I have to admit that I'm a bit of a homer sometimes, just like most dedicated fans. I love me some Tony Romo and Jason Witten and D. Ware and hope that someday they win a ring. I defend these guys maybe a little to much...especially Romo, lol...but I never got to see Troy Aikman or Roger the Dodger or even Danny White. No, all I got was Quincy Carter, the Drew Henson experiment, Vinny T. and Drew Bledsoe so from my perspective Tony Romo has been pretty damn good.
It really is all about perspective and mine changed today. This team is what it is and will always be so as long as Jerry Jones is here. I know this opinion isn't new but I believe it becomes more evident every year and the reason is simple.
Jerry the Owner and Jerry the GM are the same man.
Jerry the Owner is happy. His team is as popular as ever, maybe even more so. He makes money hand over fist and it seems that no matter how bad his team is or how long it goes without winning anything significant his team's value always increases and it's popularity never declines. Oh, and when people think Dallas Cowboys they also think Jerry Jones.
There is no way this attitude doesn't carry over to Jerry the GM.
The GM position is a highly sought after job in the NFL. Many strive for the job and don't get it and if they do they know results are expected and quickly. Jerry the GM doesn't have to worry about that. He will never be fired or be in the hot seat no matter how bad things get. So instead of getting a head coach that might end up being the face of the franchise he continues to stick with retreads or projects that have seen their best years already or who had no business coaching a NFL team to begin with.
Jerry wants to make certain that when the Cowboys do have success you hear his name first and not that of whatever puppet he has brought into the fold.
In the end Jerry the GM and Jerry the Owner both are about the same things...
1) popularity
2) profits
3) Jerry the GM
4) winning
I've come to accept this truth. It's hard because I've never seen the Cowboys win anything significant. The playoff win against the Eagles was the highlight of my time as a fan. Still...I'll keep rooting and hoping that this team turns the corner despite of Jerry.
