The Nerve of This Guy: Cowboys’ Jaylon Smith on 'Mike and Mike’ show

...On learning from pro bowl LB Sean Lee…

“Sean’s a great guy. And for me, it’s just watching him, he’s so disciplined. He loves the game of football. So I’m definitely happy to be here.”

Aside from his injury, what will his greatest challenge in transitioning to the NFL be?

“It’s actually a huge privilege for me to be able to play in the NFL, but whenever you’re transitioning into a higher level of sport, the biggest difference is the speed of the game and it’s all about how fast can you learn the playbook and not just memorize what you do but actually understand the concepts. So for me being able to sit back, I get to learn every single thing; that way, when I come back everything’s at ease. The mental side, there’s people who went through injuries before, Sean Lee’s been through multiple knee injuries, so I have a great support system around me. I’m definitely not going through this alone.”

Smith isn’t simply sitting around waiting for the nerve to regenerate, either.

“There’s so much to prove. There’s so much room for improvement and growth. I’ve had this time to develop my mind and become a better man in this transition period to becoming a professional. For me now, it’s continuing to work hard and get my body back right and learn the playbook so when I come back everything will be at ease and I’ll be a dominant player again. Because of the magnitude of the program, everywhere you go in the country, in the world, they know the Dallas Cowboys and at the collegiate level they know Notre Dame, so I’m accustomed to being in the spotlight, if you will. But it’s a blessing just to be able to play this game that I love.”...

Was he on again today or is this a rehash of similar thread we had a few weeks ago when Jaylon Smith appeared on Mike & Mike?

I heard that interview and I came away very impressed with him as a person. A couple days ago there was a thread on what some scouts had said about him. That scout that called him either dumb, stupid or slow obviously did not ever have a one on one conversation with him. This kid is bright, smart and sharp then add grounded and down to earth to his persona.

Agreed.

Myself, I don't hear something positive and immediately discard it as useless, as well. Good stuff to this linebacker's ears. No matter his injury requirements, the time under tutelage of Sean Lee will be worth every cent paid in the interim. Some major stimulus direction being added right now. Sean Lee and Sean Lee II looks mighty tastey to this old linebacker. Just think of what that adds to packages as well!!
