The stinkin' Jaguars and Cardinals.
That's all I've got. I can't remember a weekend of NFL so perfect as the results rolled in, gift-wrapped in Cowboy silver and blue. It was as if someone called ole Erod up from NFL Central Station and asked, "So what would you want if it was your birthday, which it isn't, but we'll pretend it is?" Hmmm, I think I'd like......
Utter domination by the Cowboys. Absolute incompetence by the Giants. Continued blasts of reality for RG0-and-3 and the overrated Commanders. All on the heels of a night of comeuppance in Philly, which now sits in the crosshairs of a trip to Denver.
That's enough to make any Sunday shine, but the DJ kept spinning the hits, as the Packers got shocked, the 49ers got spanked, the Falcons got Hartlined, the Texans got thumped, and the Steelers continued their hopeless freefall into the abyss.
Had the Seahawks and Saints lost, perhaps it would have been too eery. An investigation may have been launched, with me as the key suspect. I can't be sure.
Of course, the glory of it all was washed in the brilliance of what Dallas brought yesterday. A true performance of seasons old. The running game was dominant, the passing game was efficient, and the defense....wow, how fast and swarming was that defense? Huge hits from just about everybody, disciplined in assignment, not a glaring defensive mistake all day, not even from JJ Wilcox in his first NFL start.
The Rams are a pretty good team. That wasn't the same ding-dong team Demarco Murray put 253 yards on a couple of years ago. They could very well win eight or nine games. Dallas simply made them look that bad.
A week ago - after merely a one-point loss to a good team on the road - the Eeyore's showed up in full force. Understandable, given recent flops, but still, it was hardly time to panic. This is a very different team with a very different culture, and a totally revamped structure. Better offensive line, better pass rush, more turnovers our way. Simply more possibilities to win all over the field.
Pitfalls lie ahead, but not the catastrophic variety of recent times. I suspect yesterday will serve as the launching pad to a nice run. A two-game lead in the division SHOULD be in store for next weekend. The Cowboys should hammer the Chargers much like yesterday by 10+ points. And the Broncos won't strut in here all that confident the next week either.
Yes, it's a week-to-week proposition, but that was the most complete game of football we've seen around here since Troy and Emmitt were playing. Or so it sure seems that way.
The Cowboys are in the conversation, folks. Seriously in the conversation. They can play with anybody. That unpredictable mess we've watched too long is all but gone.
Bring it on.
