Serious question...
if Jerry was willing to make a big (and smart) shakeup and fire Rod...who would take his place to finish the season? Who do we have in house who would likely take over?

(Although I can't imagine it would be difficult to find someone to just tell guys to "find a place and get after it" which seems to be the extent of his "coordination". I'm pretty sure his headset isn't actually plugged in)

Second part...at the end of the season who would you really want?

I dont know who the hot names are in college, and I dont know if any would want to take the jump into the NFL for anything except a head coaching gig but we desperately need a younger mind that's going to bring some fresh ideas to the table and influence the philosophy in terms of how we evaluate players in the draft and in free agency on that side of the ball. Nobody with ties to the current regime should be promoted up, just going to be more of the same.

  1. No he will not fire Rod
  2. If Rod was gone I'd take Paul Guenther or Marvin Lewis from the Bengals. I like the nasty they have on defense.

Marvin Lewis is just another aging guy that used to have a good scheme. The whole problem with Marinelli is he hasn't adjusted with way the NFL has changed.

Brent Venables from Clemson is probably the biggest DC in college right now.

There are some other interesting names such as Mike Elko at Notre Dame. He made Wake Forest into a pretty solid defense that could force turnovers and he's completely turned around the Notre Dame defense in one offseason. He preaches the importance of turnovers. ND had 14 turnovers in the entire 2016 season and they now have 14 after 5 games.

Rod preaches turnovers too. We just never get them. Almost on a record setting pace in fact.

Playing as far off the ball as we do doesn't leave many chances for ints by DB's. Safetys look like they are waiting for the runner to come to them so unless some unsecured ball not much chance for turnovers. LB's usually out of position on runners coming through line
so don't get to hit them right away to cause a fumble.

You can teach stripping the ball all you want but if you aren't close initially the odds go down to get a TO in my opinion.

Yup. Rod preaches it, but doesn't seem to let players be in position to do it.

Elko would be a GREAT hire. What he has done with the Notre Dame defense is nothing short of amazing. Last year, the team had 3 sacks from the defensive line all season. They are in double digits now.

Don Brown from Michigan, and Boston College before that, is another good DC candidate.

We don't have time to take a chance on a college coach, they are hit or miss. We need a proven winner that the players will buy into right away. Who? I don't know.

I think this should be his last season. If he was willing to take a demotion to a DL coach then sure but after 4 years of poor coverage in the middle of the field, I feel that it is time to find someone that can coordinate an entire defense and not just the front 4.

I reserve the right to change my mind and feel that he should finish the season but I cannot be the only one who feels this way.
