I had someone close to the Packers tell me something about a month ago and since you mentioned the Packers, I'll share it with you. There is something called the "Cleansing Syndrome." I had never heard of it before but it's what you do when you know something will fail before you take the next step. For instance, David Lee Roth. No one could replace Howard Stern so what they did is bring in someone who they thought was destined to fail to cleanse the audience before they bring in Stern's eventual replacement. I was told the higher ups in Green Bay not only think Favre should have retired but that Aaron Rodgers can't play. They also believe that at the moment they have the worst talent of any team in the league. That is one reason they traded Javon Walker. It's also why they brought in Mike McCarthy. I had a respected GM in the NFL tell me that McCarthy was the least qualified head coach to be hired in his 20+ years in the league. So the person I talked to said they are basically starting from scratch and McCarthy is just along for the ride. They didn't want to bring in a real coach and put him through the stress of failing over the next couple of years while the team restocks at virtually every position. Look at their roster. They need new players at every position, not counting Al Harris and some of the young guys they drafted this year. Don't be surprised if they trade Rodgers and start stockpiling first-day draft picks in the next three years. Now, obviously what this person told me could be way off base but I would consider him a very good source who doesn't have a reputation of making things up. In other words, the worst may be yet to come in Title Town, if that's even possible.
PS McCarthy recently told his coaches and staff that he wants them to leave by 1:00 on Fridays so they can go home and spend time with their families. I'm sure that's a recipe for success. Actually, I believe Bill Parcells, Bill Belichick and Jimmy Johnson have done the same thing. There's no better way to build a winning team than letting your staff go home early on Fridays during the season so they can change their kid's diapers. What a joke.
