Let's face the facts folks. Our defense has been a middle of the road to lower half defense for a solid four years. Within those last four years, name any player to me who has recently gone chasing free agent money that has made a real difference. Please name one.

It's time that we all face the real fact that our defense is slowly getting blown up. The front office isn't taking a deliberate proactive route. Rather, they are looking to see who REALLY wants to be part of the reimagining. If they chase the money to lesser teams, BYE. If they're interested in being part of a great revamping effort, they will receive what we feel they deserve. PERIOD! I know you have all noticed a more shrewd approach to deals by our front office. It is truly a beautiful thing to behold.

Let's use Atlanta as an example. They used two drafts to completely revamp their defense. Now look at what they have out there. Young, fast, hungry players that have really gelled and grown together. I happen to love that management strategy and I believe our front office has taken notice. Most of our offensive players will be in their primed for the next few years so now is the perfect time to revamp. What's the worst that could happen this upcoming year? Perhaps the defense is still middle of the road after all of that work? No loss there... But just imagine if we improve the overall speed, strength, and hunger on the defensive side of the ball while also creating valuable depth with guys like Hitchens. Just imagine that for a moment.....

Tapper, JSmith, Maliek, DIrving... All will step up this year. So let's not forget to add them to the mix.

Faith is a powerful word and it's something we are all going to have to grab onto as these dog days of free agency continue. I have a strong feeling that the draft is going to be a doozy. There's so much talent at every position in this year's draft. Heck.. we pulled an Anthony Brown out of last year's draft in the 6th round.

My only two real worries right now are finding a suitable replacement for Jason Witten who is probably entering his last year AND someone like an Adrian Peterson in FA because of Zeke's youthful tendencies. Outside of those two things, I am super excited to see what we place onto the field on the defensive side of the ball this year! It promises to be different and, more often than not, different is good.

I'm not optimistic at all about the defense this year but I realize it's still a work in progress. I am perfectly fine letting go of the guys that have gone and look forward to seeing a defense heavy draft. If they keep drafting well they should add some valuable pieces to the defense. I just don't think the results will show up this year. I am very excited to see them rebuild the defense and I think McClay will do a great job.

There are a lot of reasons to be optimistic about the Cowboys defense this year.

Overall they performed well last year and will get a big increase of talented players this year.

More FA's, defensive heavy draft, Tapper, Smith......a lot of reasons to be optimistic.

I think the Defense is going to look totally different following the draft.

I think for the first time in forever we are going to use a premium pick on a SS and the new SS combined with Byron Jones is going to give us the best set of safeties we have had in a long time.

I think we are going to end up with a premium pick used on a CB. I think it will result in a major upgrade over Carr. I do wish however we re-signed Claiborne.

I think we will add one more edge rusher.

If Jaylon Smith can play and the rookies work out and some of the DE's start to show their worth we could dramatically improve the defense very quickly.

We weren't optimistic about the defense last year and they played beyond most of our expectations.
Then when we arrived at the play offs we were jumped the first quarter but we fight back but fall short.
We have lost some players that people were exhorting to get rid of this very off season, we did.
We lost three important pieces in my opinion but the Peae [sp] signing looks fairly capable.
I expect we'll play above our heads again that's been the traits of a Marinelli squad.

Been waiting for this for a while.

My only problem is what other bums are out there that have played for Marinelli that we are going to sign.

Uhh?....Atlanta let up 25 points per game and over 370 yards per game last year...their defense was bad and not the reason they made the super bowl at all.

The Front Office still has five more months of the offseason before we should make pronouncements about how active they are. We have had a mediocre defense for years but we have one of the best offenses in the NFL. And on March 14th last year our offense looked pretty bad.

We still have a ton of cap room and the team has drafted well for the last four years - including adding two Pro Bowl players in last year's draft along with solid players like Collins and Brown.

The biggest factor for our defense is the health of Jaylon Smith, DLaw and Tyrone Crawford, which fans don't have any insight into good or bad.

Also the biggest improvement year over year comes from first and second year players that develop - we have a bunch of defensive candidates for that kind of jump in performance in Irving, Collins, Smith, Brown, Frazier, Nzeocha, etc.

Our defense may or may not improve in 2017 but its way to early to know.

Hope your right. Hope we use every draft pick on the defensive side of the ball.

I hope we're able to rebuild the defense within the next few years. Dak and Zeke are extremely young and our core O-line is signed until at least 2024. That alone should keep us competitive for quite some time.

I think people are forgetting what our O-line went through. We had a solid but not great O-line with a lot of veterans like Flozell, Colombo, Gurode, Big Davis and Kosier. Guys got old and/or too expensive and we started to rebuild. But for a few years during that rebuilding period, our O-line was pathetic, probably the worst in the league. I don't want to remind me who was on that line. Then one year we drafted Smith, then we drafted Frederick and started looking like a solid unit, and finally we drafted Martin and started looking like a dominant unit. All I'm saying is, these things can take time and the transition could be rough. Take the secondary for example. I actually thought it looked quite decent this past year with solid production from veterans Claiborne, Carr, Scandrick and Church. But it wasn't anything special. Sure, we're very light in the secondary right now and it looks like it could be a rough year, but the upside is, what if we end up cutting ties with all our mediocre veterans and adding a few more young talents that produce an elite secondary? Or what if some young guys like Tapper, Irving, Collins (Gregory?) emerge on the D-line and give us a solid unit for years to come? I'm not highly optimistic about the defense, but I do remember the awful transitional years we had to endure on the O-line before having the dominant force you see today.

They haven't signed one upgrade in FA. Paea is a wash for McClain. Carroll is a step down from Carr and Claiborne.

Smith is an unknown at his point health wise. Tapper, whom I like, is still a 4th round pick.

And not only do they need a defensive draft, they need to hit on at least 3-4 of their picks.

Impossible? No. But probable? Likely not.

This is less about Atlanta. I just used their strategy as an example... It's more about us. Their defense is not "terrible". It's a work in progress that helped them get to a Super Bowl. Much further than us.
I mean I guess if you mean that you want to invest and build through the draft, then yea. But their defense isn't any further along than ours, nor is it a reason why they went to the Super Bowl beyond what ours would have been.

Cowboys have young, fast and hungry players on their defense.

How many punts did that young, fast, hungry defense force vs New England in the 4th qtr and OT of the SB? They even had NE backed up in their goal line and still couldn't force a punt!!!

They gave up more points per game than our under appreciated defense. They gave up 30+ and lost to that sorry *** San Diego Chargers team and lost to them at their own crib...

Now they're supposed to be some measuring stick for us?

Please

Iur defense is fine! We need one stud to go along with a emerging Irving and the rest of the guys will fall in line!!!
