This offense has always had potential, but it never seemed to be able to really execute since 2007. I think we are poised to have a tremendous year on offense.
I can't recall Romo ever having this many weapons at his disposal.
1. Dez Bryant
2. Miles Austin
3. Jason Witten
4. Terrance Williams
5. Gavin Escobar
6. Cole Beasley
7. Dwayne Harris
Not to mention guys like Rosario/Smith and Hanna. I think our running backs might excel in the passing game as well this year just given how much space I think they'll be given.
I think the 12 formation is going to work really well for us this year. Possibly even better than it did for the Patriots, who never had the wide receivers we did.
Dez Bryant is seemingly jumping into the role of a NFL elite WR this year.
Miles Austin need only stay healthy and become more consistent. The amount of single coverage he should see, especially in the slot should be problematic for defenses.
Jason Witten is Jason Witten, but I'm looking very much forward to seeing him being used in the Red Zone more often. Never did understand why he wasn't used more before. In 07 when we were really productive he had 7 touchdowns, and in 2010 when Romo was actually hurt he ended up with 9 touchdowns.
Terrance Williams has the potential to take what Robinson did and take it to an entirely different level. I think Robinson's success was simply due to being a competent receiver who was able to work with Romo and have chemistry with him. He had no success for the Jaguars. You give Romo more weapons, and if those weapons keep working to get open, Romo will hit them.
Gavin Escobar is going to be great this year. Yeah, I said it. Reports that he runs smooth routes, and catches everything, is going to open things up for us. I expect him to be used just like New England used Hernandez. In that Y position. And he is going to create mismatches. His blocking is apparently much better than expected.
Cole Beasley, I would actually put higher than Harris. I think he is developing into a more well rounded wide receiver. I think he will become a great option in the slot if we part ways with Austin at some point. I think he will get some opportunities in the slot and with Austin on the outside this year as well. Still not completely sold on Harris, but I can't wait to see what he does against Miami.
The offensive line is slowly but surely coming along. I think we're about a year away from where we would like to be in regards to the line, but we're not out there signing expensive free agents. Free is actually looking like he could rebound, which is great. I can't wait to see Smith against someone not named Ware. I'm looking forward to Leary replacing Livings. Frederick I think will be a staple in the center for the next decade. The biggest concern is right guard. Hopefully Arkin could develop into that role, but if he can't obviously we need to draft a guard within the first three rounds next year. And probably a tackle the year after that to replace Free.
My VERY early (obviously) draft priorities next year look like this:
1. Defensive End
2. Guard
3. Defensive Tackle
Lastly DeMarco Murray looks like this could be his break out year, again like many others, he just needs to stay healthy. He is a force when he is in the game for us. Does anyone have our record in games that Murray has started in? Dunbar surprisingly is looking great as well, so much so that Randle might end up being the 3rd option back there. Though he might be able to find a role as the goal line and short distance back. Tanner seems to be the odd man out. There is no way I see us taking 4 halfbacks on the roster.
The competition at receiver is really tight. Do we carry 5 or 6, and who is the 6th man? We should see a pretty good camp battle over these spots. The odd man out really is that 5th receiver. Which I think is between Beasley and Harris. I think Rogers or Armstrong would simply just be lucky/happy to make the team.
I don't think we carry more than 4 tight ends, so the battle is very much between Smith and Rosario. I think Hanna might have cost himself the #2 tight end spot by being injured. I don't see Escobar looking back. Hanna will have to hope for a lot of 13.
I'm starting to wonder if Orton might end up being a surprise cut. His camp has appear almost awful. The only thing saving him, is that I don't think the team would ever go into the year with Tanney as Romo's backup. That being said Tanney is certainly an intriguing development option. I'd love to see him as Romo's backup at some point, and potentially trading him for a high pick similar to what the Patriots did with Matt Cassel. If he shows too much in preseason, it'll be difficult though. Do we really want to keep 3 QBs? Is developing Tanny worth more than a 6th receiver? If its Rogers, I would say yes Tanney is worth more. If it is Armstrong, I would say he isn't. I like Rogers more than Armstrong, but Armstrong gives us a dimension we are lacking.
