The Spencer Contract

the Cowboys commit a million or so to a player that may never play again?
Yeah, but why commit a million or so against the salary cap on a player that may or may not even contribute?
No other teams would commit to this, but the Cowboys do?
You keep using that word. I do not think it means what you think it means.

The Cowboys have committed nothing to Spencer. The increased payroll that counts against the cap right now is well under a million, because he displaces someone from the top 51 who was counting $495,000 already.

According to a source, Spencer’s one-year deal contains no signing bonus but can be worth up to $3.5 million.

He has a base salary of $1.25 million and up to $750,000 in roster bonus money based on him being on the active roster in each game. Spencer has additional incentives totaling 1.5 million in sacks and playing time.
Sounds almost too good to be true.

The numbers reflect that his knee is obviously still an issue. If this is the very best deal he could have possibly gotten, shouldn't that raise some red flags?

I love the contract, but I really don't feel much better about the defense. I'm hoping the Cowboys don't think this affords them the ability to go best player available versus leaning towards defense early. That defensive line needs some young blood too, IMO.

I think 5stars is bitter that Spencer didn't play last year but got paid. I guess he wants Spencer to play for free, which I'm pretty sure isn't legal. And if I recall correctly, Tom Brady and Peyton Manning got paid in seasons they didn't play.

I think Spencer might be a candidate for the PUP list to start the season. That would give him an extra 6 weeks before the team would have to make a final decision to keep him or release him at that point.

I have very little confidence Spencer will ever return to what he was after micro fracture surgery, few athletes ever do.

If he's not ready by game 1, I would just cut him. He can be re-signed if he gets healthy. They have to pay his weekly salary (1/17 of the total) while he is on the PUP.

I like it, If Spencer can show he is back then great we get a solid player back in the lineup if not then Dallas can releases him and we move on without cost. I hope and think they will still look to the draft as the DE spot this move will not cause Dallas to avoid DE. Spencer will be 1 of 80 brought to camp and I do hope he can show he is back and can earn the incentives

I agree, I'm all for Spencer returning but if he can't make it to start the season then release him and if need be try to sign him once he is ready.

Sounds like a pretty fair deal all the way around.

For a player NO OTHER NFL TEAM WANTED?

This is a dollah-driven bidness. I would hope the minimum with a lucrative package of incentives.
His contract (even for one year) seems excessive for a likely has-been.
Had other teams clamored for him I thot that maybe he had something to show. Apparently not. He limp back to Dallas and Jerra gets all generous and stuff.

Similar to others' thoughts, I'd be pleasantly surprised if he suits up for 8 games and gives us 5 productive outings.

If he can meet the incentives then it is worth it too Dallas if not we lose nothing. This adds up to 1 out of 80 going to camp the contract ensures him nothing. As one reporter put it this was a smart move by Jones and the Cowboys.

IIRC, the deal with the micro fracture surgery is that it provides an opportunity to get back to playing at a high level, or can be career ending, right? Ie, it's a procedure with very little middle ground. Now, there's plenty of reason to be concerned whether Anthony Spencer ever makes it back to playing football again. And then, he's still changing schemes and will have had a full year off and a truncated training camp to get prepared. I'm not expecting him to make it back, frankly, but, if he does come back and he does earn a spot on the roster, I'd expect him to play at a relatively high level once he's here.

I wouldn't PUP him, though. I'd try to get him back sometime in preseason to make my evaluation, and then cut him before we get to the final 53 if he's not 100% ready to give us quality snaps in week one.

It's not like he paid himself, either.

Prediction - He will start the year on the PUP list and he makes his season debut on Thanksgiving!

Interesting quote from Spence:

“I’m not really thinking about a day,” said Spencer, who signed a one-year deal with the Cowboys on Saturday. “I’m taking it day by day and hopefully I’ll be back for training camp. I know it’s not going to be the [organized team activities] but camp is what I’m shooting for.”

“It’s getting there,” Spencer said. “I’ve probably got another month or so. When I had the surgery, they said it was a six- to eight-month recovery. I’m in the five- to seven-month range now. I just need to continue to get it stronger and stronger.”

Yeah, like I complain a lot around here! lol smh

This is true.
I don't think anyone can claim you're a Moody Blue.

I guess that's why it shocked me a bit to see you spearheading the dislike for this maneuver when it means very little in a negative sense for the team.
