The Spencer Contract

Read what you wrote...then the Cowboys commit a million or so to a player that may never play again? Stupid is as stupid does.

Last year might have been a bad idea to resign him. I don't know if they knew the severity of his injury going into last season. If they did, then yes, it was a bad move. But in all fairness, at least they just franchised him and didn't give him an extended contract. If you want to argue bad moves, I might say locking up Sean Lee long-term was dumber than giving Spencer the franchise tag last season. As far as this year goes, I wouldn't call signing Spencer for this season a bad move. It's a low-risk move. No guaranteed money, only $1.25 million, possible $3.25 million in incentives, and we can cut him before the season and not pay anything. I don't know how that's a bad move. I'm not counting on Spencer to do much this year. Anything he could provide is a bonus, in my opinion. We still need to address DE big time.

Yeah, but why commit a million or so against the salary cap on a player that may or may not even contribute? I resd posters saying that this is a good signing but they doubt he will even contribute to the team. What kind of nonsense is that?

The obvious implication I'd the team thinks he'll play again. Or they'll have a clearer sense whether he's likely to play again before week one of the season.

That's good news, or neutral news, at worst. The signing gives us access to his rights, and, if healthy, he's shown he's capable of playing at a higher level than anybody else on our DL. No matter what the health issues are, there's no downside here.

No other teams would commit to this, but the Cowboys do? I would not allocate money to something that I am not sure of regardless. I would buy him a one way ticket to wherever he wanted to go!

Why did other teams turn him down if the downside is so good? Hell, even Danny Boy did not fall for that.

Teams do this every year. And no I'm not giving you any examples. That is something as far fetched as you believe. It's just the way business is done in the NFL. That is basically what we did with Weeden and Hanie.

The Broncos just gave Ware a long-term contract for $10 mil a year, but we're the idiots. Okay.

He didn't get any guaranteed money. They can cut him during/after training camp for a cost of Zero dollars.

Spencer might have gotten the same type of deal from another team, but probably preferred to just stay here for the same offer.

I think it's 50-50 that he plays, but it's a free look at this point.

Ok,,,I'm done with this Spencer thing. You guys slobber all over him if you want to. If you are satisfied with him making 10 plus mil last year for doing nothing, and not counting the year before? Cool...maybe he will be the savior on defense this year.

Its a free look don't know why anyone would complain about that........as to Spencer, he doesn't have to move so I'm sure that played into his decision

I don't know that that means.

It's a free look. There's nothing more to it than that until after game 1.

i don't think several posters understand this point. there is no guaranteed money . . . .

Will his contract even be a part of the top 51 or 53 or whatever the figure is?
If not- then he doesn't count against the cap at all I believe.

So why the fuss? Even if so- it is a very small cap hit.
I'm not drooling or slobbering over Spencer, but this is not something to let hair fall out over.

This the most crucial part right here. I'm also loving these incentive-based contracts lately.

Me too.

The message is if you play to a certain standard..

you get paid.

Play to a higher standard..

..you get paid more.

What about this way of doing business did Ware and Ratliff not understand.

Those two guys were so mercenarie it wasn't even funny.

Welcome back, Spencer.

At least we have one of our former #1 player back in the fold.

Now I wonder with Melton and Spencer signed..

does this change draft priorities somewhat?

Is drafting a DE or DT priority?

Are we back to BPA in the first round?

Opening OT and SS as possible choices, too?

This signing is probably more of a surprise to Cowboy fans than it is to the Cowboys themselves. This has been setting up for a while. And it hasn't stopped the Cowboys from interviewing many defensive line prospects.

It doesn't change anything IMO.

I think the Cowboys were going to follow BPA (within parameters) regardless of what was going on with Melton and Spencer.

I think offensive line is a possibility in round 1.

I don't think safety is. Not in the first round.

We don't know other teams turned him down. It might just have been they didn't want to offer more than Dallas did. Dallas is, by far, the best place for him to take a one year deal. He's there already, the coaches love him, Dallas gets lots of national games where he can spotlight his skills.

It's probably the case that nobody gave him a multiyear deal so he just stayed out.

Really? Spotlight his skills....seriously?
