The Offense might be able to turn the corner

This offense has always had potential, but it never seemed to be able to really execute since 2007. I think we are poised to have a tremendous year on offense.

I can't recall Romo ever having this many weapons at his disposal.

1. Dez Bryant
2. Miles Austin
3. Jason Witten
4. Terrance Williams
5. Gavin Escobar
6. Cole Beasley
7. Dwayne Harris

Not to mention guys like Rosario/Smith and Hanna. I think our running backs might excel in the passing game as well this year just given how much space I think they'll be given.

I think the 12 formation is going to work really well for us this year. Possibly even better than it did for the Patriots, who never had the wide receivers we did.

Dez Bryant is seemingly jumping into the role of a NFL elite WR this year.

Miles Austin need only stay healthy and become more consistent. The amount of single coverage he should see, especially in the slot should be problematic for defenses.

Jason Witten is Jason Witten, but I'm looking very much forward to seeing him being used in the Red Zone more often. Never did understand why he wasn't used more before. In 07 when we were really productive he had 7 touchdowns, and in 2010 when Romo was actually hurt he ended up with 9 touchdowns.

Terrance Williams has the potential to take what Robinson did and take it to an entirely different level. I think Robinson's success was simply due to being a competent receiver who was able to work with Romo and have chemistry with him. He had no success for the Jaguars. You give Romo more weapons, and if those weapons keep working to get open, Romo will hit them.

Gavin Escobar is going to be great this year. Yeah, I said it. Reports that he runs smooth routes, and catches everything, is going to open things up for us. I expect him to be used just like New England used Hernandez. In that Y position. And he is going to create mismatches. His blocking is apparently much better than expected.

Cole Beasley, I would actually put higher than Harris. I think he is developing into a more well rounded wide receiver. I think he will become a great option in the slot if we part ways with Austin at some point. I think he will get some opportunities in the slot and with Austin on the outside this year as well. Still not completely sold on Harris, but I can't wait to see what he does against Miami.

The offensive line is slowly but surely coming along. I think we're about a year away from where we would like to be in regards to the line, but we're not out there signing expensive free agents. Free is actually looking like he could rebound, which is great. I can't wait to see Smith against someone not named Ware. I'm looking forward to Leary replacing Livings. Frederick I think will be a staple in the center for the next decade. The biggest concern is right guard. Hopefully Arkin could develop into that role, but if he can't obviously we need to draft a guard within the first three rounds next year. And probably a tackle the year after that to replace Free.

My VERY early (obviously) draft priorities next year look like this:

1. Defensive End
2. Guard
3. Defensive Tackle

Lastly DeMarco Murray looks like this could be his break out year, again like many others, he just needs to stay healthy. He is a force when he is in the game for us. Does anyone have our record in games that Murray has started in? Dunbar surprisingly is looking great as well, so much so that Randle might end up being the 3rd option back there. Though he might be able to find a role as the goal line and short distance back. Tanner seems to be the odd man out. There is no way I see us taking 4 halfbacks on the roster.

The competition at receiver is really tight. Do we carry 5 or 6, and who is the 6th man? We should see a pretty good camp battle over these spots. The odd man out really is that 5th receiver. Which I think is between Beasley and Harris. I think Rogers or Armstrong would simply just be lucky/happy to make the team.

I don't think we carry more than 4 tight ends, so the battle is very much between Smith and Rosario. I think Hanna might have cost himself the #2 tight end spot by being injured. I don't see Escobar looking back. Hanna will have to hope for a lot of 13.

I'm starting to wonder if Orton might end up being a surprise cut. His camp has appear almost awful. The only thing saving him, is that I don't think the team would ever go into the year with Tanney as Romo's backup. That being said Tanney is certainly an intriguing development option. I'd love to see him as Romo's backup at some point, and potentially trading him for a high pick similar to what the Patriots did with Matt Cassel. If he shows too much in preseason, it'll be difficult though. Do we really want to keep 3 QBs? Is developing Tanny worth more than a 6th receiver? If its Rogers, I would say yes Tanney is worth more. If it is Armstrong, I would say he isn't. I like Rogers more than Armstrong, but Armstrong gives us a dimension we are lacking.

The Cowboys are loaded at the skill positions.

The offensive line (yet again) will determine how successful they will be.

I have a lot of confidence in Smith. Some in Free and Frederick. The others need to show us all something.

I didn't mention playcalling because if Garrett had a better oline to work with the last two seasons the offense would have put up better numbers regardless of the playcalling.

I think if the NFL had a 7 on 7 competition the Cowboys would win easily.

Our skill position depth has to be Top 3 in the league. As for our line, I think Leary will set the left side for quite some time. Smith-Leary-Fred should create some great holes for our RBs. As for the right, I'm obviously interested in the battle for RG and am hopeful Arkin has turned the corner. Along with the beef on the left, I like the prospect of Arkin pulling, further giving our RBs room to work. Free will need to be replaced in the next couple of seasons, but he should be serviceable until then.

The NFL caught up to our offense after 2007.....they keep Romo in the pocket and bring all kinds of pressure right up the middle into his face.........exactly where JJ left the weakest part of our Oline since then also....... We need the interior OLine shored up to make teams have to forgoe inside blitz paks ala Skins playoff game. Garrett hasn't shown the desire to move the pocket as Gibbs did with a Joe Thiseman, ..........maybe its in play this year.

They had plenty of talent in the passing game last season. They must be better in the running game in order to win more games this season. A better running game will also result in better pass protection.

I think most of our success will be predicated on if we STICK with the 12 personnel and running game, its easy to say in august were gonna run the ball more and use our tight ends but staying with it week end and week out with be another thing.

I really hope they bring in a vet guard. Livings/Berny are just going to hold the team back.

I wouldn't put livings in the same grouping as berny.

And I think he's gonna show why he received that free agent contract now that he's finally on the field again.

No argument about the running game, but there was a significant drop off in the passing game last year due to the loss of Robinson.

2011 Passer Rating
everyone else: 93.9
Robinson: 131.1

2012 Passer Rating
everyone else: 95.5
Ogletree//Harris/Beasley: 68.2

I don't think the key to the 12 personnel is so much whether we have a good running game.

I think the real key is being able to pass against base defenses. If we can pass well enough against the base defense with the mismatches from our TEs vs. LBs then we can force them to play nickel where we can be more balanced with our running attack.

I really hope they bring in a vet guard. Livings/Berny are just going to hold the team back.

I think the chances of that happening are between slim & none.

Leary is going to be given every opportunity to win the LG spot.

The right guard spot is going to be between:

Bern
Arkin
Costa
Kolwalski
Frederick-If they want Costa at center

I can't see them bringing in a veteran, starting quality guard.

Romo is going to be bounced around like a crash test dummy. Bad times. They added cook last minute last year, I can live in hope.

Maybe, maybe not.

I can't conceive of Free and Tryon being as bad as they were last year.

Frederick will be an upgrade over Cook.

Can Leary be as good as Livings?

Can Bern or Arkin be better than what Bern was last year– yeah I think so.

I don't see the Cowboys having as bad a pass protection as last year.

It would be hard for them to get worse. Just recently rewatched the Browns game from last year, just anout as ugly as you can get. Protection was a mess. I'm not sure if Free will bounce back, it seems like a confidence/ability thing with him. But I think the left side will be ok, they can get by with that, right?

I agree. I think taking some pressure off of Romo will do wonders. Asking him to carry the team every week doesn't work. Like all player he has his ups and downs so you need to be able to help him out when things aren't going well.

Certainly no guarantee that Free will bounce back... But the "camp talk" about Free this training camp is far more positive than last training camp.

I think we'll have a blocking replacement for M. Bennett this year too or a different plan. He might have been the best run blockers on the whole line in 011. Didn't need pulling guards with him in the game.
