The media gets people to buy into propoganda in sports just like they do in other outlets.

If the media turns on the NFL then many sheep will follow wherever they get lead.

I got to say I'm kind of shocked at some of the members of the media that are willing to question this.

Florio's comments shock me.

@Reality I think the NFL had their hands tied with EE's case. They screwed the pooch one too many times with these DV cases that EE's case never really had a chance because they already had a predetermined outcome. Do we really think if the NFL didn't suspend EE for at least more than one game the media would leave it at that?

In all this, the media has been forefront and center because they are the ones that are poking holes in the NFL's decisions in all these cases. It doesn't matter what the accused did or didn't do, the more important thing is how does the NFL continue to cater to a family audience and increase sales? That's what matters at the end of the day right? Does little Johnny Jr still root for his favorite team that has a "woman beater" player on it with Johnny Sr and Mommy Jane on the Sunday Ticket? Take a "hard line approach" to social issues to show that you "care", but don't have any type of standards for punishment.

If the NFL cared about these social issues the punishments would be standardized and more harsh.

The Last CBA the players were so greedy on money that they let the owners get everything else. This time it will be very different.

People keep saying this but it's not true. The clause in question, clause 46, has been in the CBA for like 30 years. It's just that Goodell has *******ized it beyond what anyone ever suspected a commissioner would do. No commissioner before him ever took it to such extremes and the PA never even considered it to be an issue. That won't be the case during the next negotiations.

It's not always about greed, but rather a gamble of what you think the other side will do if you give them control over something. In this case, the NFLPA assumed the NFL would not act in a way that would damage its own brand, and as it turns out, that hasn't been the case.

That's the dumbest thing I've ever heard about this.

Why would they want all of this power to punish like this?

They have constantly screwed it up and they know it. They can't get it right.

I don't believe they want any part of it anymore.

They will cave on this quick in CBA negotiations.

Which is why I think the owners can't wait to no longer have this kind of power.

They will either bring in an outside party that decides or they will just let the courts decide.

No, I believe it was all about the money last time. Remember it was Smith running the NFLPA side of things. Now the clause was indeed there long before but while SOME of the players in the NFLPA advisory board were looking at changing it they got voted down by Smith's faction.

The NFL is so popular, at least for now, that it could be its own media though! The NFL is still stuck in the past where it needed the media more than the media needed it. The NFL is very popular and a proven money maker. The media fights over who will get the rights to broadcast games and the ones who get those rights, promote their broadcasts like crazy. The tables have turned and the NFL needs to realize it is the fans they need, not the media.

The NFL is run by men who are comfortable with the status quo. They don't want to shake the tree because of the many other fruits that might fall. They would rather keep picking the low hang fruits that have been feeding them for as long as I've been alive.

Who, for the most part, don't even watch or care about Football! The NFLHQ is literally alienating their customer base to appease an entity that doesn't give a **** about them or their sport! Lunacy.

Well the NFL has been pretty much peeing on the hard core fans for years between upping ticket prices and as you point out pandering to those that probably never watch anyway.

NFL appealing to women's groups, victim groups etc.

Well, bro! I gotta agree but if we dig deeper and further back the most common tactic of 'those' with an agenda is to apply loud, heavy and incessant pressure on those institutions of which they don't agree with ,want to make 'go away' or are envious of and want a piece of the action (cash flow) it's been incrementally apparent for years now with the denuding of the N.F.L. as compared to the one of old where it's apparent attitude was " if you don't stick your nose in,,,it won't get bent"
Some people just hate
America and the N.F.L. is a huge part of being AMERICAN.

The owners make all their money or most of it off the TV contracts.
The TV networks make all their money off the sponsors the companies that placed the ads.
The Ray Rice video got sponsors and I guess their wives all upset and they threatened to pull ads if the NFL didn't do something.
So the NFL is trying to do something and they are not doing a very good job but it all goes back to the sponsors because that's where all the money comes from.
The one problem I see is releasing info to the media.
They shouldn't release any information
including failed drug test.
Also I think player's should lose game pay but still have to play the games.
That way it doesn't hurt fans or team.
And keep the reason private.

All the NFL has to do is get out of their own way. They do one thing well and one thing only, they provide the best American Football product on the planet ... stick to that. They aren't an extension of the police or the DA's office, they are positively awful when trying to play these roles. Just stick to what you do best and leave the other stuff to those who do it best. It's really not rocket science.

The NFL is trying to win favor with the media (which will NEVER happen) at the expense of the fans and itself. The NFL needs to wake up and realize they don't need the media .. they need the fans. If the media stops broadcasting games, the NFL can sell those games directly and make even more money. They need to be more worried about fan support than they are media outrage.

The NFL makes money. It makes money for its owners. It makes money for its players. It makes money for the cities where the games are played. That money comes from the fans, either directly or indirectly. The NFL needs to refocus their strategy on winning fans over.

Where they could try leading in doing what was right as opposed to following.

The players conduct is creating the negative drama not the NFL discipline of them.

The Personal Conduct Policy is just a means to provide a path for the players to continue playing while providing a perception they are being disciplined for their behavior because the owners want this talent .

The NFL can survive without this talent . This problem talent makes up less than 1% of the talent pool. Instead of the drama of these drawn out investigations over DV teams could just release them and the NFL unofficially ban them like they have with Rice.

But with owners like Jerry who are willing to take these risk on players like Hardy because it provides a shortcut for talent desperately needed despite the negative publicity because he knows his brand is strong enough to survive ,the NFL has to place these mechanisms in place to protect the leagues image.

I'd place even stricter guidelines in place with more severe punishment on teams continuing to pursue these high risk characters with loss of draft picks and suspension of the owner, GM or coach who pursues them.

The public is fed up with the criminal and thuggish element in sports and professional sports in particular. We see enough of it in mainstream society . We're tired of being exposed to it for our favorite pastime and the media drawing attention to it. Just clean it out and be done with it. The league will survive just fine without this very small percentage of risky characters.

Fans think every player or team needs this 1% but teams would adjust without it and eventually it would serve as the greatest deterrent if these highly talented athletes want to perform at the highest level earning millions of dollars .

As for the drug abusers. Allowing 3 drug failures before the 4th test suspends you is also another all too tolerable situation . What companies out there are allowing you to retain your job after 3 failed drug test . Again, these guys need to be released and banned from the league as long as they are a banned substance.

Do we really want to clean up the league as the NFL personal conduct policies were established to do or are we simply providing a perception they're trying to bandaid the issue with these paths to continue providing them to play which for some reason fans or owners believe we can't play football without them.

Football has always had an element of risky behavior but now with today's technology we know everything immediately with the medias exposure. Knowing is everything . We didn't know everything about players back in the day but once we did like Lance Rentzel, Duane Thomas and Hollywood Henderson they were released and gone .

Ya forgot the biggest one Reality. "makes money for" GOODELL. That ****makes a cool $40 million a year and for what? These owners need to sit down and look where the problem is. Time to vote him out. He's worthless on what he allows to continue in the NFL. Let's start on the bottom of the ole pole.

Goodell should NOT allow any player to use his status as an NFL player to show the world how he feels about our flag & freedom by kneeling/sitting down. Right there and then Goodell should of put a stop to it. Davis should of been informed immediately by Goodell to not have this nonsense continue by Skittles nor any other player that the league won't stand for it. But no. Goodell just sits back UNTIL the media attacks him to do anything. Go back to retirement you thug.

No doubt but what it should be very different -- what happens in the future remains to be seen. I'm certainly hoping for it to change. The players will have to stand up for their rights, for a change. Their fate will rest in their determination to make it happen. I'll wish them luck in a tough fight.
