The Number 88 and Lamb

I really wish Lamb would have chosen a different number than 88. I know he wanted a different number and was talked out of it by Jerry and others. I think Irvin asked him to wear it. Maybe Dez too?

The 88 just has too many connections to the past and I think the team needs a huge dose of future and less talk of the past.

We don’t do it with any other number. Didn’t give Emmitt and Elliott #33 or Romo and Dak #12.

We do it with other numbers but not a lot. Jimmy drafted Emmitt to be the RB in Dallas for 4 years. He never ever expected him to be the league leader in rushing and what's more, Jimmy and Jerry never appreciated what they had, when they bought the Cowboys. They were full of themselves and really wanted nothing to do with the Schramm/Landry Cowboys. So they didn't really care about the history of numbers but they would soon learn their mistake. Fans cared and eventually Jerry would learn it. I don't think he ever liked it but he learned it. But here's the thing, notice that Jerry really only concerns himself with certain players and numbers. As example, he takes interest in 88 because he sees Irvin as his guy, even though he's really not. Irvin was drafted by Landry. Dez was his guy so now 88 is his. 12 was Roger and that's the other regime. So was 33 etc.... See, it's kind of a pissing match, I suspect and to be honest, it's stupid but that is how it looks to me.

Besides, Romo or Dak, neither are nearly as good as Roger was. It is what it is......

At what point do you stop retiring numbers? If a player comes along who is better than Staubach, Lilly, etc. does one just say sorry, too late? Sorry, we no longer retire numbers no matter how good you will ever be.
