The Number 88 and Lamb

I really wish Lamb would have chosen a different number than 88. I know he wanted a different number and was talked out of it by Jerry and others. I think Irvin asked him to wear it. Maybe Dez too?

The 88 just has too many connections to the past and I think the team needs a huge dose of future and less talk of the past.

We don’t do it with any other number. Didn’t give Emmitt and Elliott #33 or Romo and Dak #12.
Check my “Lamb repping #88” thread. Or maybe your thread is a spinoff on that one. Plagiarism

That damn Jerry, overstepping his bounds again. "Socks to jocks" clearly doesn't cover jersey numbers.

Plagiarism? Don’t flatter yourself. Trust me, I wouldn’t copy any of your responses. :) Spin-off or derivative would be better words. Do you want some of my likes from it as a royalty? Help yourself.

Your thread got me thinking about the number 88 and why former players and fans want to hand it down and anoint a player with the number.

I didn’t want to post it in your thread because I didn’t want to overshadow or hijack your simple thread. Plus, I didn’t want to have it buried in your thread where few people would see it.

No your reply here is good enough.

What is so special about 88? Is it because numerous good WRs had that number? Not so with #73 for Larry Allen, Ralph Neely and Danny Noonan (ha ha, I kid). If one more great wears #73, do we continue with the anointing ceremony?

Maybe when one flips the number 8 90 degrees it looks like infinity.

Not a big deal. Just seems interesting with the Cowboys and some fascination with 88. I’m kind of superstitious with numbers and assume deeper meanings than probably most people.

Numbers are retired all across the league. But not with the Cowboys.

Instead of retiring numbers, I'd rather see players *earn* them. The anointings we have for 88 suck.

88 is a cool number for a wr, 7 is cool for a qb and 33 is cool for a rb and 44 is cool for a full back.
there was a time when 80 was the glory number for all the great wr's in the 80's, hill, rice, lofton, mark Jackson, hennery ellard, but it seems to have lost its glow and is used by tight ends in the modern era. 11 was quite a cool number for qb's that time too if you didn't have 7, same 1 for kickers. its probably a marketing thing alright but we hope in inspires lamb he is really good and fit to be a #1 target.

Ron Cellars that might have been the 1972 roster oops but I think there was an 88 on the 71 roster
Sellers came in 72, I was thinking maybe Pettis Norman or Billy Truax, but I don't think they were on the 71 SB roster.

We don't see CeeDee complaining about it!

Not sure why we'd object, when he doesn't.

Can't we dispel what doesn't concern us? o_O

Of course not, people need to be able to attack Jerry that is what this is all about. Lamb seems to be content with it and moved on but some around here need to be able to slam Jerry.

I agree with you on the #88 thing. I wish the team would stop force feeding numbers on young players. It didn’t seem to bother Lamb last year, but it wasn’t the number he wanted originally. It’s just a little strange. If Lamb goes on to a HOF career, it would have been nice for him to have a different number. It’s not a big deal but I do agree I wish the team would stop doing this.
I really, really wanted him to wear #10.

Q: Now that Jaclyn Smith is going to be wearing #9, will Tony Romo immediately be referred to as Toni Romo?

Jerry forced it.

It doesn't look right at all on him. Bad call by Jerry but they just had to have it for marketing reasons.
Jerry was just trying to put and end to the Dez buzzing around the Cowboys.

Was Reggie Rucker still on the roster in 1971 if he was he was # 88 im not sure he made it through the season

I believe he was, but when they got Lance Alworth I believe they waived him mid season. And your right he was 88.

If he was not on the team during the Superbowl we won 1 without an 88 on the roster but I thought it was 0

Jerry Jones basically forced 88 on CeeDee to honor Jerry's former teammate Jerry Lamb. CeeDee never really had a choice.
