The real reason McCarthy was hired has nothing to do with his barn or analytics

I think that's exactly what Jerry was thinking.

Unfortunately, it looks like McCarthy's reputation as a QB guru was complete BS

McCarthy’s go to is how he does his footwork with QBs and worked with Gannon in KC, Favre, Rodgers, Montana, Bulger, etc. The TV special talked about his drill that Montana did.

It’s easy to see that the Jones would get caught up in that aspect and think he can turn Dak into Aaron Rodgers which they think fixes all their other problems.
Maybe he should’ve hired him as a QB coach then lol......

The reason he was hired:

1- has won a SB
3-well known coach
3- Media loves him
4- he is a Yes man
You nailed it on the head. I’d also add desperate to the list as well. Exactly how I feel. The real coach we should’ve hired should’ve been a new fresher name.

It’s not talked about enough, but I really think the reason he was hired has nothing to do with his barn workshop or 30 min TV special about analytics.

It was 100% about he has developed Montana, Rodgers and others. The Jones’ wanted someone that would take care of their Dak investment. Basically they hired the most expensive QB coach there is.

Playcalling and team management were secondary on the list of reasons. So when Dak goes down, what’s McCarthys purpose? Develop Nooch?

It went stale in GB because Rodgers was developed to the point he no longer needed McCarthy. McCarthy is not a great HC. He’s a great specialist who needs other good specialists around him like Dom Capers to win big games.

MM worked with Montana at the end of his career in KC. He did not "develop" Joe Montana. lol

Urrrrrrban Meyer should have been the only interview...

he should still be interviewed...

NO WAY Urban wants the job here with Jerry. His team...is HIS team and his alone. I also think he likes teaching youngsters. And he knows he has to be careful with the high pressure jobs or the migraines will start up again.

I frikken can’t stand OSU but UM may have been a better hire but he’s probably smart enough to know that coaching under Jerry unless you have a Hershel Walker can’t miss trade in the making is no win situation

You may be right about that. But what I don’t understand is why they didn’t look seriously at anyone else. Other than the Rooney Rule interview they had by phone with Marvin Lewis, they did no other interviews besides McCarthy. I’m just curious why. Most organizations usually interview more candidates. Obviously this isn’t like most organizations.
Great question.

McCarthy checked all the boxes.

He wanted to keep Dak. Was good with keeping Moore while bringing in the rest of his coaches. Had the Super Bowl experience. Didn’t need to be face of the Cowboys or have final say in personnel.

If this was the case why were we so intent on retaining Moore and Garrett’s offense ?

McCarthy was basically looking in from the outside offensively which seemed odd for HC/OC. He even said he’d have to become familiar with our offense and play calling.

For a HC who’s offensive expertise was an attraction or selling point didn’t this seem odd to anyone else?

Did anyone really think he was hired from a 10 minute segment over his 9 playoff appearances and super bowl ring?

As far as development of Dak we could argue he was already being developed . In 4 years we had seen progress. Much like we saw a raw product develop years ago under center with same coaching.

And under a former QB coach who had a history of developing another QB who wasn’t a high draft pick. And possibly why he was hired to develop another young QB. Who appears to be developing as well.

What did he develop in Joe Montana a retirement plan? He only worked with Montana in KC the final years of his career. He passed on Rodgers for Smith in SF. If he had so much influence on Rodgers why was Rodgers the leader in getting him out of GB?

Just for the record, Big Mac’s career as an NFL coach started in 1993 as an assistant under Marty Schottenheimer at KC. That was when he came in contact with Joe Montana, who by then had already been in the league 12 years. You could certainly say MM helped develop Aaron Rodgers, but not Joe Montana.
