by saying he had a Great Offensive line ...

ask the arguer of that position whether he supports Gesek, Gogan, Stepnoski, Williams (yes, we know Allen should go) as Hall of Fame candidates.

If not, then tell them to SHADDUP!

Did you just read a JFE article? j/k

Most people discredit Emmitt because they are jealous. Most franchises are jealous.

I mean Dallas is a young team and has been to more superbowls then any team I believe and is tied for the most wins. Not to mention we had almost 30 years of straight winning seasons.

What I feel for the Yankee's is similar what others feel about the Cowboys.

It doesnt matter what others think. You and I know Emmitt was one of, if not the best ever.

There are only 30 modern era O-linemen in the Hall of Fame. Given that every year in the NFL we start with 160 starting OL players, it is reasonable to assume that many "great" lines had few legit HOF candidates.

Honestly if you look at that list you've got Allen as a legit guy -- but Williams would have been a candidate if his level of play stayed where it was pre-accident.

I'd love for you to show me an O-line where 3 or more guys got into the hall.

Or we could just tell them to shut up to start with...

I choose that.

Of course, if folks downgraded his accomplishments by saying that he hung around for 3-4 extra years just to pad his stats then I'd have to agree with them.

how is sticking around long enough to acheive your goals stat padding?
the guy set the bar and stuck around to acheive his goals

thats not stat padding thats being a stronger person than most and it earns more respect than I generally give out to football players.

How is two extra years with AZ "acheiving goals?"

He set the record and could have quit then. he then went to AZ to pad his stats.

Clear as day son.

he didn't want to stop playing
thats not padding

the guy didn't wanna let go of football, it was his life it defined him, if he wasn't emmit smith the football player then who was he?

its not clear as day, you just wanna think it is.

if you never did anything but played tiddly winks and one day someone told you you couldn't play it anymore, wouldn't you do anything in your power to play it one more time...

cut the guy some slack

Agreed, who are we to tell someone when they have to give up the game they love?

And it's not like the NFL is a charity case. If you can't play anymore, you're not getting any snaps. It doesn't matter who you are.

Didn't he break 1,000 yards rushing one of his seasons in Arizona? I know he had one pretty decent season with them. I don't call that "hanging around." I call that "contributing."

The Yankees are like the Commanders in a way. They dont know a thing about team chemistry and dont draft well, but every year go out and try and win it all by signing the biggest name free agents. I hate the Yankees for that simple reason. Because big George has all the money, he just gets every big name player regardless of team chemistry. Its rediculous.

hanging around implies complacency sticking around shows fortitude.

935 yards in his final season. 3.5 YPC. FYI 3.5 YPC sucks. That's nearly identical to Hambrick's last season in Dallas (973 yards, 3.5 YPC).

Nobody was calling T-Ham a contributor at that time.

Last World Series the Yanks won were with a core that were either built up through the minors or through trades. Their free agency spending didn't get really bad until after the 2000 season.

And shame on you for making me defend the Yanks  Man I really hate that team and their fans!

At age 35. After more than 4,140 career carries.

Jerome Bettis is being hailed as a hero after rushing for 368 yards at 3.3 YPC, and he was only 33 with about 1,000 fewer carries of pounding.

I think my point was he should have quit -- at least Bettis has a reason to stay -- he was on a team with a legit shot at a SB with the team that he had played for most of his career. Emmitt's stayed b/c he didn't want anyone breaking his record.

but Emmitt only needed something like 600 yards to break the record, he broke it, and played 2 more years, I hardly call that stat-padding, not saying you're saying that, I'd call it not knowing when to quit

that's purely subjective, so Jerry Rice did the same thing? even though he's a millenia away from anyone breaking his record, and has been for quite a few years now

Were they calling him 35 years old?

Cuz as far as I know, they were calling him 26 or 27.

And with nowhere near Emmitt's track record.

Emmitt talked extensively about his legacy and wanting 20K yards so that it would be his record forever.
