to shed blockers...Is basically a one trick pony who relies solely on speed...Needs to work on technique and make better use of his hands...Might only be a situational player in the pro ranks.

Notes... Could be a 3-4 outside linebacker...Entered college at only 210 lbs, so he has done a good job of adding weight and has the frame to get bigger still...A classic 'tweener who a team will need to find the right role for...At the very least he should excell as a situational pass rusher and copuld easily be a lot more.

Lawson has pretty much the same bio as Wimbley. So why would we take a guy that is an undersized DE and convert him on the side that is predomainately a run stopper?

Carpenter is the guy.

Ladies and gentlemen, that cold sensation under your feet is hell freezing over.

TD3 and I agree on something, a truly rare occurance.

The dude can't be wrong all the time.

I like Lawson's athleticism, but our defense needs a Carpenter. Carpenter fits us better then any other prospect (OLB) in the draft.

Except for AJ Hawk of course, but we won't have a chance at him.

If all we needed was a run stopper we could get by with Singleton and some other patchwork free agents. Since we need more than a run stopper we're drafting a young QB hungry stud in the first.

Because Demarcus Ware can be moved to the strong side. The Cowboys asked him to get up to 260 for a reason. If Lawson is there at 18, he will be moved to the weak side. He is even faster than Ware and would be a better option at that side. Ware on one edge and Lawson on the either would confuse opposing offenses. If Miami can sign Arrington than Lawson will definitley make it to 18. Cleveland will take either Bunkly or Ngata.

I would prefer to see us take Lawson, but...I really don't think he'll even still be there by 18, I really would be quite surprised if he's still there at 18. Ideally, if Parcells can find a team who wants to trade up into our current spot at 18, I see us dropping down somewhere in the low to mid-20 range in order to pick up extra picks. I think we'll take a LB and it may well be Carpenter.

Carpenter will be learning the 3-4 defense but sounds like a better fit at SOLB with Ware staying on the weak side. I think the OLB talk is a bit academic because the Cowboys are going to draft an OT.

I think the Giants would have interest in Carpenter as well if we trade down too far.

Whoever we get neither is going to stay at S or WOLB. They're going to switch so much that the distinction will be minimal.

Dolphins | Team looking closely at Lawson
Mon, 10 Apr 2006 06:32:33 -0700

Steve Doerschuk, of the Canton Repository, reports the Miami Dolphins are looking closely at North Carolina State DE/LB Manny Lawson as one candidate for their first-round pick in the upcoming NFL Draft.

Browns | Team has Lawson on their NFL Draft list
Mon, 10 Apr 2006 06:28:17 -0700

Steve Doerschuk, of the Canton Repository, reports the Cleveland Browns have North Carolina State DE/LB Manny Lawson on their NFL Draft list. Lawson is seen as a late first-round type, but teams are antsy about missing the next breakout front-seven player. Lawson has been compared LB Willie McGinest, 34, who says he would gladly mentor a young protégé. Lawson thinks he can bulk up and play end in a 4-3 or rush and drop into pass coverage as a 3-4 linebacker.

I like Lawson but he's a guy who could go higher or much lower. I wouldn't be shocked if he went 10-15 or if he lasted into the early 2nd. LB's tend to drop on draft day. This year that might be the case since there is a relatively deep crop and most teams might look to get someone later in day 1.

Me, I'm hoping Greenway drops to us.

People (Namely TwoDeep & Rack),

I understand your logic for wanting Bobby Carpenter. I certainly will not drop a tear if the Cowboys take him.

However, at 255, I see him being moved inside. Now that the Cowboys have already acquired Akin Ayodele, and Bradie James had a breakout season in 2005, does the priority for acquiring Carpenter drop?

I think it going to be Lawson or Wimberly.

I think Carp would fit well at OLB and would have the starting job there by week 3 or 4.

I like Greenway too. I think you and I are the only ones on this site that do. :laugh2:
