The McVay-Riley Dynamic

I'd try to get Riley next year as a OC with the commitment to hadn him the HC job within 3 year. If I am Riley I'd take it just to (1) learn the ropes of an NFL team culture (2) give myself a couple of year to draft/sign few pieces for my system - esp QB

Jerry, if you gonna stick around for the foreseeable future, can you do the one thing you are good at? Make Riley a deal and get him here

Unfortunately, Riley would never go for that, he was an OC before they fired Stoops and if he lets it be known he's interested, these teams with 1st round QB's like NYJ, AZ, BUF and CLE and maybe even JAX or SF are going to be knocking on his door for HC. This McVay success has been noticed by a lot of GM's and the NFL is a copycat league.

I would like to thank Jason Garrett for his 11 years of service in Dallas but now uh...I think we need to uh...go in a different direction. Introducing...uh...your new head coach and vice president of football operations...uh...Lincoln Riley...uh...Scott Linehan is being removed as offensive coordinator and uh...Riley will call his own plays. Uh...Kris Richard is being...uh....promoted to defensive coordinator.

What's with the McVey success thing????? The guy walked into the perfect situation. Let's see when contracts are up (Goff's esp) and he is asked to work within the cap space that include a couple of mega contracts and a LOT of no-talent personnel. Let's see how he drafts and recruits to keep the team winning. He walked into the perfect window where they are throwing all the money into big contracts before Goff comes knocking

Nevertheless, McVey did work as OC for a couple of years. Why not Riley?

Because he won't have to if he's serious about the NFL. McVay wasn't already a HC and HC's don't drop down unless they're out of work. Most GM's would probably prefer for Riley to log a few years as an OC but with him, it will be a seller's market so they'll have to give him the HC/OC title, if he is really coming out and that is still unknown.

Your points are valid about when teams become successful and the other teams begin to swoop in. His assignment was to take over the offense and fix the QB, they're number 1 pick. He seems to have done that and has his offense performing at a high level.

I do not think many look beneath the surface of what looks successful. The fact is there are more jobs than excellent coaches for them. The NFL kept recycling Turner and Fox to prove that.
