The lost optimism of keeping or firing Garrett

I wanted Sean Payton as our head coach back when he was an assistant here. In fact, I was the only one pushing for it back then and that was long before he went to the Saints and had success. Sean just got a new contract extension though so I doubt he's going anywhere.

If Payton didn't have Brees, he'd be Garrett without Romo.

I remember a huge GROZ (get rid of Zimmer) contingent around here for a long time. Just goes to show you the stupidity of the average fan and a mob mentality.

Zimmer needed to go and has yet to prove anything outside of Dallas except making the playoffs last year.

Even still he has yet to win 1 playoff game since being removed from Dallas.

Sure. But that's Garret's fault?

And one thing you notice among all those teams? Superstar defensive talent. You're alos cherry picking the franchises that have broken through and not those who have languished with us in mediocrity.

At the end of the day, we have a middling head coach paired with a front office who has had more than half a decade to build a winning defense and can't seem to figure out how to do it.

But Payton has and has had Payton and a SB ring. Garrett has and has had Romo, and has a .500 record.

I guarantee had Payton talked Jerry into letting him take Romo with him to New Orleans, Romo would have a ring by now.

What I have always found funny about "Fire <insert-current-head-coach-here>!" threads over the years for every single coach we have had since Jimmy Johnson is that in one breath, fans will loudly rail against Jerry Jones' ability to make good decisions pointing to <insert-current-head-coach-here> as the prime example, and then in the next breath expect that same Jerry Jones would be capable of hiring the perfect coach to replace him.

What if Jerry fired Garrett and then hired Linehan or Marinelli? They both have previous head coaching experience. What if Jerry hired some unproven coordinator from another team that may only have had success because he had several superstar players to work with on his last team?

Like many fans, I have seen nothing from Garrett to prove he's capable of reaching or winning Super Bowls so this is not a "keep Garrett" agenda post. I believe coaches are paid a lot of money to win and if they don't, they should get fired and replaced.

I just don't share the same optimism that I guess many of you do that if Garrett is fired, everything will suddenly be better. Instead, I fear that if he's fired, we'll get some replacement that "can work and get a long with Jerry" and at minimum we'll have to endure at least 3-4 more years of mediocrity, or even worse, wishing we still had Garrett "because at least he had one good season".

It's easy to say, "it can't get much worse", but to that I simply say one word .. "Campo."

And what if Juicy Fruit were not sold over the counter, but given away freely?

I am just trolling you partner!! No harm intended!;)

lol, I know. :) Thing is, I'm excited about Dak as the future, but Romo is still better at this point. I'm curious if Romo has learned anything from Dak and we'll see a slightly different game from him when he returns. He's shown in the past that he's adaptable and willing to change his game if he thinks he can improve on it. Dak seems to have the same qualities. It's an exciting time!

Of course Tony is the better man. The only question is how will he perform after so much time off. Will he be afraid of getting injured again and not be aggressive enough. Many questions about Tony's physical ability to get all the way back. When and If he can come back it is certainly his team and he deserves that. Prescott would be the first to say it.

I have no fear of Tony not being aggressive. The dude's a born competitor. I just wish he'd occasionally throw the ball away.

That's been my argument for a long time. We say, "Garrett has to go," but then think that the guy who hired him will hire someone not only better, but significantly better, and then get out of the way and let him do his job. The whole "it couldn't be any worse" is flawed in two ways. One, it could always be worse. Two, we don't want "couldn't be worse." We want better - much better. The only name out there that would excite me would be Sean Payton, although he's been involved in a couple of major scandals, and I doubt he'd ever come here as long as Jerry is in charge. I'm not trying to defend Garrett. I think he's limited as a coach by his own apprehensions and stubbornness, but I also think he's limited by his boss - the same boss that we expect to go out and hire another Jimmy Johnson.
Disagree with you that Payton would not come here. His kids live in Dallas last I knew but he re-upped with NO because he's not going to turn down security offered him there. Jerry would have to compensate NO to get him but I feel he'd come.

You can't make a false/impossible assumption to open your thread and then expect a reasonable argument to change your mind. I don't think anyone from the anti-Garrett crowd believes Jerry will hire the perfect coach. Not gonna happen with Jerry. But it's not a lot to ask to hire a HC who understands basic clock management and can be a little imaginative with the offense. Garrett is a liability on gameday and no lead is safe.

At least the (new) guy has proven he knows how to have success with superstar players, as opposed to Garrett who is a .500 HC with a franchise QB.

I agree so what's your question again? Every coach who takes a job here knows what he's getting into. Garrett was no different. I don't buy the meme that he was building something or it took years for him to turn over an aging roster. That stuff happens every day in today's NFL. Teams go from worst to first almost overnight in some cases. Garrett may have input, but his job is to keep Charlotte company on draft day while the wildcatter shoots for the stars.

All I expect from my HC is to be able to coach and motivate his players to get the most out of them. I expect him to instill a certain philosophy and attitude. I expect his players to know when to get out of bounds and understand game situations. And I expect him to understand basic clock management that even a high school coach would know. I wouldn't hire Garrett to coach my son's high school team.

Don't insult Campo. Garrett's not even in his league. Campo won 5 games with a horrible team and no QB while Garrett has taken Romo in his prime and eeked out 8 wins on average. Garrett has proven he can't win a damn thing with a franchise QB.
I think you dislike Garrett as much as I do but even I had not given thought to your Campo comparison. It's a great one because it's only 3 more wins average than Campo and even in those 8 win years he repeatedly failed in the final game with playoff spot on the line to get win #9. Nice analysis.
