The "Right Kind of Guy" (quotes from Bill Belichick)

Given the Saban/Garrett relationship and the Belichick/Saban relationship, the below quote from Belichick is in my eyes the best summary to date as far as what Garrett and the Cowboys are trying to accomplish.

“It comes down a couple things. No. 1, of course, is talent. But really, everybody in the National Football League has talent. If they didn’t have talent, they wouldn’t be in the league. It comes in varying degrees, we understand that, and whatever you get with the player, you get with the player. You get his strength, his speed, his explosiveness, his intelligence, his work ethic, whatever physical condition he is and so forth. I don’t want to say it’s even but it’s pretty comparable in the big picture, from team to team, based on the way our system is set up with free agency, salary cap, and draft order.

“The big thing I’d say we look for, which would try to differentiate the players for us, are players with passion; guys that really love football. As we all know from our jobs, if you love what you’re doing you don’t feel like you’re working. If you don’t like what you’re doing, then every step of the way is just painful torture. We don’t want people who are in football because of the lifestyle it brings or the opportunities [or rewards] from it. We want people who are in our business because they love doing it.

“Let’s face it; we all got into what we’re doing because we love doing it. When we took our first coaching job, or our first intern job or whatever it was, there wasn’t very much in it. We did it because we love doing it. That’s what we’re really looking for in football players – guys that love what they do, have passion for practice."

Dare we say that the team, under its current HC has a player acquisition strategy?

Just because he doesn't spoon feed the media with answers, doesn't mean a strategy doesn't exist.

One may chose not to agree with the strategy, but to say this team doesn't have one is a bit misleading by the media.

I have to agree 100%, I can't speak to the rest of Garrett's abilities but he clearly has a vision of how he wants to build this team and that is why I continue to support him. If it takes a few years to get himself from under the mess Jerry has created I say give him the time but I don't think he'll get it but hopefully he builds this team well enough to win one for himself or whoever Jerry replaces him with.

sounds like he is saying that success is down to the coaches and org since the players are all the same. Puts the Cowboys in the proper perspective IMO.

The key question is, who is making the decision on who we draft? Judging by the video snippets from the draft room, not JG.

No doubt whatsoever that they have a player acquisition strategy.

It's mind-numbing how clueless some of the mediots are.

I have many issues with Garrett, but his vision on how he wants the team and organzation to look, practice, and play is not one of them.

Other than the mystery behind the first round trade down, the rest of the entire draft was about as pure as you could ever get. They flat out went by the board they came up with over the last several months.

It does not mean we have to agree with the actual picks, but there's no denying that was BPA based on a Cowboy-specific board. Extremely clean drafting.

From what we've seen so far, i agree.

I don't think having a vision of how he wants things to be is his problem. His problem is executing that vision.

Can't really think of any players that have come on since Garrett has been head coach that I've seen give up on the team.

Since he took over as head coach, he's preached discipline, smart play, execution, etc..

Things we have yet to see on a consistent basis from his teams.

I don't think they're clueless. I think they're leading gullible readers around by a golden ring in their collective noses.

Stuff like this is nothing more than an invitation to pile on the organization and the head coach again, but, yeah, it's pretty obvious that they have a very specific strategy for player acquisition, and that they do a good job with it.
