they just threw out 2 names that jumped from posistion coach to HC. and that was andy reid and ron merinelli(i know i misspelled his name).

they're talking bout phillips being a boring hire, and would be a step back for the team because of the age, rather then moving on with youth in garrett.

i look at it this way, if garrett bombs this yr, next yr cowher, lovie, and fisher will be free. but i think garrett can handle it.

made another good point being that phillips is 60 yrs old and only has been a Hc for 5 yrs? so the majority of his career teams didnt want him? and all of the sudden he's the answer for dallas? they dont think so

To me just the age issue is not a Valid point. This team is not in a rebuilding stage so it does not matter that much.Say he has no personality then I agree but age alone is not a big factor.

The thing is if you hit on a good young coach you could have decades of strong teams. With a legit chance to win it all yr in yr out. You get stability, think Pittsburgh and Cowher without losing free agents every year.

I think it was not talking so much about his age....as it was saying he has been hired but two times for HC positions in all of that time.

I definitely agree with ya LatinMind. Hiring Wade would be a step back, a boring hire, and a less trendy hire being that the league is getting younger at the HC position.

Plus, Garrett is a familiar face and was a part of a Cowboy's regime that had enormous success. He's more or less a homegrown kind of guy.

I would like to see Garrett take over as the HC and have some success.

the league has changed.....when he started out, u were an assistant for a long time and had to work your way up the ranks.....coaches lasted a lot longer and were given more time to succeed.

Nowadays....a coach is lucky to get 3 years to win or he is gone. Just think if Dallas would have been that way with Landry.....We never would have had 20 consecutive winning seasons, 5 SBs, 2 Rings....and all that stability.

So to me age means nothing. Marv Levy was old, old and coached the Bills to 4 consecutive SBs....Vermiel was old when he came back and took the Rams to the SB and won it....using the age card is lame.

What you have to do is go by how the players respond to the guy when he is a HC as opposed to a DC or OC. I know as a DC, players bust their but for guys like Phillips and Campo. However, as a HC these two coaches fell short. We know Campo had very little to work with here in Dallas and also had to deal with Cap Hell.....as for Phillips, I don't really know everything he had in Denver or Buffalo.

Phillips for DC would be great

You cannot hire a head coach with the thought- "if he's no good there are big names out there next year" You think we will be the only one's interested in Cowher? Jeff Fisher will most likely be signed to a long term deal. Lovie Smith is about to get signed to a long term deal. We need to hire a coach that we think is the long term answer!!

This sounds silly and it's probably not possible in today's NFL, but I want another Landry. I want a guy we can hitch the team to for years and years. I'm tired of changing coaches every 3 or 4 years. I want someone that's going to become the face of the franchise for a long long time.

Nothing wrong with that idea and I think it has a lot to do with the Jason hire. Nothing "silly" about your post...

Phillips will be brought here to install his defense and give Garrett time to prove that he is capable. How can't you not get that?

I really don't care about what the Ticket sees as "trendy" or "boring". I'd really hope we aren't hiring a young guy because the Steelers and especially the Raiders did, because there's at least a 50-50 chance they will be a flop. (No pressure, Tomlin. ;))

And I bet the Rams don't regret hiring that old fossil Vermeil, even if it was a "boring" hire.

We just need to get the guy who can do the best job and forget what the so-called perception is.

This is interesting to me.

We don't throw in young QBs before there ready because you don't want to ruin them before they have a chance to be developed but we follow this approach with a HC?

I don't buy it. I think Garrett is being considered for an OC position, not HC.

Garrett = inexperienced = easy for Jerry to manipulate

This is perhaps the biggest concern bringing in a young guy....although Campo wasn't young and still was dominated. Character (read backbone here) is going to be an important item for the new Cowboys head coach. Otherwise we will be back to "old" Jerry.

This quick hire of Garrett spells the end of any quality HC prospects coming to Dallas.

Who in their right mind would now come here with Jerry again hiring the coaching staff and key assitants without having named a HC first..?

Not to mention the leaked intention that Redball is the ordained heir apparent to a HC job down the road.

This stops any options of pursuing other young coaching prospects like Rivera as a HC or even looking at somebody experienced and qualified like Cowher next year, even if Jerry could afford him.

This is going to force Jerry Jones to now hire and promote from within for the HC position and defensive coordinator positions I feel.

Which means possibly Sparano as HC with Redball as the OC and probably promoting one of the remaining defensive assitant coaches to DC.

Or if they get lucky, hiring one of the good assistants from some team that runs a good 3-4 defense and give him a shot at making Dallas' defense perform. Wasn't Johnson from NE mentioned in the past as a possible DC..?

An old BP guy that might come here..?

I'm not exactly happy about these turn of events. But the fact that BP is sticking around and helping Jerry pick thru the candidates and hire them means that there is some plan in place and that BP has a continuing interest in how and who he leaves this team with after he's gone.

We'll see.

I think Jerry respects Jason as much as he did Parcells .....

Jerry has never wanted a young coach as much as he has Garrett ....

But again we haveno idea what the plan is ..... I think Rivera is on board with this and Rivera is gonna be the next Coach of the Dallas Cowboys.

Excellent observation! I'm right along with the others in agreeing with your point. Wade would be a blah hiring. Why not look at the possibility of making Garrett the HC and seeing what he can do for one year. It's nice to know that Cowher is going to be coming back. That could be a safety blanket should Garrett fall flat on his face. I seriously doubt he falls though.
