The McVay-Riley Dynamic

If Garrett stays..sigh.. hurts to type that...I'd want to see him bring in a young, innovative OC.

Someone like Kendel Briles, (University of Houston), Ryan Day (Ohio State), Mike Kafka (Chiefs).

Would love, love, love Riley, but that Eagles win last night probably just bought Garrett some job security. One win alone's not going to do it, but losing last night would have basically ended our season and 6 weeks of lame-duck football following that would probably have Jerry getting pretty antsy. If we are competitive up till the end (as seems to happen in the NFC East), I think Garrett gets another season.

Don’t worry there are plenty of losses left on the schedule.

I’m a huge Texas Tech fan and although I like Kliff Kingsburyas an excellent offensive football mind, he is not a very good college head coach and would likely not be a good NFL HC. He would be a great OC, but not HC. While HC at a Tech, Kingsbury is 35-38.

One thing I would endorse him for is his QB development. Before his time at Tech, he was OC at Texas A&M and developed Johnny Manziel, and before that he was at Univ of Houston, where he developed Case Keenum. At Tech, 4 of his former QBs are currently playing in the NFL including Pat Mahomes, Baker Mayfield, Davis Webb and Nic Shimonek. Kingsbury is famous for taking raw QB talent and making it into something. This year, his true freshman QB Alan Bowman was leading the nation in passing for a while before getting hurt.
would he leave for an NFL OC postion? curious... Im a longhorn fan LOL that was crazy game Saturday..

Ok. I just wanted to be clear this was mere speculation on your part based on what you are seeing and believing. You have no direct evidence otherwise.
If I did, I would have presented it as such instead of starting out with "I think." I didn't realize the audience I was addressing needed these things spelled out verbatim for them because they are unable to comprehend the meaning of words. I will promise to tread more lightly with you next time and be more cognizant of your capabilities.

There are lots of potential options. I just hope Jerry doesn't have tunnel vision and makes Riley the only candidate. Let the process play out - have a handful of legitimate candidates with a chance and let them prove something to you in the interview process. Riley would be interesting but there are also current NFL assistants who should be in the discussion

I said from the beginning that Garrett was safe because he's family and Booger is comfortable and every time some talk surfaces about Garrett being on the hot seat, Booger throws ice on that. Until now.

However, I am changing my mind because of the obvious effect Sean McVay had on Goff and the offense overall and Riley's rep as a QB guru. Same kind of coach with the same kind of personality.

Now, add to this, OU has the best OL in college ball so he's not just a QB guy and if they hadn't lost one of the best RB's in college in Anderson, they would be even harder to handle.

Add to this, it has recently come out that Riley would be interested in the NFL and sooner than later. Probably got that guy in Rodger's State Farm commercials as his agent.

So, if he's already letting it be known and he's considered this QB guru, what do the Cowboys need for the young QB they seem to want to keep?

There are going to be 6-8 HC openings and Riley will be the top college name but he's not coming for an OC gig, they're going to have to give him the reins to get him.

I now believe Garrett would have to do something extraordinary for him like win a couple of playoff games and get to the NFC Champs game or Riley is going to be the next DC HC.

As you can see from my avatar, I am an OU fan. Where have you seen it said that he might be interested in the NFL?

One thing that concerns me about Riley is that his teams give up a lot of points.
He has no defense to speak of but that's Big 12 ball. That's why it's a lot of fun to watch if you like scoring.

It's just like Andy Reid, if he hadn't had Jim Johnson in his ear all of the time to get him some guys they would have seldom drafted D guys above the 4th.

In college, it is difficult for the Big 12 to recruit 4 and 5 star D players because they elect to go to the ACC, Big 10 and SEC for the exposure. With the way the Big 12 O's are set up, it's hard for D players to stand out and get noticed by NFL scouts when they're hanging 40 burgers on each other. Bedlam last Sat, they had 62 points on the board at halftime.

If they were to get Riley, they would need to have a strong DC for him and make sure they kept that side of the ball stocked for him. If a team is going to have a double duty HC, they must have balance and strong coordinator on the other side that performs almost is an independent fashion. The smartest thing the Rams did was get seasoned vet coaches for their young HC. You never see Payton do anything on the D side except get mad at his DC. Same with Andy Reid. "Don't make me come down there and talk to you". LMAO, ever see Saban with his OC's? He used to sneak up on Kiffin.

Since being on the O side of the ball is proactive and the D side reactive, any HC that is also the OC is busy thinking about his next series when the D is on the field. Ever watch Reid watch the D, he's in a zone and already thinking about his next plays. When he had Jim Johnson, sometimes he was busy with his offense and had an assistant watching the game for him.

I read it two or three weeks ago and actually heard it during one of the games the same week. What no one knows is if that's "gimme more dough" game playing. It wasn't "I want to leave" it was more "I'd be interested in the NFL". I don't think McVay rocketing up the ladder is lost on a young smart coach like Riley. And being considered an O guru is just the ticket.

Back when Petrino got caught with his pants down on a Harley, the AD, Long at AR, let it leak that he was interested in Les Miles. LSU immediately gave him a 1M raise and it was all part of the plan. I read some interesting stuff after that how these guys position to get raises or extensions and most of it is a big fraternity.

It makes sense the rumors would be about him because the other big 3, Saban, Dabo and Meyer have < 0 interest in the NFL and taking a pay cut. I read an article that one of the better thought of scouts for a NFL team felt Riley would be the best candidate to make the switch and has the best understanding of the college and pro offenses. He is going to get some calls.

It’s been all over the local media in Dallas. Google it.
It’s all speculative noise.
peavey, don't listen to Greg, it's real. He's just jealous because he digs him some ginger.

I will say this, there usually is fire beneath the smoke because everyone seems to talk. There are at least 96 employees of NFL teams named Anonymous Source. I suspect agents are behind it and everything else including fake news.

Riley hasn't come out and said he isn't interested so he's playing the game the right way.

Maybe....A lot is going to hinge on how the season ends for Tech. They have lost 3 straight close games against ranked opponents. But their final two games are against K-State and Baylor. They should win both and then see how they do in a bowl game. But if Tech flames out in the next two “Coach Bro” May be looking for a new gig.

I’ve always heard Kingsbury preferred college football over the NFL. But if he gets booted at Tech, he will have no problem getting another job because of his offensive genius. Will be interesting.

It came across as though you believed this is what Jerry was seeing and believing not just a thought. I was calling it out because it appeared to be what you were seeing and believing not Jerry.

I don't know about that. I think he has watched what McVay has done with the Rams and what Pederson has done for Philly and it is gnawing at him that his guy hasn't produced squat in 8 years except a couple nice seasons he managed to put together against weak schedules following horrible seasons.

I think he has seen it, and he's anxious and envious. He sees Riley as a McVay/Pederson type and doesn't want to see him slip away. I can almost guarantee that when the college season ends, or even before, depending what direction this team is headed, that he will have conversations with Riley about taking over here and what that would like.

Barring a miraculously deep run to the NFCCG or the SB, I think he will finally pull the plug on The Process.

Lets hope so, nice win but it could have gone to OT and the way the birds were moving the ball and the kicker they have another FG win for Birds...

I’d love to have Riley. I just don’t believe he’d come to Dysfunctional Dallas.

It’s mere hopeful speculation with no specific sources at this point.

It only came across that way because either:

A. You wanted it to and felt like being a pompous db

or

B. You don't understand that "I think" indicates an opinion is being given

Take your pick.

C. It came across as though you’re assuming Jerry sees and believes as you do.

I’m simply discounting that notion or opinion.

Another thing about Riley...

It's one thing to produce against big 12 defenses but his offenses came out and produced against tOSU and Georgia as well.

I'm not an OU fan at all but I don't know how many times I've watched them play and been in awe of some of the playcalls and designs he has.

Riley has a great "feel" for play calling. That being said indont think the Cowboys can lure him away from OU.

He’s be stupid to leave OU if it’s about job security and control over players.

If he wants glory then come win in Dallas. He’d be a legend.

I would also consider the titans oc.

1st, that's how I wanted it to come across, as an assumption. Again we circle back to the root of the sentence that you seem to be struggling to grasp, "I think."

2nd, unless you have specific evidence that Jerry is not thinking any of these things, then you are in no position to discount any assumption or opinion I have on the matter.
