This defense is well.....SLOW. Outside of Newman and Ware, this is a pretty darn slow defense from top to bottom.

Roy and Watkins are pretty fast. For a physical CB, which you really need 1 to start to have a good defense in the NFL IMHO, Henry has decent speed. For the JACK backer spot, Ayodele has good speed. We are much faster on defense than the Patriots. Problem is that Vrabel and McGinest were great and we have Ware and ??? Also Bruschi is terrific in coverage, Bradie is pretty poor. Oh yeah, they can disguise blitzes and actually stunt once in awhile.

Sure does show when teams spread out our defense, doesn't it? But hey, if you have all speed you get gashed like the Colts do every week.

How about some of each? We need to start picking players who have shown both power AND speed in their play in college. They don't have to be the size of dinosaurs, just a little bigger than we had, but a lot faster-and quicker, than we have now.

Watkins is not a burner, he's got average speed for a safety at best...he's got a great vertical though. Roy is not fast by any means IMO.......decent speed again, probably a little below average for a saftey IMO. Yes, Henry is the physical guy, but outside of Newman there are no burners int he secondary. The LB's outside of Ware aren't what I'd call sideline to sideline guys.

You check Watkin's speed at the combine. Sub 4.5. That's may not be "burner" speed but it's very good for a safety.

I agree on your assessment of Roy's speed.

I'm not a scout, just a fan, but I watched Watkins play for 4 years at FSU.....He's not a burner, I saw a few ACC WR's go by him....Don't get me wrong, he made some plays but I'm talking football breakdown spead over 10 yards which is tough for a long strider like Pat...hey bottom line is he's not a playmaker yet...just a rook though

In Henry's defense, he was being chased down by Stallsworth who is known for his speed.

No matter what scheme you run, it all starts in the trenches. Unlike San Diego's DEs and NTs, Dallas' DEs and NT are inferior.

If that had been Newman, theres no way he gets caught from behind by almost any WR in the NFL.

Donte Stallworth ran a 4.2 in college and his workouts pre draft. Newman might have gotten it farther but Stallworth would run him down.

Outside of Newman our defense is slow. The 3-4 defense relies on speedy LBs and we don't have them. Newman is the only one that knows how to use his speed. Watkins may be quick but his terrible pursuit angles and bad decisions negate his speed. Roy is practically a linebacker playing safety, and Henry looks like he runs a 5.5 forty after that pick he got today.

We simply don't have the personnel to run the defense we do.

Our LBs are too slow and Henry looks like he is trying to run in quicksand he doesnt have the quickness or speed to play press coverage.

Considering Newman in college was the Big 12 100 meter sprint champ I think we can probably say Newman is in the same speed catagory as Stallworth was in college.

Didn't Carp run a 4.6something with a messed up ankle? That's pretty fast for a LB, isn't it?
