The Play That Sold Me On Dak As The Cowboy's Future

I'd seen a lot from Dak in the preseason, and the first two games of this year.

But what sold me on his being the Cowboy's future was this play in the 2nd quarter of the Bears game.

He rolls out, and has a defender coming in on him immediately. With most quarterbacks in this league, this is a sack.

Instead, Dak moves away, creates just enough space to square his upper body and then at a full run deliver the ball up the field for the 1st down.

Theoretically, you could try to coach a guy to be able to do this. But the fact is, a guy either has it or he doesn't.

Dak has it. This team is gonna be in good hands once Romo hangs it up.

that was a nice play and he definitely has good pocket awareness and the tools to extend plays. Honestly, I was sold on him after watching him play in our first preseason game. And kind of had that same type feeling back in the day when watching Romo way early on in his career (before he was a starter) where you notice that it factor. You can't put your finger specifically on what "it" is but after watching football for so many years, you know it when you see it. As a Cowboys fan, Dak brings a great sense of relief to me and our future.

I'd say Romo is already teaching him. Great guy. Great QB.

If he has helped create a QB controversy by helping Dak it will be a cruel irony. I hate this for Romo but, it's good for the Cowboys.

It was a good play. I think with most qbs in that league its either the same outcome or just a throw away

To be sure, that was a great play to emphasize Dak's abilitiy to extract good things from plays that seem likely to go awry. There have actually been no small number of those to pick and choose from, though. He really appears to have a knack for doing such things on a regular basis. I think many of us were sold on Dak the first time we saw him take the field as a Cowboy. You can count me in as one of them. That was a happy day. ;)

He has a great feel for the game as well as the physical tools to make plays. Throw in the leadership ability and his work ethic-- and what's not to like about this kid? I still believe a healthy Romo gives us the best chance to go deep in the playoffs this season-- but it is fantastic knowing that Dak has a great foundation to build on and very well could be the QB of the future for the next 10 years.

The fact we got him for a late 4th round draft pick is highway robbery-- and I will enjoy drinking the tears of Giants, Eagles, and Skins fans for the next decade :)

With Tyron out, I can see more designed plays like that. Move the pocket to the right, or roll outs to the right.
But then hit them with a counter play, and do a reverse to the left. roll the pocket right, reverse to Dunbar or Zeke back to the left.

It keeps Sf on edge as to run or pass, go to right or come back tot he left.

I remember years ago. The Commanders were playing the giants, a very good Giants team. They ran every play up the middle or to the right. Mostly to the right.
Madden even said, he thinks they are setting up something to the left. And sure enough, they start right, come back left, and get a huge long TD.
NY was on edge the rest of the game. And ended up losing. I think this was one of the years after they won a SB, maybe it was 1991.

He is playing great.

But make no mistake, he's had better pass protection than any rookie QB in NFL history so far.

He got sacked 4 times (3 really) in the Commanders game.

Wentz has had better protection imo.

And zero times in both of the others, if I recall. He has mostly had all day to throw.

I think this was his best play so far. I think that there are a decent number of QBs in the league who can pull this off, but this is an example of the utility a mobile QB who can throw on the run can bring. I still need to see much better throws overall to receivers who aren't wide open before I can even be sure he'll be in the league in a few years, much less be our long-term answer.
