“Ding-ding, ding-ding” “2007 NFL Season – Arriving!”
I just had to put a little U.S. Navy touch on this upcoming season for the 2007 Dallas Cowboys. Even though Opening Day is still a month and a half away, there will be fresh topics now that Training Camp 2007 has begun.
For you new Cowboy fans out there, or Cowboy fans just learning the who’s who when it comes to media personalities, let me give you some advice. Don’t listen to Randy Galloway and Dale Hanson. These two clowns are so agenda driven now because they are so irate that Jerry didn’t hire their drinking buddy Norv Turner as Head Coach. Plus Dale will always have an axe to grind as Jerry fired him off the broadcast some fourteen years ago. There are others that have agendas, but not to the extent of Lenny and Squiggy.
This is the time of year, for 32 NFL teams, that hope springs eternal. We all know that only one will fully see that through. I truly believe that Dallas has just as good of a shot of going to the Super Bowl as any other team in the conference. Here is my list as to why:
On Offense:
- Dallas ranked 5th overall in total offense. That is something offensive minded Chan Gailey could not achieve even with Hall of Fame bound triplets.
- Dallas averaged over 26 points per game. When was the last time this team had that kind of production? (1995)
- Only once did the Cowboys score under 17 points. This shows consistent offensive production. Only on Christmas did this offense truly flutter. It did not matter if Bledsoe or Romo was the quarterback either.
- Who significant did the Cowboys lose on offense during free agency? Al Johnson? He does give a concern to the center depth. How about the retirement of Marco Rivera? My heart breaks for him because the consummate professional just couldn’t get over his back problems. Leonard Davis moving into the guard position upgrades the offensive line.
- Tony Romo has eleven games of experience under his belt. It is more than what he had last season. I am fully confident he will not disappoint.
On Defense:
- The young, promising players all got a year more mature. Age is not an issue with this team at this time.
- I fully expect this defense to be less predictable. Everyone seems to be very excited about the new scheme and philosophies that Wade Phillips brings. This should alleviate much of the late-season meltdown that occurred last December.
- Ken Hamlin and Pat Watkins should ease all fans worries of the free safety position.
- Anthony Spencer will be productive providing a pass rush opposite Ware. This is regardless of how well Ellis comes back. I do admire Ellis spending extra time with Spencer this off-season.
Therefore, I do think that Dallas can be in the top ten in both offensive and defensive categories. Gee wiz, weren’t they in the top ten just before the December meltdown?
There are many people who criticize the Cowboys draft this past April. I assure you that I am not one of them. The people who criticize the Cowboys draft are just mad that they did not take the player they wanted. Let me make a few points here:
- The way Jerry maneuvered the draft in the first round appears to me like a stroke of genius. They had Anthony Spencer in their crosshairs all along. They way they traded with Cleveland, getting their 2008 1st round pick, then trading up with the Eagles of all teams, to still get the player they almost took at pick #22 is truly amazing. I also believe Parcells taught Jerry to be patient in the draft, so that opportunities might arise like this one. Joe Thomas, of all people had nothing but positive things to say about him.
- Knowing that Adams and Colombo will not be participating in practices this week, then who is bellyaching over the Marten and Free picks now? I’ll take these two guys over Tucker and Petitti anytime, anyplace.
- Seeing how there is NO SUCH THING AS A SECOND DAY BUST, any productivity from Stanbeck, Free, Folk, Anderson, Brown, and Ball is gravy!
So here is to a great start to the most promising season this franchise has had in over a decade.
